A tense spaceship captain and co-pilot set out to investigate a comet, when a technical fault cuts to the core of their relationship problem…
"White Lily" by Tristan Ofield
#DUST #scifi #shortfilm
More About White Lily:
Leon and Isobel are nearing the critical point of a long space journey. Leon relaxes, watching a hologram of blue skies and recalling a holiday he and Isobel had - but doesn’t remember one of the features she draws attention to, a vase with a white lily. The purpose of their expedition is to investigate a comet. Perhaps because of his fractiousness, Leon sets a flight path that Isobel considers dangerous, and the ship is damaged in the process of its exploration. Buoyed by the success of their trip, Leon and Isobel discuss what they’ll do when they return to Earth. Isobel gets a word wrong, and it becomes apparent there’s something is amiss - she is a holographic companion for Leon, based on the persona of a former lover, and is suffering from the same fault as the ship’s other systems. Isobel insists that Leon reboot her, but he is reluctant to do so since it will wipe her out.
Their relationship is what’s keeping him together, and for Isobel it’s one that’s based on someone else’s memories. Isobel insists on the reboot, and Leon reminisces about the ‘real’ Isobel, for once addressing the hologram as if it’s her. These are their last moments together. Then the reboot is completed and the holographic companion that was Isobel asks Leon in a blank computerized voice what he wants to call her. Leon prepares for a very long and very lonely trip back to Earth.

"Subject, Verb, Object" is perhaps the most bitter sweet thing I've ever heard. I think that line may have fallen flat for a majority of the audience if not for the stellar emotional performance by the actors. Both overt in the delivery and subtle in the reception. What a great moment.

This is brilliant. The hologram had developed her own personality over the years they had been together. Learned about him and how to be with him. Then all of a sudden his journey back of 3 years will be with a stranger.

Haven't read all the comments (who does?), but most talk is about the pilot's reactions. It was the hologram who was crying before reboot. The pilot used It to keep his feelings of a past relationship alive. As his picture of her personality formed, the It became She. The hologram became a living entity and in the end understood, just as he, that it is memories which make us more than mere machines. A telling point is the small sour comment, near the beginning, about his being tired with her as he walks out to fix something. Who has not thought of how it would be to "reboot" a relationship? In this case he actually could. He was sad, but still had the time and possibility to start again. The final tears were from the hologram who knew exactly what she was losing.

The ships AI had me fooled from the get go. The woman's acting was flawlessly done. The guys acting was equally great. His emmotions and connection could be felt. The ship design is superb. When the armoured shield moved into place followed by the trench run had my full attention. Well done on this short.

But in vacuum, the ship won't move with swooshing. Nor with one asymetrically placed engine. But the shield is a nice idea.

@Hellsong89
@Hellsong89 5 жыл бұрын
@@Aotearoa_Kiwi No as stated, objective was to get higher quality scanning data, not samples. Ship design was aside of the idea of shield pretty horrid for deep space exploration and science ship. If it takes 20 years ship like that wont have enough space to produce food, even with 100% efficient recycling systems and why would you need atmospheric entry capable ship for deep space comet chase? Crew of such ship should have least two incase one is incapacitated like trap under heavy weight. Hologram wont help one bit in that case. Shields design makes bit sense, though front peaces actuators are all open to receive damage and for jams. Also having such end peace does nothing to protect impacts from sides, hence increasing mass of the ship with out increasing protection that much. Mass that btw is in front of the ship making it really nose heavy. Someone with more aerodynamic expertise might be able to tell how well that thing can manage re entry, but my guess is that it will come down as a rock in flaming pile of scrap.
@nickster0007
@nickster0007 5 жыл бұрын
Hellsong89 : in space aerodynamics have no relevance. A ship like that would likely dock at a space station. Or more likely come down to the surface via anti-gravity. It is implied that the technology is there since they obviously have artificial gravity and he isn’t floating around. The nacelles are out away from the core implying the method of thrust is harmful to the crew. At the same time however they would be very susceptible to damage when flying through the comets debris field. That was the only part that didn’t make sense to me.

My test of a short film is did it draw my attention to an immersive degree? Did I not want it to end? Could it have a prequel and a sequel? This film nailed it. This is a story with lots of room for expansion between the current termini.

I'm not going to argue the ghost or spirit concept of intelligence. I will say that this is much deeper than A.I., digital memory vs.organic brain cells. The video presents a dilemma when dealing with Alzheimer's disease and brain injuries. What makes us who we are and where does the person go when all memory is lost? Complete amnesia is rare but imagines coming out of a coma after years with no recollection of who you were. The heartbreak is for the caretakers and those who knew you.

@DUST I really love these short SciFi films, often adapted from short stories - their morals are often wonderfully sublime and deep, thoughtful and meaningful, far more so at times than full length cinema productions that have to keep the viewers attention fixed with violence and sex. Short films do not need such diversions, they are far more honest and down to earth. Thank you all so much for producing and uploading these fantastic films !😘😘😘

The story is touching and well-drawn, filled with detail to explore and understand later as some point clicks, and a simple, emotional flow towards ... Understanding love and the horror of loneliness perhaps? Great stuff, that just goes to show what can be achieved by committed individuals on a very limited budget. Thank you all.

But who will remind him of the white lily, when he forgets a detail. And who will he reminisce with? Plus the only experiences they have will be those in this confined space. Something he knows all too well.

@@Temp0raryName Not necessarily. They obviously have a virtual reality system of some sophistication. They could have "holodeck" adventures that feel pretty real. And the "White Lilly" might in fact refer to such an adventure, experienced with the first companion (rather than an actual woman). Recalling precise details could be an exercise aimed at helping the crewman keep his sanity during the long flight.

@@Temp0raryName True. His experiences with the first holo is lost forever when he 'purged' her, unless there is a minute by minute backup of all of her experiences right from the moment she came into existence. The Nebulium example was quite intresting.

Duncan Brown Thank you for that! She reminded me of *someone*, but I'm sure I never would have worked out for myself that it was Jenny Agutter! Her name is actually Siddhii Lagrutta, which I think is slightly amusing: She's not Agutter, she's Lagrutta! (I'm a very simple man.)

A lot has been said on the good story, but how about the design of the space ship. Might not be the most realistic design, but I realy love it! The closing nose is awsome!

Lovely story. I acutaly thought she was an android after he said "I'm sick of you" and when she says "you're no fun...but I love you anyway and his response is "ISABELLE!" as if to say "stop saying that because you're not real and it could never be. I love the subtle nuances of both isolation and relationships that have been shown here. Very intelligent, superb acting, directing, writing, direction of photography...I love every facet of this film. Great work peepz

Any long-time relationship will go through phases like that. However he regretted those words, at the end. He had not sought to 'change her for a younger model'. She was his link to better times. From those past experiences she could help him conjure up a hopeful vision of the future. The rebooted version will only have the experiences they build up in this monotonous and depressing environment. And he knows that.

I knew she was a holo from the first mention of the Lily, but no matter what angle I look at it from -- Was she gaining real feelings? Was she just mimicing more of what he wanted? It's endearing and bittersweet. **terrific acting** made this story great. @tristan ofield, thanks!
