"Ope" was a foundation argument of my Master's of "Wisconsin Wordology" thesis and I traced its earliest usage back to the Beer Purity Law of 1516 that states beer can only be made from "Water, Barley and Hops, ȍpe 'en Yeast. It's a valid Scrabble word so play it wisely.

Sadly as a south Floridian, I was ignorant of the midwestern slang of the “OPE” that was being thrown around… Funny…come to find out that I have ALREADY been just “OPE-ING” my way through life unbeknownst to me since childhood. Thanking my Mom and Dad, their exquisite impeccable manners, and down to earth friendliness, that I am already ahead of the curve here! Thank you for the OPE tutorial. I am German and just realized that we say it too, at least some people. It’s kind of an emphasized „ohh“ you use when something goes wrong and you want to express both awareness of the situation, alert others and apologize to them in the same word. Like „ope, I just bumped into you, don’t fall, I am sorry“.

I'm from South Central KS. Born and raised here. We definitely use the, "Ope, let me squeeze by you." Or "Ope, sorry about that." Especially now with social distancing in effect everywhere it's very polite and effective when you get too close to another customer. I'm finding I have more in common with my northern Midwestern brothers and sisters than I ever realized. Made a friend online from MI back in 2015 and we have visited each other a few times. MI almost feels like home to me. I would consider moving there but I hear your winters are pretty killer. Also had the joy of taking the ferry over to WI from Grand Rapids in summer 2019. More good Midwestern folks over there.

Charlie Berens Ope, Australia here Charlie. Love your videos. I kind of realise we say something similar here, but never realised we did until watched your vids. It’s more an oop, like a lazy woops, but definitely used in the same context. Keep up the great work. From the far away Shadow Lands!! 🙂

This is hilarious and so true. I have been out of the Midwest for 20 years but I still say “ope” for everything. And yeah, placement with the sentence is key.

People say it throughout North America. It's not unique or original to the Midwest, it's just a short way of saying "oops"

LOL. The people in the shadowy places like you too! I live in Manhattan, ate an açai bowl and some avocado toast, and went to art gallery openings during this past week. I wear skinny jeans and chunky glasses, and I have been to the Midwest exactly once--to Minneapolis. I'm a freaking walking stereotype. And I LOVE this guy! Ever since I discovered them, I've been binging on Charlie's videos for the past few days. They're great!
