I was in my school’s Student Council as a class representative. I mainly just attended meeting and helped with ideas like what to do for Spirit Week. I will say, my last President was great in his position. He took some issues that many of us students were facing (Not being able to use the printers, Strict gym wear policy, regulations about our water bottles) directly to the principal, and actually got results. While these issue could have probably been brought up by any student, I think he felt a great sense of responsibility and felt he would been taken more seriously if he entered in his capacity as Student Council President.

Yeah, those type of student body elections are very common in school. I didn’t have those in middle school or high school but I did have them in my college to be honest. My school was at a suburban area and we would have student elections for clubs, dormitory’s, honor clubs and of course student councils. They would have elections every year and students would often run, including me. But honestly, it is a popularity contest nonetheless. Students would only run for those positions in order to add something to their résumé or just the prestige itself. Just so they can say, “I’m President of this organization” or “I got that.” I never got elected to a higher position which was unfortunate at the time, but extremely fortunate, looking back at it and I’m glad I did otherwise I would’ve been overwhelmed with the position as well as schoolwork.

I always had outside time-30 minutes normally, 45 minutes in high school- usually lunch mixed with recess. I was allowed to go off campus in high school for lunch. Only for seniors. Sometimes, we even had class outside. Most of my teachers pushed going outside. We would go as a school to a park in pre-made teams and play capture the flag, ultimate frisbee, and all sorts of games mixed with high school and middle school. Teachers, even the Principal, were also a part of the games most of the time. That is the kind of school life you get when you pay for school. Free school, not so much.

Hearing about the cupcake giveaway reminded me of the Reese Witherspoon movie "Election" about a high school student president election. In the movie Reese (can't remember her character name) is a perfectionist (as well as a little bit psychotic) and determined to win the election, and in one of the scenes she goes around handing out cupcakes to people. "Where'd he pull that from?" Oh boy, this reminds me of a joke I haven't thought of in years. It's quite a bit dated but I'll tell it anyway: Three men were sitting together talking when suddenly a ringing sound came from one of them. The ringing man said "pardon me," and placed his palm to his ear and answered. When he was finished, he explained that he had a microchip installed in his hand to turn it into his personal telephone. The men went back to talking but were soon interrupted again by a loud beeping sound coming from another of them. This man pressed his forearm and the beeping stopped. He then explained he had a microchip installed in his forearm to be his pager, letting him know when he had important messages. The third man, feeling a little left out in this stuff, came up with an idea and excused himself to the restroom. He came back a few minutes later with toilet paper hanging out of his arse. When the other two men looked at this with raised eyebrows, he announced "will you look at that, I'm getting a fax!" WOW! Never thought I'd hear you say Gordy acted responsibly! Hahahaha! And then he gets potentially fired right after. LOL Once again it was great to watch this classic with you and hear your commentary. Until next time, cheers!

I feel like Good Luck Charlie is a good show to add to your list. It's centered more around family than school but has quite a decent amount of school-based episodes as well that would be right up your alley. It's one of the only disney/nick shows I look back on as an adult and still really like. It has aged very well and the humor is good

Yes, please go through the whole show. It's the best one that takes place in a school in my opinion. Regarding this episode, from my experiences School Presidents DO have some power but it really fluctuates and when I was in middle/high school it was more driven by making speeches as well as popularity.

I had a good amount of outdoor time in middle school. 30 minute recess and 1 hour PE almost every day. Our bathroom and fountain access was outside, so we'd get 5 minutes of outdoor time in between each class. Also, we could hang out and play in the courtyard if we finished our lunches quickly enough. I don't know how kids do it nowadays being stuck inside almost all day.

I remember when I was in high school, during elections one of the kids running for school president made a racist smear campaign against her opponent. The one that I remember most clearly is "Juan can mow my lawn." I don't remember having recess for say in Middle and High School, more like just a longer block of time between classes. We had a longer break between 2nd and 3rd period, like 10 extra minutes and during Lunch we could go pretty much wherever (within reason of course) that lasted like 50 minutes if I remember right. So it was pretty much up to you what you did during that time, if you wanted to go outside, the cafeteria, etc. You could. It wasn't called recess but you could go do that sort of thing if you wanted to during than.

10:55 I remember seeing something like this in Diary of a Wimpy Kid (the first book, I believe). Greg was running for treasurer for student council, and he decided to make posters advising students not to vote for the other candidate because he had head lice a long time ago. It didn’t take long before Vice Principal Roy caught up to him and confiscated all of his posters.

I went to middle school in the show's running period. We only had one recess period after lunch in 4th or 5th grade, the year before I missed recess for not eating everything for lunch so from then on I exclusively brought packed lunches. This was the catalyst for feeling less part of school as a collective. I'm not sure if 5th grade we didn't have recess. We for sure did not in middle school at all, and only had P.E. for a semester in 6th grade, then in 9th grade for high school. There wasn't any opportunity to socialize during middle school, outside of lunch, and talking during classes was discouraged, but electronic devices were allowed since they were quiet so I watched TV shows and even played video games in some classes instead. It was dreadful, to say the least, hence I remember things vividly.

My school was both an elementary and a middle school. So recess was split between outside and the gym. The gym had stations you had to go to (hula hoop, jump rope, walking around the gym, etc) Outside you could do what you wanted on the playground, parking lot or field. So the elementary school students would be outside while middle school was in the gym. And then they switched. I think they didn’t want both elementary and middle school on the playground at the same time. So we had less time outside than we would have had normally. Everybody was in the same lunch time since it was a small school.

We didn't have recess in middle school but we did have a longer lunch than in elementary so it doubled as social time. This is actually the first time of hearing about middle school recess, which doesn't sound like a bad idea imo. Also the secretary/treasurer type roles in student council and clubs are underrated, I sought/had those roles back in HS and it felt like an easy way to get into leadership roles as a more introverted person.

Also, I understand that concept of wacky show antics, but in actuality couldn’t Ned have just dropped out of the race if he originally didn’t want to be president? There was no reason he had to go through all of those crazy plants other than the aforementioned show antics. I mean, they couldn’t force him to be a part of the race, right? I never saw the appeal in running for class officers at all (introverted and all that). My guess to why it’s a big deal in class elections is this gives them a chance to cast their opinion (since they have to wait to actually vote as an adult). Whenever I give my perspective, this is with the context of living in Ohio. If you don’t like calling the three girls the “Huge Crew”, I suggest calling them the “Ned Fan Club”.

When I was in school, class elections were more realistic and not so over the top. Students ran and that’s it. And usually the most qualified and responsible student would win. Isn’t recess more of an elementary school thing? I have never heard of middle school having recess. That’s when you have study hall. In of my high schools, we had a free period where you can either stay in the cafeteria or just do whatever, probably go to the library or whatever. I just stayed in the cafeteria.
