Mark, I am delighted you made this video as I have almost every scope I have mounted on my rifles at 2-inches high on more. Some of my rifles I used a Kick-eze pad mount, I've modified, intended for shotguns. This has allowed me to raise the pivot point you alluded to in this video. I did this originally on a McMillan stock remodel I used to shoot 3543 yards ( little bit over 2 miles) with my 300RUM, Remington 700 SS LA blueprinted with a 30" Lothar Walther SS barrel, Wyatts Box, Jewel trigger and Fat Bastard muzzle brake.

Thank you for putting this video up. The low mount philosophy is also how most people would answer you here in Denmark. But I see now that it is an old school way of looking at it, and it is almost always hunters that would pass on that particular advice. Thank you for clearing this up. I will go and check all my rifles now - hunting and precision rifles. Always a pleasure to see you shoot with the MDT setup. Having a Tikka T3 in 30-06 mounted in a MDT ESS chassis I feel I can relate. Big thumbs up 👍

Good video! I started life as a culler in the New Zealand Forest Service in 1963. We only had open sights for all hunting, bush or mountain. We were issued with sporterised .303's then. When I bought my own rifle, a Sako .270, i used it for some time without a scope. My first scope was a Nikko 4x40. The choice of scopes wasn't great back then and they were horrendously expensive in NZ too . I mounted it low because of what you said, a direct hangover from open sights. These days in my 70's I use a Carl Gustaf .270 with a Swarovski scope and the height is closer to what you have shown here, probably because I used the same thoughts you mentioned. Glad I found your channel, subscribed. Cheers mate.....

That's got to be the best video I've seen explaining positioning your rifle and scope to suit you, the shooter. Just about every other video only looks at eye relief. I'm definitely going to try higher rings, I'm canting my head over to get in the correct position. Just one of those challenges with having a box head.

Good vid yet again. Debunking the myth of “lower is better” in plain English without jamming opinions down the viewers’ necks. I have been of a similar opinion on this matter for some time, and I’m slowly (and I do mean SLOWLY) getting my Father, who is 86 and still comes shooting with me, to fall in with this way of thinking. And, yes, the Cyclops is definitely worth a look.

Mark, once again IMHO you are spot on. Being relatively new to rifles and long range, I began by following the conventional "mount it low" using Seekings Precision .87 "medium" height rings. (Just high enough for the objective bell to clear the barrel.) In addition to what you mentioned, I found that when getting into the proper eye box position, I was applying a torque to the stock with my cheek which would throw the rifle off of level. Then, I would fight to get it back to level by applying a counter torque. Experimenting this off-season, I have found that raising the scope by switching from medium to high (.97") or extra high (1.26") rings correct the specific torquing issue and result in a much more relaxed shooting position. Once it warms up, I will shoot with both to see which works the best. It will not surprise me to be rifle specific.

Thank you, I just got my rifle out of my gun safe, even with medium scope rings my scope is fine, my scope has a 56mm objective lens, low rings the rim of the scope would have been just a few millimeters above the barrel if not touching it so I'm glad you cleared that up. Just waiting on my MDT XRS chassis system MDT magazine's to arrive so I can finally get my rifle back on the range. My Savage 10 proprietary magazine is hopeless, but I didn't want to waste money on a new magazine so I thought change out the chassis and use MDT or AICS magazines, better for Sniper competition (SRA Finland) and hunting.

This makes a lot of sense. I have always strived to get my scope as low as possible, did not really know the reason why. I just heard the usual stuff. Thought it was related to lessening the effects of canting the rifle. I`m now getting a second hand Tikka A1 Tac chassis for my T3 supervarmint .260 rem, and I will set it up with the end of the stock making more contact with shoulder and making my prone position more natural\less cramped style like you suggest. I have only shot a heavy .223 in a heavy MDT Tac21 chassis so much focus on recoil managment has not been so critcal.

As a late in life ‘newby’ to this, I wish I’d known this before buying my guns. The shops basically just sell the guns with some technical advice, noting they are dealing with passion, emotion and desire over logic. Although a complex science, time spent investigating the biomechanics and fit would be superb - curtailing a lot of potential issues and facilitating a better outcome. Great advice based on huge experience and ability. Thanks so much.

Great video. Can placement of the coventional buttstock in the bench rest position be achieved as you've shown in the standing postion.. the magpul stocks with the adjustable cheek rest work at bench rest. Some of my CZ have the euro stocks with more combined drop than the stock in video. I like how you have ruptured the myth of always needing low rings. Around here it's difficult to find low rings medium or high seem to be stocked abundantly. As a child in the 1950s folks would used the add on leather cheek pieces usually laced in place. Those don't seem to be offered much anymore. As a kid 9 outa 10 hunting rifles had those add on leather cheek pieces. Good video mate! 🤔

I generally prefer a higher scope mount as well. The one potential negative that you need to be aware of is that the higher your scope, the more important you leveling the rifle will be - especially at longer ranges. A higher scope that is canted on a rifle will give a greater horizontal impact on the target if not properly leveled. Just something to keep in mind.
@markandsamafterwork
@markandsamafterwork 3 жыл бұрын
Well not really, another of those things folks are taught, but reality is, it is very, very important to level rifle for long ranges, but not influenced by how high the scope, but glad you liked, Cheers

I'm not as eloquent about it as you but I have a 10/22 with a very high scope on it. It's so much more comfortable and so far I'm regularly hitting a 6 inch plate at 325 yards. That said there ain't no way around physics. On bigger calibers how you are positioned to take the recoil matters. Great video.

The scope on my 10/22 is as low as I could get it. Honestly I did it for aesthetic reasons and I’m used to it now so it’s not an issue for me. I might get some taller rings just to see if my accuracy changes.

Have a old model Sabatti rifle. They updated their bolt to throw the brass out to the side. Need to keep the scope up enough on my older model so that the brass doesn’t bounce off the turret. Some times bouncing right back into the action. Had the same problem with a Remington 788 bolt action.

I used to have a 22 with open rings so you could use the iron sights if needed at close range. That would be the only reason I would mount the scope any higher than you have to.

Sounds like a axe sharpening dilemma and I like my double bit axe beveled on just one side, the same one both edges in order that it chips away right or left with a quick twist and as sharp as possible because it’s not for splitting firewood.

Mark my buddies love to make fun of how I always use like a chin and jaw weld on my rifles instead of the cheek weld but I've been so used to shooting Ak's with optics that I find it to be a more comfortable feel shooting precision rifles that I'm not bending my head down to look through the glass.👍

Comfortable is common sense. I run a BLR Tracker in .308 with 18.5 in barrel set up for a standing rest shot i.e hunting and taking a shot with a natural rest like a tree branch or free standing and my chin not my cheek rests on the stock. I have to resist the temptation to move the scope when shooting from the bench whilst trying new ammo because it will mess up my hunting setup. My eye relief is different whilst seated. Maybe because i think too much about the shot and move around too much. But practising shouldering the rifle has allowed me to find the most comfortable and therefore accurate position for my scope. And yeah i do get comments from other shooters at the range of how high my scope is mounted. But when i am on walk a fast acquisition and shot is paramount.

I understand when you talk about a standard muzzle break only works to reduce recoil. Would it be an idea to make the ports that are to the sides and angled backwards, to make those ports in a compound angle where they are not only angled backwards but also slightly 10° or so upwards. This should give a slight downwards force.

My general thoughts in my 60 years of life, have always leaned towards your thoughts and explanations for this subject, however; I have rarely voiced my opinion. when high master shooters say it needs to be this way, who am I to argue. I have had injuries to my neck when I was younger that make it difficult if not impossible to use low profile anything, including a bipod. The only negative I have found with higher mounting, is for shots farther than 600yds I really need a level to reference. My natural ability to sense straight up and down ( plumb) isn't what it used to be. I can still for the most part at 600yds stay well within the 3/4 moa of the rifles ability and call pretty much everything outside that. The only trouble with that is, only trigger time will get the bad shots back in line. Just because you can call your shots doesn't mean you can shoot worth a darn ( without trigger time). If I could make all the shots I can see in pool, I would be a pool shark . Thank you for all your helpful advice and videos.

When setting a scope on my rifle - the first thing I look for is that it's comfortable, and in a position that I can be consistent. I never really bothered about height except on my air rifles which I shoot 50m or less. Someone challenged me on scope height - he told me that it will limit my vertical adjustment if set too high. I do not think he is right, as it's the ANGLE of the scope viz the rifle that affects the vertical adjustments. Do you think so?

Do you think scope height has any correlation to mirage? I usually mount my scopes on the high side and have never really felt hindered by mirage. I went with talley lows on my new 300wm and notice mirage now after 2 or 3 shots. It has me thinking about tossing a set of highs on there. My scope sits about a quarter inch off of my barrel with the lows. The temperature has also been in the 20s (F) when I've been out with it.

I am new to the channel, so if this question is answered in another video, please direct me there. In one video I believe you mentioned 21 MOA drop. How do you achieve that inside the scope (not sure of the term I should use here). Does your scope have 21 MOA adjustment or do you lift (shim) the rear scope mount, or use adjustable rings or use another technique? I mostly shoot air rifle and just purchased a new air rifle with 20 MOA built into the scope rail, and have older models with adjustable rings. Just wondering about other techniques that work.

When people say it has to low the lower the better to be accurate and with high power. I quickly point out that the snipers in ww2 didnt have problems especially the Fins, Russians, Germans with 3x 4x scopes no real set scope power and extremely deadly.
