In one of the saddest scenes in cinematic history, Elliott (Henry Thomas) & E.T.'s mental connection fades away as E.T. appears to die.
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982): An alien is left behind on Earth and is saved by young Elliot who decides to keep him hidden. While the task force hunts for it, Elliot and his siblings form an emotional bond with their new friend.

I always wondered why Henry Thomas didn't get an Oscar nomination for his work in this film. For this scene, in particular. It would be difficult for ANYONE to effectively pull this off, let alone a child. One wrong note and the entire emotional spell collapses. But damn if he didn't slam it out of the ballpark. Having the right director helps too. Spielberg seems to have a special knack in working with little ones.

I like that moment at 1:23. Throughout the movie, Mike learns how to be the responsible, protective big brother but here he feels powerless to do anything. It's like he's feeling vulnerable like a child so he does what most children do and retreats to the safe place, in this case being the closet.

I cry every time I see Drew Barrymore (Gertie) burst into tears....Steven Spielberg didn't tell Drew what was going to happen in this scene so the tears from Drew are real and genuine. Love it! First movie I ever saw in a theater. Isn't it funny how back in the 80's, if we were to really find an alien, or if ships showed up in the sky, we would have either shot it down, or killed it if it came out of it's ship. But if the same circumstances happened today, we would probably take them in with open arms, and invite them over for dinner. Man times have really changed... But is it for the better? I miss those days, when everyone looked forward to going to the movies with their friends, or on a first date. Unfortunately, now everything is done on their cellphone's so they don't even have to leave their house or talk to each other... Now they just text each other. It used to be you couldn't drive down any neighborhood street without seeing a bunch of kids playing, now it's like a ghost town.

Maybe so on the rose. The story of beauty and the beast is over 4,000 years old and the rose is always a very important part of it. So did ET know that his ship was close and that's why he let Elliot go or did he just let Elliot go expecting to die and let Elliot live. He had to have held on to at least a very tiny amount of life in order to come back, even if it was just say a few cells in his brain while his body and the rest of his brain went I to hibernation. Also, since it's cannon that ET's species came from the Star Wars galaxy because we see them in the galactic senate, ET must have been aware that Elliots Star Wars toys were figures of species in his own galaxy. So I guess it's cannon in the Star Wars universe that all species across the universe, are subconsciously aware of each other, maybe as a result of the force. ET didn't say anything though, so I guess he was aware of this and he just didn't say anything because maybe there's a code sort of like the prime directive in Star Trek where you don't reveal things to species that aren't yet ready to know about it. His entire species is apparently force sensitive to the point that they connected to each other by it and given what we saw him do, they're actually very powerful but you don't see them as Jedis or Siths probably mostly because they have to be close to each other to live but also because they're species are so benevolent that they're a pacifist species and they only use the force to help and heal. I'm guessing that this event took place in future from when the Star Wars series takes place because they have the ability to travel intergalactically at this point so the technology seems more advanced. The Star Wars story unfolds a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

The novel had a lot more to it than the movie did. In the book he sort of has an out of body experience and he is able to locate his ship with the rest of his kind. He then travels back to his body to let Elliott know that they are coming to get him.

In the beginning, Michael was shown to be a snobish and arrogant football playing punk who liked picking on Elliot. In this scene, he is beyond terrified because he believed Elliot and E.T. are going to die when he saw the flowers wilting.
