I am so happy I came across your channel! All of your videos have been answering all of my questions and I love your insight. It is so honest and genuine. I live in California. For years I was torn between what I wanted to do in the psyche field, but knew I loved psychology(and working with people). I wanted to be a MFT at first or therapy ... but fell in love with wanting to help younger people. More specifically teenagers. And not so much with adults anymore. I also love the school setting and the idea of assessing of children/teens and finding ways to help them because there are so many different roles in the job. And it happens to be something I'm passionate about. Right now I am preparing myself for finding a grad program but currently preparing myself to being a research assistant in my undergrad right now to help me becoming a good candidate for a masters program(so far my GPA is solid and making sure I stand out the best way I can). I graduate with my BA this coming spring and hoping I get into a good masters program because I'm nervous about getting accepted because I hear so many different experiences lol🙏 Sorry for the long essay novel comment, but I got really excited hearing your insight. It confirms that I chose the right path and I can't wait to get there. Thank you so much for being transparent and informative Rachel. ❤ Love your channel.

Can you talk a little bit about your time as an ABA technician? I’m currently an undergraduate senior expected to graduate this May, and I am starting a new job as an RBT in ABA right after. :) I’m interested to hear your thoughts!!

Hello Rachel! This video was really insightful, i have been binging on your school psych videos. I wanted to ask you what you think about being a BCBA and a School Psychology at the same time. I am not sure if you are familiar with bcba, but i am directing this question to you because you mentioned being a behavior tech for a while. I am thinking about being a bcba and a school psychologist. Are we able to take electives in Ed.S programs? so i can take my bcba coursework while getting my ed.s degree. This was a mouthful, i hope you are able to understand lol.

Just in case anyone would want to move to CA and the cost of living scares you. Don’t let it, there are cheaper cities to live in and still make the 90-100k you just won’t be in the “FUN” cities like LA, SD, or SF

Hi! I’m an aspiring school psychologist, and I have two questions (maybe include in another video?) 1. Do you know anything about traveling school psychologists? 2. Do school psychologists also write up IEP’s? Thank you, and your awesome 👏🏻

I guess if you consider going to multiple schools in a school district a traveling psychologist, that would include me! My office isn’t in a school, and I travel to different school buildings to do my assessments. No I don’t write IEPs, but some school psychologists write goals for them (those who do counseling with students)

Any thoughts on what degree is most reasonable for this job? MA/MS, EdS, PsyD, PhD
@fatima_amber
@fatima_amber 2 жыл бұрын
so you have to get a degree from a program that has been accredited by the NASP in order to work. There's a state-by-state list here: www.nasponline.org/standards-and-certification/graduate-program-approval-and-accreditation/program-approval/approved-programs. They are divided into specialist level (ma/ms, eds) which would allow you to work in schools, or psyD/phD if you want a more research-focused career path. I hope this is helpful to you!

I have my M.A in Educational Psychology and a CAGS degree! My degree is considered a "specialists" level, which is what most school psychs have. I would say go for that route unless you want to be a professor or run a private practice

@@rachelferagne2188 cool! I am writing my thesis for an M.A. in Developmental Psych. (Writing on math anxiety actually 😊) This is the first I have heard of a CAGS - Would this be a path to become a school psychologist without going thru the entire process of another masters degree?? I will be a 10th grade bio teacher this year. And I am exploring the ways to utilize my degree long term. (I originally planned on becoming a researcher of course 😊)

How hard was it to get into grad school? I had a 3.8 GPA, was an after-school teacher, and had three years (prior) experience working with children. I only applied to 1 school and got accepted. (I only applied to 1 because I planned on taking a gap year of not accepted) Also, my school only accepted eight masters students. So, very competitive!!

Is there a taboo about being a male and wanting to pursue school psych? You mentioned 90% female. Would I be at a disadvantage to try?
@rachelferagne2188
@rachelferagne2188 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly your chances of getting into school psych programs would be greater! Diversifying the field is definitely a priority of most programs, so the more males that are interested in school psych, the better.

If I want to run a private practice as a school psychologist, which degree would be best for me, psy.s, psy.d, or ed.s?
@beepboop4285
@beepboop4285 2 жыл бұрын
Typically you need a phd to run private practice. However, I recently found out that in some states there is a path for EdS degrees to do private practice but finding information on its hard and it isn’t the case for most states so I’d 100% say phd! I’m not sure about a psyD though and would have to look that up.

Hi! Great information. So I have a question, is it possible to apply to a program that offers School Psychology certification if I already have a Masters in Psychology?
@rachelferagne2188
@rachelferagne2188 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You’d have to apply to the masters program like everyone else, but you could get exempt from taking certain classes if you’ve already taken some that are similar! One woman in my class was able to skip like 4 classes because she already had a masters in counseling for example.

I have a master's in Education and worked as a HS science teacher. I want to get into counseling now and I am about to go for another 2-3 year post-graduate program. Should I go for a MA in School Psychology Counseling, OR should I go for the MA in Administration?? So confusing.

If you want to do counseling with students, I would say applying to school psychology programs or school counseling programs would be best. You would be doing various roles though as a school psych (including counseling), while being a school counselor you would have one main role.

do you have any recommendations for careers within the psychology field for introverts?
@ayoomiax
@ayoomiax 3 жыл бұрын
school psychology is a good field for introverts in my opinion. In every job you'll have to interact with people one way or another, but in school psych, you typically work independently and when you do assessments they are pretty structured, so it's not like you're sitting there having conversations all day. Then a lot of your time goes into report writing, which is great for introverts because you don't socialize with people. I decided to do this instead of counseling because I am also an introvert and sitting down talking to people all day long would make me uncomfortable. You do go to meetings, but again its not like having to conversate about your day or anything. Just about the child

@@stephstephL99 I am not a school psychologist yet! I am going to be applying for grad school for school psychology within a few months. I have worked in many school districts and I just wanted to let you know about school psychologists being in charge of meetings. I have horrible social anxiety and I am very introverted as well. It is hard to find any jobs where you won’t have to speak much or put yourself out there. Everything will feel very uncomfortable and nerve racking in the beginning, but with experience and knowledge, I do think it gets slightly better! I have to remind myself this everyday! As long as I am trying my best, I am knowledgeable, and I care, no one can really be upset or judge me when I stumble over words, etc.
