I've had my schrade hatchet for 3 years now! I love this thing, I use it for my camping and off road trips. It's no replacement for an axe but if you need fire wood or to make some stakes for your tent this thing is awesome. Great quality.

I first found this product advertised by several outdoors KZfaqrs. It seemed like a pretty tough long-lasting tool for the price. So it took me almost no time to make the purchase. When I first got it I was super happy with it. I took it outside and cutted a couple 3" logs with it, I splitted them and everything seemed perfect. I liked it so much that I bought another one for my best friend. Weeks later I went camping and I used the tool on dry 5" logs. After several well made cuts, the handle snaped in half (between the rubber grip) and the uncovered handle. So much for a 36 dollar toy. I contacted the warranty person at Taylor Brands LLC and she was very nice. However, the only procedure for the warranty to operate is shipping the broken item back to them. The problem for me is that I live in Mexico, and having the item shipped would cost me 30 USD + 5.95 that Taylor Brands LLC charges for a replacement shipping. The lady in charge gave me no other options. So now, I have a worthless broken toy with a supposedly good lifetime warranty. Will I buy one of these products again? Hell no! Neither will I recommend them.

You know they made another version with a fixed handle since they heard of the problem?
@lequiquette
@lequiquette 8 жыл бұрын
+SSketchii Yes I did hear they changed something. however I'm still stuck with a hatched in two pieces. if I want it fixed I need to pay 36 dls for shipping and the fee. If I wanted the new one... i need to spend extra 36 too. I'll tell you. for 72 dls i would rather get the fiskars x7 AND the husqvarna hatchet, or a Wetterlings! ;) buying the Fisher Price quality toy was an expensive mistake.

Great vid. Preparedmind101 has broken 2 of these Schrade axes (exact model) from accidental overstrike. It broke in the exact same spot of the curve of the handle both times. Buyer beware.

Awesome review man. Great video angles, lighting, quality of video and sound. The split screen is an interesting touch as well. I bought the Scaxe 2L, but haven't tried it out yet. I'm considering this one as a survival hatchet when hunting. Thanks.

It was probably high 30's - low 40's where we were at, and you can see the hatchet did fine. Seems like mildly cold weather is no problem for it, but everything has it's breaking point...

Just a thought. The Ferro rod being stored in the handle also means the handle is not solid. Even better, the ferro rod might fall out (and ferro rods wear quickly) . Yet another level of better the fact that if it's cold out the handle might fail. Sorry Man. No disrespect: but I don't think I'd rely on this more than easy hiking distance from a beach cabana in the summer.
@sparknorthwest404

+Rick Cove I own one, and I can tell you that there is pretty much no way for the ferro rod falling out, unless you dont notice it getting caught on something. The ferro rod's hole is so small that it really wont compromise the handle's stability.

i agree. there is no way for the ferro rod to fall. if anything .. the "tool" will snap on you in half and perhaps you lose the head of the thing while if flies away from you ;p

See Preparedmind 101 on the SCAXE cold temp failure. Two in a row broke at the handle joint. Having a hollowed out section for the rod makes no sense...

I don't understand why you can't just use the chopping part of the axe to create the spark instead of using the side of the axe to create sparks. I don't think using the sharp part of the axe to make spark will cause the axe to dull faster. It is made for chopping woods, that little ferrod shouldn't be much of a worry.

Yes Chris from pm101 broke two of these but he was testing in sub 0 temps realistically how many of you are gunna be chopping wood at those temps and not be using a splitting axe or something larger

Just saw a video of a guy batoning that same axe through ~6" logs and it was doing a proficient job. (Okay the wood looked dry and weak) but it was kicking ass. I've never packed in an axe but I always wonder if it would be worth it. Also, are the more expensive axes that much better than the cheaper ones, Cold Steel et al.

It looks very ergonomic! Perhaps a 1" strap of gorilla tape horseshoe'd over the end of the handle to keep the rod in, rather than carrying it separately? I'm always curious of the head to handle engineering on these plastic handled models. I sent the head flying on a Fasthawk last year! I'll will be neat if you end up using the scaxe2 often and can give us a durability update. Thanks for the great video Scout!

A fine tool for its purpose even if it's plastic. Everyone seems to be so surprised that plastic can break in sub zero weather when abused... this was never a secret. Used properly it is just fine but I still prefer hickory or all metal. Even they can break when abused enough. Good times.

I have never taken a hatchet backpacking, but I do when I tailgate with the wife and kids (bigger fires and a lot more wood to process). I have been using (ok, don't laugh) a craftsman that I "re-profiled" with a bastard-file, then brought to a crude edge with a fine draw-file. It is pretty ugly. I should really get a decent camp axe.

Be careful using this thing in real cold temps, my buddy was on a week long trip with temp around 0 and after a miss hit the hatchet split at the handle. Its a common problem from what I've read, they need to redesign this thing and do away with the ferro rod

this is the same one that broke on Preparedmind101. Not only once but twice. If you are in extreme cold weather don't count on this axe. If you are in warm weather than it should be a good axe.
@biguy525
@biguy525 10 жыл бұрын
They are a nice hatchet if you don't subject them to the extreme cold. Preparedmind101 just put up two videos where the handles broke on two different hatchets. They think between the cold and the hole in the handle is what caused the failure.
@TheLateBoyScout
@TheLateBoyScout 10 жыл бұрын
Just saw that. Disappointing, but not too surprising given the extreme cold, and synthetic materials.
@shotokido678
@shotokido678 10 жыл бұрын
***** I think the cold had a lot to do with it, but that fire rod in the handle thing presents an area of weakness. I think that played a role in the failures PM101 encountered. Also, you're at least the 2nd person who has reported that the rod tends to shake loose. It's a nice idea in theory, but I suspect it's not that viable in the long run.
