I tried just about all of that in south Georgia. The deer didn't touch the rape but demolished the collards and purple top turnips. I didnt have any radishes in the mix. But I've got some plots I've planted in middle GA just lats week. Oats two varieties, winter wheat, triticale, with arrowleaf, regalgraze white, Barbaro red clovers forage chicory barkant turnip hybrid forage rape Daikin radish. Deer were in the plot that afternoon. And have been visiting everyday waiting. Went back yesterday and layered some more of the cereal grains and I already had germination of everything. Looks like it'll be a good year. Goodluck to everyone.

in GA I probably would not even bother with brassicas since you can have cereal grains and clover Palatable through the winter

Thanks for the information. I wasn't sure what the largest brassicas were in some of my mixes on the farm in WV. Now I'm certain from the video they were collards. When I'm doing mixes I'll make sure I have them in there.

Sugar beets are a waste of time. Beets require spring planting to reach maturity, but the most effective brassica planting in my area is mid to late August depending on moisture forecast. A Spring planted brassica stand in Michigan will be useless by hunting season.

I try to plant with soil health and year-round food supply. If we can achieve living roots in the soil and diverse forage and cover, that will be the best for the environment. I dont recommend to clients they use only "bait" plots for hunting but to establish a good supply of food, cover, security at all times. Brassicas are in my mixes but never a stand alone crop. Thats a waste of space in my opinion. They do quiet well in a spring mix but dont make forage alone. Fall is ok but they are usually decimated by hunting season or untouched,depending on what alternatives deer have. Clover is just a good in the same season as brassicas. I could go on and on.

@@ChilcoteForestryServices I'm in Southern Michigan, and my program is to have about half my plots in perennials (clover and alfalfa mainly) for warm season food, and then the other half I rotate with a late planted brassica mix and a forage grain mix (oats, rye, wheat). Once we get to October, the deer are typically done with the clover and alfalfa as it is past prime, but they smash the brassicas from October through the winter. The grain mix isn't as great in the Fall, but they paw at it all Winter as a source of sustenance, and it greens up really early in the Spring. In the summer I mow it when it gets about thigh high, and then till it in. It makes a great soil for brassicas. When the crops come down, a nice lush field of turnips and radishes is a magnet in this area. So I have food 365 days, but in this area we can't rely on perennials alone because once they get frosted they lose a lot of attraction.

If you were to mix clovers and winter wheat with collards and radishes, how many pds of each per acre and can you add winter peas
@ChilcoteForestryServices
@ChilcoteForestryServices 3 жыл бұрын
8lbs clover, 40 lbs wheat, 30 peas, 4-6 lbs brassica, depending on the browse pressure. They need spacr to get big. If deer are eating the wheat, they will do well, then wheat, clover and peas will come in spring

Chicory does better in a clover mix, that in a cover crop mix, we also use Okra and Cow peas as a screen cover! Also trying some Lambquarters and other natural Brouse where appropriate.
