Remember. Before electric light, the easiest way to get around at night was to wait until the full moon. Hence why certain cultures plant/harvest based on lunar cycle. It's much more pleasant to do field work on a cool, moonlit, night vs on a hot summer afternoon. So we have developed a propensity to be more active during full moons.

I think your right about thinking about before electricity but dont forget we have primarily been a hunting and gathering species (up to 10,000 years of farming on and off for some cultures and 300,000 + years of hunting/foraging as a species. Data is pretty clear that light from a full moon greatly affects hunting (because of light availability/ mating (because of evolutionary fitness associated with syncing) in many other animals.

I had trouble with falling asleep. I solved it by remembering how much I wanted to stay in bed in the morning and I am allowed to be in bed right now and that I literally can enjoy bed time for hours. Realizing that lying in bed awake but horizontal is still resting and better if you were awake for 3 hours and then go to bed. Also thinking bad about not falling asleep increases the pressure on you, making it even harder for you to fall asleep, you need to let go of this.

@@Skukkix23 So, you never had insomnia then. I don't really understand what you were 'suffering' from, but if you could use whatever that was to fall asleep that's not insomnia. I could literally stay awake for over forty-eight hours, often twice a week.....for twenty plus years - only sleeping through utter exhaustion. Now that I'm older I can fall asleep, but this mythical eight hours is a distant dream - I didn't think that I've ever experienced eight hours sleep. Four hours straight sleep is doing well, but more usually it's perhaps two periods of two hours. I'm not suggesting that you didn't possibly have a sleep disorder of some description, but if I could trick my mind to fall asleep like that I'd have done it thirty years ago.

Back in the 1990s, I was a teenager and two of my parents (it's complicated) lived in California, where I visited in the summer. We would occasionally go to a Lyon's Restaurant (now defunct) and my favorite thing there was the root beer float. It was in a tall glass (maybe a sundae glass?) and had whipped cream on top. And sprinkled on top of the whipped cream, they sprinkled mini m&ms.

Regarding point one, I just recently wondered about full-moon related insomnia as my kid woke up at 2AM wanting to play. I have I hypothesis - maybe full moon reflects not only visible light but also shorter wavelenghts such as UV? Maybe the excess of UV radiation during the night (most of our UV comes from the sun, so our bodies read UV - day, no UV - night) somehow messes up the synthesis of melatonin or just breaks our circadian rythm? That is actually a quite an interesting topic :)

In my Nursing career I saw more patients pass away on full moon nights than any other moon formations. Anytime we had someone transfered to palliative care we always asked "is it a full moon", it was not being insensitive, it was to schedule a nurse to sit with the patient on Palliative care 24-7. It was not a wanted situation. But a known statistical occurance.

When we have phones lights indoors and on the streets, its unreasonable to expect that moonlight would still be effective at synchronizing menstruation. If there is a correlation between periods and the full moon, you aren't going to see it by app statistics, you have to study a population that has little to no artificial light, especially at night where the only sources of blue light are the moon and artificial light.

I always think this is an interesting topic to bring up. I know a good number of people who have no belief in unexplained events from things like the moon causing issues all the way to paranormal events. Yet many of them who are in medicine/ems say that while no one can explain it, the oddest and most bizarre shifts they work are on full moons. Most went into their fields initially feeling ‘full moon’ as a cause was myth. Yet they came to find that they do see a correlation. But it always stands out to me when very practical, science-minded professionals admit there’s something that happens during full moons!

I know this comment is quite old but just to ease some potential worries: Clue explicitly asks if they can use your data in studies and if I remember correctly they also ask which data you're ok with them using (I've been using the app for 7 years so it's been a while since I signed up for their studies). The company is based in Germany so they need to follow EU's GDPR no matter where you, the user, may live so they can't even store data without informing you about what's happening to it and getting your consent!

@char1211
@char1211 2 жыл бұрын
@@thatfunkyduck I get why you're wondering! It's pretty difficult to find accessible information about how the EU actually works and laws in general :/ Every member state has its own supervisory authority, SA, to enforce legislation and any company operating within that state has to continuously be able to provide documentation of certain analyses to the SA. Local companies are supervised by their local authority, multinational companies choose one SA as their lead authority and foreign companies must have an EU representative who supervisors can communicate with face-to-face. As a citizen, you can make reports to the SA where you live and companies also have an obligation to notify their SA of any incidents. There are multiple sanctions that can be imposed on a business that controls or processes personal data, one of them being regular audits, but if a company fails to prove that they're following the regulations they can at worst be fined 4% of their worldwide revenue. It's illegal to transfer or store personal information in any way that doesn't comply with EU law as long as one party is based in the EU - be it the one collecting, processing or providing data - so anyone who collects or processes information about an EU citizen for anything other than personal/household use _must_ follow GDPR. Tl;dr Yes, GDPR is being actively enforced and to my knowledge at least there aren't any obvious loopholes to exploit.

@@JRLB38 the research didn't account for the change in sleep patterns and how they effect individuals that are already mentally unstable. I can also confirm EXTREME changes in behavior outside of the expected from working in an alzheimers/dimentia unit, and we expected severe behavioral changes as the norm. This is why when I review any research papers I check for the variables accounted and not accounted for, and for studies on people and their behavior I check for the socioeconomic status of the population researched, as well and the geological regions included in the study to account for regional normative differences. Many people don't realize just how much you have to check for when breaking down a study to check its validity. You also need to check to see if it's peer reviewed, what the control group consisted of and how they performed the study. Randomly checking police logs won't obtain accurate statistics as there are plenty of officers willing to overlook some odd behavior because they believe the full moon has an impact, same with any non-injurious behavior exhibited by mental health facility tennants not being documented. The research team would be required to actually start with fresh data and connect with several medical facilities and police departments to convince them to document every occurence of unusual behaviour to get an accurate assessment of the moons effect on people's behavior and mood, and should account for not just the night of the full moon but the 3 nights before and after. It would also be best to choose varying geographical regions on a longitudinal path to account for the earths orientation to the moon. In short, a robust and comprehensive study would cost more and take longer than researchers are able/willing to contribute on what is already widely considered a myth.

@John Barber Air is a fluid. You're no doubt confusing fluid for liquid, which is not entirely the same. Liquid is one of the three main states of matter that resides between the other two, gases and solids, and is characterised by it having no definite form and being able to hold the shape of any container it fills, but at the same time is relatively incompressable. Whereas a fluid is anything that flows, which includes gases. Liquids can flow. Gases can flow. Ergo, they are both fluids.

@John Barber Man when you see weird statements like "Air is a fluid too," you need to fact-check it before assuming it's stupid. Whenever someone says something as weird as that, very often, it's because they're stating a very obscure fact, not very well known to most people. Therefore, it's better to search it up first just in case, because you could make yourself look like a fool.

The hypothesis about epileptic seizures being more common when it's dark outside should be easy to test by looking at seizure rates in the wintertime versus the summertime in parts of the world close to the polar circle. In Scandinavia for instance, depending on how close to the polar circle you are you get little or no sunlight in the winter, and little or no darkness in the summer. So if the hypothesis is true then epileptic seizures should be more common in the winter in those parts of the world.

Since about 20-25 years ago I have been doing this, quite passively: when several friends or other people mentioned within a timespan of a few days (or a week) that they had their period, I checked the state of the Moon. The vast majority of times the periods of very different women in very different places happened to occur during Full Moon, or not far before that nor far later. I checked this out probably hundreds of times. It's tempting to consider that I was just checking this when there was full Moon. But it's not the case because it happened in the other direction: I had no idea what stage the Moon was at until I checked it up after finding the "strange coincidence" that several friends of mine living in different cities or countries had their period at the same time, or at least in days pretty close to each other. I can't remember any (or almost any) case in which 3 or 4 of them had their period "synchronised" on new Moon of any other point but relatively close to full Moon. So, maybe others buy your "mere coincidence theory". But I don't. The comparison to chimpanzees seems very tempting when I serves us to "prove us right", apparently. Not when it doesn't. Cheers!

I mean I would be interested to test out my own theory here. Hear me out. Hunters do actually do more hunting with moonlight as it makes it easier to see. Since we have evolved along with the moon since always wouldn't it be reasonable to see if there is a correlation between hightened hunting (aka killer) instinct and the moon? The same would hold true for the hunted, with hightened sense of fear. And we as humans have been both hunters as well as prey. Again it would be interesting to see if remnants of this does affect out state of mind durring lunar phases. Or it's all not. Just a theory.

My grandmother didn’t believe in the full moon making people crazy until she started working in a nursing home with people with Alzheimer’s & dementia. After that she believed in it for the rest of her life. My aunt is nurse & works in the maternity ward & she says there is so many more births during the full moon. & my mom is a pharmacy technician & she worked in a hospital for 19 years & saw first hand how much more crazy people got during the full moon. Now she works at a Sam’s Club pharmacy & she says costumers get crazier during the full moon. The stories she has omg 😳 so, sorry, but I whole heartedly believe there is a correlation between the full moon & peoples behavior. I also have 2 other family members (a cousin & uncle) who are nurses so I know so many people that have seen the effects of the full moon on people to not believe it. It’s crazy. Also if people aren’t getting as much sleep as usual, it’s not that surprising that people would act crazier during full moons. Also my other grandmother recently passed away 2 months ago. She had dementia & I just looked up the moon cycles from that time. There was a full moon when she started getting sicker. She had a big scare on Monday November 11th & I know this cause that was exactly 2 weeks before she died. The last time I saw her was actually during a full moon on Tuesday November 12th (I know cause I rushed to see her the next day after the scare) & she was acting very strange to say the least. I know part of it was all the drugs she was on but I’d never seen her act that strange before, even when she was on drugs before. She was saying the strangest things & my uncle was there with me by coincidence (I got out of school the same time he got off work & showed up at the same time) & even he didn’t know wtf she was talking about. I can’t even describe it. It was like she was in this other world where she had been taken hostage?...& tied up?....& held down?... & dragged out?...I have no idea. & she was saying she hadn’t slept it days (she’d been asleep all day the day before because of the scare so the hospice nurses gave her a bunch of morphine to knock her out so they could work on trying to save her) & she did NOT want to eat, she was adamant on going to bed (it was like 4:30pm) to the point she was starting to get angry (her familiar angry voice that I hadn’t heard since before the dementia was coming out). Now I’d heard her say “i haven’t slept in days” before & knew it wasnt true cause usually all she did during my visits was sleep. But I’d never seen her so adamant about going to bed RIGHT NOW & refusing to eat like that & about to throw a fit (my uncle & I left before it got ugly 😬) It was scary & so sad to for me & my uncle to see. My uncle & I just kept looking at each other like “what is happening???” & I hadn’t seen her that talkative in years. Usually all she did was sleep. She actually passed away on Monday November 25th & Tuesday November 26th was a new moon so 👀 idk it’s all so strange.
