The 6 stealth ships had caught Donny without his pants and even then they lost more than half of their numbers. If Donny had made America great again and deployed all his carried escort-ships, the result would have been another. Even minimal order consisted from 1 Tachi-class corvette and 2 destroyers could change the result, what to say about full? I clearly remember that Donnager's full order of carried escort-ships consist from 2 corvettes and 6 destroyers. It would be 9 against 6 in normal situation.

It's telling that the attackers had every single advantage the could get stacked on their side, and the Donnager had every quite a few disadvantages (hubris, underestimating opponents) stacked on it's side. And it still ended up being a suicide mission for the attackers.

The stealth ships were not approaching in a single file line when the Donnager first detected them. The stealth ships were burning in formation close together. The stealth composites helped reduced each of the six ships' radar signature to resemble just that of just one ship, while the close distance between ships made rhe drive plume look like that of one ship. An analogy would be those LED flashlights that have multiple LEDs but when far enough away look like one bright light.

Very nice start for the new series, one small note to add, the Donnager was crewed by somewhat green crew members, who barely had experience against small ships, no real full combat experience, which just goes to show how good the Donnager was, that even when crewed by less than expert hands, it still took down 4 out of 6 highly deadly targets after an ambush.

for the 9 min mark. its its not because the railgun shell hit the ammo storage but because railguns shells shatter at a molecular level at around 3km/s. its like throwing glass at the ground the harder you throw it the more shards. railguns shells turn into HEAT shells when they impact a target. which is why whipple plating is so important for ships

This is crazy, Yao wasn't wrong that the attackers were on a suicide mission, as their losses even before closing the distance were catastrophic. In IRL war most armies / navies would consider disengaging after 10-20% losses. Her mistake was that these guys are actually suicidal. Was it ever explained why these guys have such low regard for their own lives? To lose 6 ships in one mission was not a good use of resources...

Protogen was shown in Season 2 to be in the business of non-invasively removing its scientists' empathy through focused magnet therapy. Given that they did that to ensure that their scientists would be unaffected by petty morality, one can only imagine how they played with the self-preservation and aggression instincts of their soldiers. Of note, when Holden comes across a downed (but alive) Protogen boarder during the escape from the Donnager; the man simply accepted his impending death with complete and utter serenity. So they probably did SOMETHING to their minds.

I need to pick some nits with the radar shadow argument. It would be very hard to hide behind a leader when manoeuvres are taking place. If the ships were perfectly aligned head to tail then the drive plums would be perfectly aligned and the ships in front of each would be scorched. Very, very badly, and very, very quickly. Those drives need to be putting out colossally hot and fast exhaust to accelerate their hulls at even a fraction of G. Elsewhere in The Expanse their threat as a weapon is directly touched on. If the ships were not directly aligned there would still be a problem of drive plumes. As above, these are phenomenally hot. Therefore, they are visible from a very long way off. I.e., the Donnager saw the stealth "ship" heading for the Knight and made the move to intercept first. And at no point did the Donnager seem to have any trouble seeing that the ship(s) was out there. Only that they did not recognize it and could not distinguish the numbers. One explanation I have seen (although, I cannot recall if there was any substantiation in the books) was the the ships were physically docked. This is kind of plausible. But it only gets them so far. If they were head to tail, only one drive can be on and it will provide 1/6th the effective delta-v. If they had split up they might well have beaten the Donnager to the shuttle (we don't know because distances, times, and thrusts are only hinted at, if at all). Another is that they were flying in very close formation (or were linked side to side). Probably more plausible, as then all 6 ships can use their drives. Assuming their helm's were all slaved, this could be done safely. The big advantages might be that it becomes hard to discriminate the seperate hulls from range. This would add to the "you cannot tell who we are and what we are capable of" angle. Ditto for the drives. Is that one big drive plume? 6 large-ish drives from one big ship? Or 6 totally distinct drives? Hard to reference your database of engine/ship combos if you cannot discriminate what engine(s) you are looking at.

While you are correct that they were actually just flying in a tight formation, flying in a line wouldn't be a problem in this situation The shadow case by the lead ship is effectively infinite in length, as long as the following ships are behind it, they can be 100 meters away or 10,000 meters and they'd still be concealed, so they can just follow along at a distance that won't get them disintegrated by the lead

This is why many modern radar systems multiplex radar emitters and recievers in different locations to prevent it. One of the things that wasn't mentioned in this is in a space show it is actually harder to do this than in atmosphere - if they are moving on intercept courses they will have to be 'leading' arriving at your predicted position. But you aren't at that position, the shadow will be constantly changing meaning that the trailing ships will need to be constantly changing their position to remain occluded

CAPT Yao fought like a real amateur (due to plot reasons). She had "One" that became Six, firing 4 missiles each, she responded with 18 of her own, Five went through, she went with Railguns, but they had them too, and even way less powerful, still 4 vs 2, and at that moment (if not before), she should've fired more missiles, and while enemy distracted, picked them off "one by one" with her "Two Big Guns". As for being surprised by "railguns on ships this size", Amun Ra isn't that small ship really, but its radar cross-section might appear smaller on sensors due to Stealth.

Another flaw due to plot reasons is when the contact reached her engagement range. She should have ordered the crew of her escort ship to board their vessel and wait at first shots launch her escort to add more firepower and act as both a decoy and stopgap for holes the PDC net.
@elvisibra

@@williamhare4456 Yes. At the time there was one Light Frigate in Donnager's hangar bay, presumably there was at least crew complement for stations necessary for extra short mission, or one shift. While mentioning shifts, previous "Official channels" seem to always forget that, regarding a naval vessel, even shortest durabilities are few days or weeks, thus, complement will always be a double (two shifts), or more, of stations that have to be manned. At least, that's how The Military approaches things i.e. when enter Command Deck (and other crucial areas) there will never ever be empty chairs there, like on the Roci with only 4 of them, thus conclusion that ships like that can be operated by only few is false, I mean, even if maybe can be, will not be allowed to. @@alexkatc59 I don't know about that, maybe in the books. On TV, we saw only one Light Frigate (during taking in Knight), and later. 4 platforms empty, one for Knight, and one (in the opposite side row) for the Tachi. And in that scene we can scale Donnager hangar by inside: it has six double stories + two one storey (one below those six, and one above), now one storey in Donnager is visible being size of 1.5 (or little more) normal storey (5-6m), thus one double is 10-12m. Means that ceiling height of the hangar bay is 70-84m. Door from the outside has pattern on them that seems to "copy" those stories inside, but not sure, cause bottom of the door is rather leveled with the hangar bay floor, while on the top, hangar bay ceiling seems to be somewhat taller (few meters or a storey)..

I need to pick a couple of nits (the core point of there being plot holes is well founded). The dialog clearly states that the bogies were coming inside the effective range of guided missiles. It is in direct reaction to that report that Yao orders the railguns powered up. We can ponder the details of the missiles having a minimum range on the side, but it is clearly established. There is no reason to believe that firing more would have had any effect. (incidentally, we do not know for sure how many missiles were exchanged. We have a good idea about the first wave from each side. But the editing creates the impression of some time going by between bridge scenes. So, it could have been one wave from each side or many. It is hard to prove either way) They were surprised because they had never seen (nor been briefed of the existence) of a ship that size having a railgun. And they could see its size. The drive plumes alone told them the masses of the ships (you can see the plume; what it is made of and how fast it is going. You can see that its origin (i.e., the ship) is speeding up or down at some rate. F=M*A, you know the mass of the ship). They also could 'see' the ships with visuals. The hull shape being displayed is what Holden reacts to. So they know the volume. And yet, they had never seen nor heard report of a ship that small having a railgun. Therefore, it is hardly a plot hole or incompetence to be surprised that something new and surprising happened.

This battle was great to watch, I noticed in the show that whenever one of these ships are destroyed, it seems that it is the result of lacking a proper escort protection to create a defensive line for ship. Think of the donnager as an aircraft carrier today, in operation they are almost always the center of a strike group. I wonder if the donnager would have survived if the tachi had been properly crewed and deployed to escort the ship and protect it with the PDCs.
@matthewfullmer3035
@matthewfullmer3035 Жыл бұрын
I have always found the Donnager's hangerbay (and holding a vessel as large and capable as the Tachi to be a bit of a plot hole. If the Corvette-class (I believe that is what they explain the Tachi/Roci as belonging to in the books) is so capable of making cross-system journeys, why have a carrier at all? If the big ships want local transports for personnel and cargo transfer, and boarding actions, why give them such a large and capable ship (i.e., 20 torpedoes, 6 PDCs, crew of a dozen...)? It all feels like an idea the authors realised did not quite work after it got the protagonists into their own ship and dropped it (i.e., we never see any evidence of such large hangers and/or such capable integral escorts ever again; not even with other Donnager-class ships). As for the analogy to modern carrier groups, that does not really hold up in space. Sites like Atomic Rockets have detailed explanations. But the basic gist is that anything a manned fighter can do, a missile can do for either cheaper or better. And there is no horizon so there is no limit of the reach of the parent ship's weapons (and their range is immense in zero-g, which the show hints at superbly; i.e., Yao calmly leaving the bridge after missiles have been launched as a prime example). And for much the same, there is no need for anti-submarine support because there is nowhere to hide. The stealth ships are an analog to subs, but they are 1) not a regular part of the major militaries and 2) as the show makes clear, you can see them when they use their engines.
@jorvoyte6042
@jorvoyte6042 Жыл бұрын
@@matthewfullmer3035 I don't think I was going with fighters part of the analogy, I was more referring to a support fleet, such as the tachi providing more defense against missiles and engaging the stealth ships alongside the Donnager. The carrier analogy is more about protecting expensive capital ships with smaller cheaper ships.
@matthewfullmer3035
@matthewfullmer3035 Жыл бұрын
@@jorvoyte6042 That is a fair point. I generalised to the fighter question because that is a common argument and painted you with that broad brush incorrectly. But I still think my argument largely holds. Modern support ships are designed around countering specific types of threats. Mostly, fighters and subs. Without those in a realistic space environment, one would expect less need for them. Additionally, the need to protect a carrier is largely because of how vulnerable it is on account of being a fighter carrier-launcher-recoverer. The Donnager is much more akin to a WWI battleship. "Escorts" in that period were mostly older, smaller battleships. These rarely behaved in anything approaching a screening fashion. The big ships wanted to get in the line and fire because they had the greatest capabilities when there. It is a fair question as to why the Donnager did not deploy the Tachi to help. I can come up with several ideas (besides plot device to get the protagonists into their own capable ship). But really they all seem to eventually boil down to "the entire point of the Donnager battle seems to be establishing that something wholly new and unexpected has changed the playing field. Both the UN and the MCRN did not see it coming at all and it is a threat to both." In that context, I find it understandable that an experienced commander could be caught off guard by a clever and high tech surprise and not have every last resource deployed. But one has to buy that premise to explain it.

I would contend, considering the damage it did to the stealth ship fleet, the Donnie won a pyrrhic victory. Those ships have to be a large fraction the cost of the Donnager itself, and Mars still has half a dozen more.

Ok... Hot take here: The Donager is basically the Expanse's version of "Worf" from TNG... Worf had a badass reputation as a warrior, so when the new bad guy of the week comes on, they have to beat the crap out of Worf to prove how dangerous they are... enter the Donager- oh it's a badass Martian Super Battleship! Only the two we see fight in the show both end up floating chunks of debris.

Even though it lost it still won in the end by eradiacting the ships that tried to take it not to mention how the tachi/rocinante eventually killed the last of the stealth ships so donnager got at least one more kill even in death

Another factor of the "shadow" concept you mentioned is only part of the reason this could work. IRL, this is a problem of resolution. Each radar system has a minimum area, in terms of azimuth and depth, that it can discriminate between seperate targets. It all a part of the physical components, signal parameters, and the signal processing that define a systems abilities.

Honestly the main thing that stands out to me here is that Expanse combat, while very cool, does not make much sense. Engaging in missile warfare with PDCs as your main defenses is sort of akin to refusing to parry in a knife fight, and just relying on body armor. Not strictly impossible per se, but quite stupid. There's some other inconsistencies, like the lack of networking or the fact that apparently somehow presumably laser based military comms are being jammed, but this just jumped out at me a bit too hard to ignore.

I have seen these comments and went to go check it out. Unfortunately i do not own any of the books where this battle took place so i need to relly on the wiki and other sources. Of which there are not many. So this topic is most likely going to be put on the back burner until i can figure out how to get accurate and detailed information to work from.

@@scienceinsanity6927 What i mentioned were actually three separate battles, not one. In very-much-abreviated form: McKenna's Ultimatum (in 2315): The commander of essentially the entirety of humanity's space-navy parked his fleet in orbit and told the squabbling politicians and/or warlords on the planet to get their shit together - or be relegated to the past-tense from orbit. Case Amber (2578)A remarkably succesful attempt to thwart and drive away/destroy technologically superior fleets in order to avoid forceful annexation of one of the realms in the Periphery Kerensky's Return (2777) The grand finale of the Amaris Civil War. Only the last bastion of the Usurper remained: Terra itself and the heavily fortified space around it. Not quite to the same extent as Holy Terra in WH40k, but not as far off as you might think. And still, Kerensky managed to crack those defenses.... (to later be greeted by none other than the remains of the Royal Black Watch.) ..and it all had begun with but one word. Kerensky had said "No."

What has always confused me is the fact that the Donny was NOT alone... She had smaller ships near her that the stealth ships blew up... No one ever discusses these ships or drones or whatever they are... But they are there on screen till they get destroyed in the torpedo exchange / barrage...
@scienceinsanity6927

I think you might be the incorect one here. Every source of information on the battle from both the books and the show expressly state or show that the donnager is alone, it left behind it's support fleet bar the uncrewed tachi in it hangar in order to get to the distress signal first. The rest of the Jupiter fleet was deployed on patrol operations or in "port" at the time and thus would have taken days at minnimum to reach the donny and help. By that time the stealth ships would have captured or detroyed the knight. Captain Yao decided to leave them behind because she believed the unknown ships were belter vessels on a suicidal mission. So she didnt think any assistance was needed. They gloss over that in the show, but nod to it when she says that "whoever they are, whatever they've come to do, it just became a suicide misison" You might be thinking of another battle because Donnager class ships show up several times in the books and the show during large scale fighting where their damaged or destroyed.

The Donnager did not deploy his carried escort-ships for some stupid reasons like a captain's pride looks like. Minimal order consisted from 1 Tachi-class corvette and 2 destroyers could change the result, what to say about full? I clearly remember that Donnager's full order of carried escort-ships consist from 2 corvettes and 6 destroyers. It would be 9 against 6 in normal situation and 4 against 6 if Captain gave order to deploy escort-ships (1 corvette and 2 destoyers at that moment).
