Researchers say ultra-processed foods that are high in fats, starches, sugars and additives now make up 73% of the U.S. food supply, even though they are linked to health issues like diabetes, obesity, cancer and depression. Scientists say these foods should be regulated with tobacco-style warnings and advertising bans. Trish Cotter, global lead for the Food Policy Program at Vital Strategies, joined CBS News to discuss ultra-processed foods.

It's funny how alot of these foods that have been around for decades were actually made different when they started It's over time that they changed due to change in management or ownership so along the line the recipes changed when they started adding more ingredients I watch the things that made America on the history channel and one of the themes was foods that built America and boy aside from what I already know about foods I still was amazed at what this show had to teach me When I was a kid we didn't eat a bunch of frozen foods or ultra processed manufacture foods And at 40 I still eat more like the older days Fresher foods The only process that comes across my table is the cleaning/chopping method of produce and the cutting process for meats I prefer cooking at home But when we decide to go out we limit fast food Not a common thing for us And restaurants we don't hit a lot of major chains The mom and pop places serve better foods

The problem isn't that whole foods need to be cheaper... it's that people need to place greater value on their health. People need to stop thinking of the cheaper stuff as "food". If you compare them by nutritional value and the cost of eventual healthcare you'll see that the "cheaper" food isn't actually cheaper. You're paying less money because there's less "food" in what you're purchasing. Everything you can eat shouldn't be thought of as "food". Also, there used to be classes in school called "Home Economics". If you teach people how to use money effectively in regards to health and nutrition you'll have people who know how to acquire better value for their money and how to preserve and extend the value of what they purchase. My grandmother did it, as a widow, raising her grandchild and I never went hungry or had less than a full plate of food. Plus there was a network of family, relatives and neighbors and a garden tended to faithfully. There are many controllable variables to the home making equation that people today tend to ignore and focus on something "somebody else" should do to make things easier for them.

My great / grandparents were farmers, ate unprocessed foods, cooked their own meals, raised their livestocks, and lived up to 103 years old. When my parents came to America, the health issues arose from the American diet. Processed foods left to right, that nearly cut down the life expectancy of my parents in half. My mom suffered 3 strokes. Diabetes, high blood pressure, my aunts and uncles suffered from strokes, cancer, diseases. You name it. When I look at my grandparents, great grandparents, they were very healthy because of their lifestyle. So yeah……… it doesn’t take a genius to figure this out, cut out the processed food, exercise, eat whole food, cook your own meals.

@@duckmercy11 Eating healthy isn't necessarily more expensive. It's an illusion. You can buy a ready made meal for cheaper than buying all of the ingredients that went into it, but if you were to buy all the ingredients then you would get more than one meal. Processed food is marketed as tasty, cheap, filling and even touted as 'healthy' because it has eggs or meat or something green resembling a vegetable in it. People on a low income buy it because often fresh food is not available where they live, they are rushed for time, they might not have cooking equipment, etc. but also because processed food is made to look appealing, quick and easy. If you cut animal products out of your diet, you food bill will be a lot lower - beans and lentils are cheaper than meat and dairy. We found this out quite by accident when we decided to go vegetarian years ago. Our food bill went down significantly even though we didn't eat 'expensive' meat before that.

People aren't going to change because of a warning from the surgeon general. The thing that drove down smoking was killing advertising for the tobacco industry. A similar change needs to occur for ultra-processed foods if you want systemic change. However do you put that on Frito-Lay or fast food joints? How about the small restaurant that's cooking a fake chicken patty for a vegetarian? Changing advertising regulations for ultra-processed foods would be quite difficult since it encompasses so much pre-made food (the scientist even mentioned breads with more than 5 ingredients). We need to make healthy pre-made options easily accessible to people *and* we need to create a risk/reward system for food producers so they have incentives (whether to avoid fines or to receive grants from the government) to make healthy options. Broccoli and apples have always been good for you and cheap but people are busy and don't want to take the time to prepare these. Of course no one is going to go for a lentil soup if all they have is McDonald's in their area.

I was the only person on staff who didn't eat the hospital food and was constantly bringing up nutritional needs of our patients. I'm so happy that 50 years later finally medicine is embracing this. I hope people will take heed to the warning labels, especially children and pregnant women

When I was working in a recovery center, I was very adamant about them making sure the food they were buying were healthy. It wasn't always the case, but I brought up the types of ingredients and how it would affect their gut health as well as mental health. The reality is if they really wanted them to improve overall, then they would no longer be a customer. The thing is placing money over peoples lives is something America needs to work on. We would be thrive if given the opportunity as a society and within the community if they valued health.

actually it is impossble to walk through ANY supermarket and not walk past the processed food. They are allways placed right at the entrance as well as at the the end and ofc. in between as well. Supermarkets these days are designed so that pretty much any shopping list will send you through the entire market just searching for what you need. They know what products customers will usually buy together and will place those intentionally as far appart as possible apart form each other. The best advice imo would be "write a list of what you need and just stick to it!"

Therefore don't confuse people with all this "PROCESSED" conflation. Its irrelevant to the message. Don't eat high risk junk. Please someone label the high risk foods for people. Frozen broccoli isn't causing diabetes. Whether its "processed" is 100% irrelevant. Messaging in this piece is going to confuse many people. According to this piece processed food is bad therefore the healthiest food is unwashed. If its made mainly of cheap vegetable oil or pure carb and fat, then thats a high risk if habitual. Stop conflating healthy food with processed food or ise a different term. How about "unhealthy" (in excess.) High risk (in excess). Media companies should be better than this.

Yeah saying washed veggies are minimally processed was weird, maybe they're referring to the industrial chemical wash some produce undergoes, like bagged pre-cut salads?

Veggies and cut up veggies are not processed foods. What is processed foods are the cheese sauces put on broccoli and the salad dressings put on veggies. Commercial cheese suces and salad dressings are the processed poisons. Do not get me wrong, cheese and salad dressings can be good but just the ones that are available commercially are the garbage ones with vegetable seed oil’s (canola & soy), emulsifiers, gum thickeners, white flour, MSG, glycerides, natural flavouring, maltodextrin, and chemicals.

@@Chris_Hruska I've read accounts of people who can "smoke one cigarette" occasionally then put it down and be done with it. But they don't trust themselves around a package of oreos. These 'foods' are concocted by the greatest minds in america to generate the greatest loyalty and profit, no matter the cost to the consumer. And every year they make more and more tweaks and changes, iterating and iterating, to make them even more palatable, and generate even higher levels of overconsumption.

@@BrightDecision I struggle with that every day. I can get away from that stuff but as soon as I see it or smell it I just have to have some! its terrible. it really controls your mind in the same ways that hard drugs do id guess. ill get super sad if Im not busy and want some candy. yea this stuff needs to be regulated and fixed for sure!!

Yes, agreed, we need healthier options period. People should know they have been targeted. Warnings need to be on toxic food. Get rid of anything that you cannot read on the ingredients. Frozen foods are the worst.

This news anchor may “like” those things but he obviously doesn’t consume ultra processed foods too often. As a fitness guru, I know that maintaining health and fitness is an everyday commitment. And it doesn’t happen on account.

Everyone attacks corn syrup. I don't think many people understand the effects of it versus sugar. I highly recommend deep diving into the processing, nutritional info, and contents of corn syrup. Things like glucose and the lot are becoming negative in the eyes of many, but I don't think many even understand what they're being told. News loves to tell a fraction of the story. This story didn't explain why these are bad, they even used emulsifiers as a negative. Emulsifiers are ingredients that help things mix. Water can be an emulsifier, but by the view this video pushes, it's a bad word to those who don't dig deeper. To anyone who sees this and is shocked, don't be. It's old news that's been public information for a very long time. It's that the public never looks into it, and purely relies on outlets like this, who spin words and basic information to push fear. Most big words on the backs of food boxes are there for a reason. It's to prevent confusion in an official context. Every single plant, mammal, etc. has names like this. Do ya research folks, a single video like this isn't even 1% of the story. Don't let it be 100% to you.
