Schluter Kerdiboard is extruded polystyrene foam panel, with a special reinforcement material on both sides and fleece webbing it comes in thicknesses of 3/16", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 1", 1-1/2", and 2" in this case I used ½” thick 4’x8’ panels. It is used in conjunction with Kerdi-Band and thinset to build waterproof shower enclosures and anywhere waterproof walls are desirable. In this video I detail the installation of the Kerdi-Board and show how to get a flat wall when the wall studs are not all in plain. I detail the how to install the Schluter foam curb and how to install the Keri-band in the corners and seams, how to apply the patches over the washer heads to achieve a waterproof shower enclosure. Schluter has a proprietary drain that is installed in conjunction with the waterproofing membrane. These drains can be installed with the shower floor trays when the shower is the appropriate size for the tray and the drain lines up with the position of the drain opening in the tray. Often times the trays can be made to fit the shower by cutting them to the correct size, however when this is done the perimeter of the shower floor will no longer be straight and level. To avoid this the shower floor pan can be installed with a bed of deck mud that can be shaped to any size and shape. In this video I demonstrate how to do this in a 36”x36” shower stall. Once the mud has set, the entire shower floor is waterproofed by installing kerdi membrane and tying it to the shower walls and Curb. Quick tip Sal, if your level is flat you can lie it down and get a two way level rather than turning it the 90° to get the level in the other direction. I have those pittsburgh levels and they can be laid down for the two way level check. A second saved, is a second earned lol

Hey Sal. I installed a Dreamline 30x60 pan, durarock walls. Will glue up QVEDecor 5mm composite wall panels after fixing low spots on walls-(will be messaging you now for advice cause been a pain in the ass). Wondering bout installing pebble tile on pan though Dreamline states will void warranty. Noticed slight crack on inside top of curb from dropping cement board down onto it awhile ago. Will need to epoxy it also thought of utilizing an underlayment material over it and rest of curb&pan pre tiling should I end I going this route. What might you recommend. Watch for message coming concerning major hassle trying level few low spots !/8-1/4” on my cement board walls. Already have done two skim coats with Customs readyset and finishset using 1/8” backer board in places but using 40g grinder and random orbital kicked up major silica dust storm and not overall pleased with surface still needing another 1/8” areas. Liked your video utilizing the set and Kerri to level wall pre tile. Instead of yet another coat of Finishset mortar what thinset do ya recommend at this point for final attempt before using Aqua Defense waterproofing. Then planned thin skim coat Featherset over it to ensure solid bonding surface for construction glue to adhere too using 5mm composite shower wall panels by QVEDECORS. Plan to use Locktite Ultimate and LiquidNails FixIt glue(tubes) supposedly to do donut circles between running the double sided tape vertically provided with panels. HELP!😢

Instead of shims for cement board or Durock - is it okay to thinset the studs to float out the wall-prep? I wasn’t sure if you could do this without furring strips

*Wet shimming* Only approved for certain situations with schluter board or foam board There are times where installers wet shim cement board, but it is not recommended or a part of manufacturer warranty. But it might make a difference between using modified and unmodified thinset behind the board on to the studs, which the board manufacturer will tell you. (A118.1 / .15 / .11) There are forums out there of UK installers using *fast set* to wet shim their cement board and screw it in the same day. 🤔

Hi Sal. What would you do with the outside corner if the tile didn't wrap around. Do you still use kerdi band for the corner. Can Kerdi membrane be coated with drywall mud and sanded to accept paint?

No need for the banding to wrap around, just go up to the edge.

@@SalDiBlasi But what do i do with the corner. Tile goes flush to the corner and other side will be painted. Schluter says you cannot apply kerdi membrane where joint compound is applied. So how does corner get treated in these cases? Thanks.

@@Losas.Company well corner needs corner bead and coated with mud. Because other side of the corner will be painted. Some says to keep the membrane back from the corner but the bottom corner always gets wet and most vulnerable spot so i want to bring the membrane all the way to the edge.

@@Faruk651 make sense. The kind of water that gets on a vetical plane like that is minimal. Remember your glass enclosure is in an inch or more deeper into the shower (depending on the door swing) it could be silicone or the glass sweep that stops water from leaving the shower. The other item is going with a high-end paint or semi gloss for those wet areas. We personally use greenboard, 20 min for tape, moisture green mesh tape, then skim with plus 3, then texture and a semi gloss paint. Adding the moisture tape I’ve noticed doesn’t hurt the mud. Usually we skim enough on a wall like that about 1/8”. Hope this helps.

Sal, question, can I install with this Schluter system on the wall big tiles (24x48)?? I was thinking the same for the floor, I was planning in installing 2 big tiles as well (2 pieces of 21x44) Let me know if works

Yes on the walls, just be sure your framing is as required. Use ditra on the floor, not Kerdi Board

When installing metal lath onto plywood, I use 1" truss head screws. It stiffens the plywood better than staples can. The dry pack integrates with the plywood. If you have enough depth and have any deflection concerns, you can lay in small diameter re-bar.

It is supposed to be an unbonded mud bed on plywood, you don't want it attached to the plywood.

@@SalDiBlasi Typically, yes. In this peculiar situation, we need the dry pack to be structural. It is working very well.
