What’s even more amazing is they sound exactly like this when they perform live too. Pentatonix are an a cappella group. They have a handful of songs (6 in 9 years) where their beatboxer also plays cello (he calls the skill cello-boxing), and they have performed with some orchestras for live events, but otherwise are fully a cappella. They are known for their intricate and unconventional arrangements, as well as their harmonies and just all around vocal prowess. They formed in 2011 to compete on the NBC a cappella show “The Sing-Off” which they proceeded to win. In the years since, they have become multi-platinum artists and have won 3 Grammies (Daft Punk in 2015, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy in 2016, and Jolene ft Dolly Parton in 2017). I believe they are the only a cappella group to achieve this type of mainstream success.

There were instruments in one of their Grammy award winners. That would be Jolene. But the instruments were just a guitar, keyboard, and bass guitar that Dolly brought in with her, and they stayed well in the background. They didn't need percussion as they had Kevin for that.

@JoSedunary
@JoSedunary 4 жыл бұрын
The premise of this video was that after they won The Sing Off, the record deal dropped them because they said that acapella would never sell in mainstream.....so they went back to putting out KZfaqs from their couch and posting them online. SO in the vid, they started on the couch...went off into the stratosphere but are still grounded enough to get back on the couch as good friends years down the track after all their successes.... The three on the couch at the end are 'The Trio' and met during high school (Kirstie and Mitch before). They needed more than 3 members to compete on the Sing Off so they found Kevin (Beatboxer and all round expert of everything) online and he helped them find their bassist (Avi - who was his room mate.) They have only changed their lineup once - Avi has been replaced by another bassist (Matt Sallee) who he helped to find when their touring schedule became a little too hectic and took him away from family too often for too long. They remain the best of friends and Avi has his own solo tracks out now which they all fully support. If I've missed anything I would guess that in the next millisecond at least 50 pentaholics will let me know ! Welcome to the PTX Family - and thank you for taking us on your journey 😊

You went in COMPLETELY BLIND here, NOBODY told you that Pentatonix is an Acapella group? OMG!!! Well, this song definitely has the shock value then! Kevin is just THAT GOOD of a Vocal Percussionist (beatboxer). He also plays Cello and he can beatbox while he is at it (he calls it CelloBoxing, which is apt). Kevin has his own channel, just look up KO. Kirstin has her own channel. Scott and Mitch share a separate channel, Superfruit. Avi Kaplan has his own channel and has split from the group (amicably, and with many tears all around; they are still friends). Pentatonix has a new Bass vocalist, Matt (but I have NO IDEA if he has a side channel or not, I have never heard of anything like it for him). THey are ALL AMAZING! I LOVED this reaction! I HAVE to subscribe, of course! :)

I'm sorry, but I get super annoyed when musical artists go political in their musical work. It completely turns me off to a given song or movie. I can give actors a small bit of leeway here because sometimes a film may be about something political, like say a movie about JFK or Nixon. But it's still a very fine line. And it's annoying that artists will use their notoriety to get a platform that the regular person would never have access to. They haven't earned that platform in the slightest.

I’m glad you found Pentatonix. Yes, they are the best-the gold standard of a cappella. Like you, like everyone, I like Bohemian Rhapsody. I think you will be even more impressed by their version of Hallelujah. It’s stunning. But since we both like Bohemian Rhapsody so much, I’m going to give you a guarantee. You need to listen to Bohemian Rhapsody by Angelina Jordan. She arranged and sang this classic in a way that no one has ever heard. The performance literally stuns the judges, the audience, and the other competitors. I, along with many others, believe she is the best female singer in the world right now. Her voice, her musicality, and her immersion into the lyrics of whatever she sings is addictive. Yes, I love Pentatonix, but Angelina’s version brings you into a different world.
@charlesbowen8522
@charlesbowen8522 4 жыл бұрын
johnvasi i agree about “Hallelujah”. I second the recommendation of Angelina Jordan. She’s very young- thirteen now, I think - but has vocal control, musical decision-making, stage presence, and adaptation to genre are very mature. I’ll add a recommended artist: Jacob Collier, another prodigy who wrote his first grammy for Best Arrangement (cover of the “Flintstones” TV show theme) while still in his teens. Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock found him on KZfaq and set him off on an amazing career. He’s a genre-bender like PTX and Angelina Jordan, but is usually classified in one form of jazz or another because of his intricate arrangements. Most of his ‘published’ tracks are as accessible as pop. He is another master of live performance. Finally, now that you’ve found a capella, a style that demands vocal mastery, I suggest you view something from Home Free, who won the Sing Off before PTX. They’re considered country, but can pull of any genre.

They have their own KZfaq channel with nearly 19 MILLION subscribers and over 5.5 BILLION views of their videos. If you did a cover once a week, it would take you nearly 4 years to do them all. It is always done Acapella...and they never do a cover that that can't sing live since they perform at their concerts. They have won 3 Grammys; performed in 4 world tours (always sellouts); appeared on TV a multitude of times (interviews and guest appearances). I absolutely *love* this reaction. At first, she's questioning whether they're "doing all the instrumentals through their voice" and if that's true, it's "incredible." At this point, all of us Pentaholics are saying "yup, that's how it is, they're incredible." Then, when she actually sees Kevin beatboxing, her jaw drops as she realizes what she's gotten herself into. She mentions she's a musician near the end of her reaction, so I'd assume she knew the term "A Cappella" but we fellow Pentaholics know full well that they are capable of making us tongue-tied and at a complete loss for words.

PTX(Pentatonix) are a group of five (5) friends. They're an a capella ensemble. A capella means that is absolutely no instrumentation on their tracks.

Instrumentals: All voice, except for things like foot stomping, beatboxing (I'm not quite sure how to beatbox, but it requires no separate instruments), clapping, snapping fingers, etc. So, all voice plus their own bodies. When Mitch does the guitar solo, please note that the megaphone isn't actually being used; it's just a prop. That incredible guitar solo is entirely Mitch's voice. And any bass guitar you hear is either Avi or Scott. On the rare occasions when they actually use musical instruments, you'll see them (or their collaborators) playing the instruments.

Your silent “what?” was everything. Great reaction and subscribing. You’re gonna get bombarded with Pentatonix requests so I’m gonna put an early bid for La La Latch and Attention; and for more Kirsten: Sound of Silence (her verse is incredible), Shallow, Say Something, and Rather Be.

Yes, it's all their voices. They are an Acapela group. Check out them singing Hallelujia, and The Sounds of Silence. Both are amazing. Also, they do a song called Radioactive with Lindsey Sterling. She plays the violin and the Beatbox guy here plays the cello. That is great too.

This is one of my favorite reactions to being introduced to Pentatonix. She didn't even know they were an a cappella group before they started. In fact, she didn't mention the words "a cappella" at all during this reaction, even though she did mention she was a fellow musician. Watching her come to terms with what they are really doing is such a treat. However, I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt that she knew what "a cappella" was but due to the massive brain fart that regularly happens when watching Pentatonix for the first time, she probably just couldn't access that part of her vocabulary until later. That is absolutely a part of their power. They blow people away and make them babble for a few minutes. Mission accomplished, Pentatonix.

So glad you discovered Pentatonix! I've been watching several other youtubers reactions to they're version of Bohemian Rhapsody. You've earned my following! There is so much more PTX songs that would blow your mind. I'll have to see what else you've reacted to before I make a request. But this was great! Thank you SJ!

They are so phenomenal. You went in as a Pentavirgin and came out a Pentaholic. A couple of suggested videos would be Hallelujah, Daft Punk Medley, Amazing Grace. There are no bad choices, but I recommend these because it showcases their stellar abilities in different ways. Kevin, the beatbox master sings lead in part of Amazing Grace and will blow you away with beautiful tenor. Hallelujah is phenomenal because they are so unselfish in sharing lead and supporting the current lead with unmatched backup vocals. Daft Punk Medley…you just MUST see it. No spoilers. (Their first Grammy and you will understand why)

Mitch and Kristie met when they were around 8, did all sorts of music, All three (M,K and Scott) went to high school together, did all kinds of music. Put out youtubes as The Trio. Scott decided to do The Singoff, managed to add AVI and Kevin (the day before) won the damn thing. No wonder they sing so well together and they already had experience doing youtubes so when their record contract fell through they just got serious. Awesome, isn't it. Note that Scott's range is big enough that he takes over the bass line when Avi or Matt does a solo. Also note that the megaphone is a visual prop which he doesn't use live. Try Daft Punk (first Grammy) and watch the acceptance speech...

If you haven't done it yet, you should check out their version of Daft Punk....its a cool video. They also do a full performance called "Wizard of Ahhs", based on the original story of "OZ", where they play the main characters and sing & dance their way through that magical land.....just a couple of their many notable performances. Enjoy!!!

I agree. Pentatonix is the world’s best a capella vocal group. But my favorite crossover vocal harmony group in the world is called Forestella. React to their “ Bohemian Rhapsody”. And you’ll know why. After performing this they became famous worldwide One other female vocalist who is my favorite in all the whole wide world. Her name Diana Ankudinova. Diana Ankudinova possesses the most unique mesmerizing recognizable memorable amazing atavistic tribunal primordial shaman goddess voice in the world -any age. At age 14 her incredible and legendary performance of an old ritual wedding folk song titled “ rechenka” ( River in English) Is -to this day-considered by many professional vocalists and coaches as the most unique and mesmerizing live performance by a vocalist -any age , in the history of Russian talent shows. And along with “ Human” ( low notes to die for.. she’s a rare mezzo contralto ) and “ Wicked Game” contributed to her winning not only the kids contest for 2 consecutive years but catapulted her to international stardom. with millions of avid followers worldwide. And you might want to read a little about her tragic younger years as an orphan abandoned and tossed into a garbage can unable speak for years after she was up for adoption by her birth mother at age 3. You may want to continue your Ankudinova journey by reacting the year prior to “ rechenka” when she was 13! She entered her first kids contest in Russia where she sang a song that required masterful yodeling. It was a masterpiece, a tour de force, some say the best yodeling performance in the history of videos showcasing yodeling, but in this performance it wasn’t just her amazing yodeling but also her body movement and stage presence and incredible as this might sound ( and I’ll shortly explain the reason why) but NOT ONE CHAIR TURNED!!!! After the song was finished and the judges turned around , the audience interrupted what they were saying by giving Diana a 5 minute STANDING OVATION. After the applause, the judges had her perform a segment of a French song made famous by Edith Pief and after she sang it , the lady judge covered her face with both hands in utter shock , disbelief and SHAME. The judges said they didn’t press their buttons because they couldn’t teach her anything. She was beyond their level already. But this turned out to be a BLATANT LIE and one of the worse scandals in Russian talent contest history. Because the following day it was revealed that the contest was “ fixed” the winner was “bought” before the show started. A total travesty of justice. And the following days over 80 million who watched the contest when posted on KZfaq spit on the judges. But she got her revenge the following year and year thereafter by winning not only the Russian contests in two consecutive years but 60 more awards and contests. Please ( when you get the chance) I BEG of you to at least privately react by YouTubing “ Diana Ankudinova yodeling”. And you’ll witness a yodeling masterpiece and if you stay to near the end of the judges commentary ( making excuses and lying) you will hear a brief portion of the French song the judges asked her to sing that she NAILED! And there is a video of her outside a mall at age 11 singing this same French song but the complete version and she KILLED IT!!!! And at age 13 a classic flamenco song called “ me toy” hi how she performed with amazing emotional impact. And when you’re convinced that she’s one of the best female vocalist in the world ( like millions of others including myself) you may want to react to a couple of her newer songs: ( she just turned 17 the other day) like “by your voice”. and a masterpiece titled “Tomorrow is a lie” ( 4.26 one posted by HTB with famed composer Igor at the piano). I promise you if you continue to publicly react to Diana ( “Rechenka,” “Human” , “Wicked Game”, “Yodeling”...your subscriber base will go through the roof!!!! She’s now almost as popular as the great male pop-op vocalist Dimash. And has her own Facebook fan club. And if Diana and Dimash were ever to perform together in concert one day I can assure you when the upcoming concert is announced, it will be SOLD OUT in less than an hour. And if I could, I would mortgage my house my kids ( just kiddin) my everything to watch them perform together in concert. I have the perfect tag line : The DI [ana] & Di [mash] Extravaganza! DI 2 Squared !!! All love in isolation from Miami Beach, Florida, Al
