Summary and extrapolation on Schopenhauer’s essay “Metaphysics of Love” published in 1844 (The World as Will & Representation vol. 2).
Schopenhauer runs through his take on the biological mechanisms behind love + attraction and the dangers of pursuing love. From this, we can come to some conclusions on how to select our romantic partners and whether we should stay in a relationship!

Schopenhauer is one of those rare philosophers, who throws you a ladder to get you out of the labyrinth.

I've had two long-term, cohabiting relationships, as well as an episode of unrequited love, and I think Schopenhauer's philosophy of love is very wise. I let go of a brilliantly compatible relationship with someone I shared a deep friendship with for the chance to pursue a girl I'd fallen in love with romantically, but she rejected me. I then entered a relationship with a girl I loved romantically but with whom I wasn't compatible, and inevitably it ended. So much pain, for me and my exes, has come from pursuing romantic love rather than a love based on compatibility and friendship. It sounds dramatic, but I do now regard romanticism as an enemy of love.

Hey mate well done on this, nicely expounded, like that you included the limitations of his scientific speculations, was a man of his time in that way at least! From memory he read a review of The Origin of Species and approved of it, but maybe his age at the time didn't allow him to fully engage with it and tweak his philosophy accordingly. Though he was stubborn enough that I can imagine him refusing to budge also lol, cheers from Sydney

I'm currently writing a paper for my philosophy class and you have done a fantastic job of outlining some of the key concepts I needed to cover. You had phenomenal summaries of Schopenhauer's quotes which made writing this paper a breeze. Definitely dropping a sub for that.

Once you see all human activity as a function of demonstrating your fitness to mate you will rarely look at it any other way. or as McLovin says, "BREAK YOURSELF FOOL!!!!!"

This movie has also its existential philosophy theme particularly to the character of Fogell who stood himself as a strong self or can be transcribed as the concept of Ubermensch by Nietszche

So think with the head from upstairs, instead of your junk, when choosing your lifelong home career? Wasn't there a wise old man in one of the Socratic dialogues who rejoiced at impotence, for the new clarity it brought him? Loving your philosophy videos :)

Yes, Cephalus, at the beginning of The Republic, a respected elder who said that while many complained of old age because it had caused them to lose the abilities of youths, he appreciated in it certain advantages, including relief from the tyranny of the sex drive.

because the kids are made of the parents. they are the parents. when the parents see the kids they see themselves. it's a narcissism thing. why do you think people dont instead adopt when there's so many parentless kids out there? people love themselves more than they are willing to admit

Kids carry parents’ genes. And when Schopenhauer talks about ‘the species’ or ‘the next generation’, we could as well understand ‘conservation of our own genes.
