I think Brienne is living an authentic life. She is true to herself. Imagine if she had bowed to society and was just a brood mare for some guy who only wanted to be Lord in Tarth. That would be a tragic life.

The different areas are ruled by Great Lords. Warden's are not rulers, they are military titles, tasked with acting as the king's general in a specific region (North, South, East, West) with the power to mobilize and command any forces within their area of responsibility.

I still believe it's most sensible to say that the events of ASOIAF/GOT are put in motion primarily by the murder of Jon Arryn
@vitormelomedeiros

I'm not quite sure. It doesn't really fit with Daenerys' story, and there are some other plot points later on which are relatively independent. This would also mean Littlefinger's responsible for setting the story in motion, which is giving the man too much credit. I think we gotta say Robert's Rebellion is the single event which set the story in motion.
@amcd85
@amcd85 3 жыл бұрын
Another channel theorized that Littlefinger was the one who told Brandon Stark that Lyanna was kidnapped by Rhaegar in order to get back at him for Catelyn and get him killed so he would have started Roberts Rebellion as well and still be the catalyst for it all. If anything, LF is a testament to all that lies can do and the power that can be held by those who exploit them for their own gains.

I have so much respect for people that got drafted to fight in Vietnam but found a way out. Takes more courage to fight the system than just doing what you're told. George RR Martin is an author; an academic, he's a good and brave man for standing by his principles!

I find your view on the opposite magical forces countering each other very interesting! I'm not so sure it started with the birth of the dragons thought. George has said himself that the changing of seasons is due to magic. It just so happens that the story begins at the end of a very long summer (when the others are seen again for the first time in ages). The seasons are mentioned quite alot through out the books and the last couple of winters are said to have been breef. Seems to me there's some sort of imbalance there... In the beginning of the first book they mention a couple of times that the wall is "weeping" meaning slowly melting (before the birth of any dragon as far as we know). What if the wall itself is not there to protect the world of men but to separate the the world of men from The Land Of Always Winter and by doing so, ensuring both sides stay habitable for two species who otherwise couldn't coexist. Maybe that's the deal that was made. We get a pretty good idea of how the precense of the others affect humans (the ones that are not slaughtered basically freeze or starve) but how do the precense of humans affect the others? Maybe their only purpose going south is to stop the event of an ever lasting summer. Any thoughts?

I wonder are the Others more like the Banshee in Irish myth. The banshee (Bean Sidhe) are spirit women who warn people of death with a scream or wail that’s described as horrible and ear piercing. They banshee warns of the deaths of great (or noble) Irish houses and each house has their own banshee. it’s said that if you stand in her way of carrying out her scream she will kill you. I wonder if we’ll find out that the Others are trying to warn of death (or something else) and that the Nights Watch brothers and Wildlings are standing in their way, so they are killing them. Pure tinfoil hat theory, was pondering over it when I was going to bed one night 🤷🏻‍♀️

A few notes regarding Briennes chapters (23:00). Her chapters juxtaposed to Tyrions made me grow very fond of her character while despising Tyrion more and more with every chapter. She is a very strong (mentally and physically) character while Tyrion drowns in self-pity about his looks and his only ever solution to anything seems to be to murder somebody. When you reread his chapters you will notice that often times the first thing Tyrion thinks when he regrets something is:"I should have murdered XYZ while i could". He is such a terrible person, even more so when compared to Brienne

Two videos in one day, you are a gift. You're theory on the fact that this is magic's last leg reminds me of the idea that terminally ill patients get a surge of strength. They get marginally better or even back to near perfect health and then they pass. But I don't know if magic could completely disappear from this world but they have definitely been pushed deep underground.

If you haven't found his stuff before it's a bit late in the game although we still have a final book to look forward to... but Preston Jacobs was one of my favorite asoiaf content creators years back and has a fun series on the old gods titled The Minds of Wolves and Robins which has a ton of value in what it covers about some of georges old scifi writing and how it pertains to his writing of the old gods. If you get into that then especially worth it to go back and read his short story anthology - I did it on audio lol! anyway thanks again quinn I've really been enjoying your work and it's getting me hyped for winds of winter like I haven't been in years

Bit of a correction: "Warden" isn't actually a title denoting the *ruler* of a particular realm. It isn't inheritable either: King Robert talks about granting "Warden of the East" to Jaime Lannister following Jon Arryn's death, saying "I would be mad to rest one quarter of the realm on the shoulders of a sickly child." The feudal hierarchy in ASOIAF is a bit fuzzy in this way, and there aren't clear titles distinguishing minor lords from major ones. The closest is "Lord Paramount," but only three of these (Lords Paramount of the Reach, Stormlands, and Trident) are named, and there is no Lord Paramount of the Vale, North, or Westerlands. Mace Tyrell is both Lord Paramount of the Reach *AND* Warden of the South.

Rhaegar (& by extension Jon Snow to an extent) seems personality wise like he could have turned out to be more like Henry V. Yes, Henry V was in the generation before the Wars of the Roses, but both played the harp, neither were overly emotional, both were dutiful to what they perceived to be their current & future responsibilities as Crown Prince & King, each had a talent for cultivating favor commoner & noble favor, each showed military talent, both had complex relationships with their fathers to the point that they had their own agendas on how they'd reign even before ascending the throne, & each are romanticized after their death when their realms descend into conflict.

I would say Edward the 4th, strayed from his marriage (Rhaegar tossing Elia Aside for Lyanna - jane shore the mistress of Edward the 4th) married a woman for love against others wishes and advice which would create war and conflict (Elizabeth vs the kingmaker - Lyanna vs the north) who's sons would die horrible deaths (vanishing princes in the tower - Rhaegar and Elia's children via Mountain) and the child they would conceive (Elizabeth jr their daughter - jon Snow) would go on to marry the conqueror from across the water who has a flimsy claim from the previous royal family, who's mother suffered greatly to bring into the world, was whisked away and raised by a relative in a foreign land, trained to take back their throne and and start a new dynasty together once they succeeded (Henry tudor - Daenery's most likely) against a ruler who was not actually next in line unless of the death of two boys (richard the 3rd, mysterious vanishing of the princes in the tower - Cersei, her two boys Joffrey and Tommen who in the series jumped from a tower)

No, just... None of those characters are molded by the idea of a single person. George RR Martin does not do that, he's said it himself. They're more likely to be amalgamations of several real historical figures with a touch of the author's own imagination. Keep that in mind.

This is so beautiful.... Thank you for this video.... It really sums up the A Song of Ice and Fire... I believe, unlike most, that Daenerys and Bran are the opposite sides, Fire and Ice... Daenerys gets dreams surely from Quathe like how Bran gets dreams surely from Bloodraven... Both of them met their higher being... Both of their higher beings tell them what they should pursue... Daenerys must return to her Targaryen roots, and Bran must accept and develop his Warging abilities... Both of these are significant...making them decent into darkness they would not pursue otherwise... Daenerys is Fire🔥and Bran is Ice ❄ That is how I feel, at least... I would prefer it this way... I am not a fan of Jon Snow being Ice...

the Reed pledge is one of my favorites too! If I ever wrote a letter to george I would sign it with that. it is clearly an ancient oath long wrapped up in the history of the first men and the old gods and a long standing relation mediated by the old gods for some "divine purpose" between house Reed and Stark. Certainly, the Reeds maybe alongside the Blackwoods are the houses which grant us the biggest insights into the workings of the old gods besides House Stark. Howland Reed is one of georges favorite characters ever and has been said to be one of the most important in the plot of the book....he hasn't even been in the books yet besides a dream! I think we still have so much to learn! "You know nothing Jon Snow"

LOL!! I read the mists of avalon as a freshman in high school, when my freshman english teacher recommended it to me and loaned me her own copy!! I loved it then ( I had just finished the once and future king) and I still use it to illustrate how different the story can look when you are given a story from the viewpoint of the antagonist. We have no narrative whatsoever for the Night King's side of things in this story, so it's hard for me to regard him as "pure evil". We have no idea what motivates him, so maybe it's not the right thing to label him as malevolent or malicious. In stpehen king's "it", the monster is regarded as evil, and it truly appears to be. I mean, it feeds on the fear of children! But if you read the story, it is not evil. It's from a different dimension. It's a being of light. Here, in our dimension, it's trapped in a meatsack, more or less (just like us). The closest thing it can find to it's food source (if it even needs nourishment in it's own dimension) is children's fear. Good, evil - these terms really just do not apply to it. it just is what it is. it does not have evil intent, it only wants to survive when it finds itself trapped in a deeply foreign place. I try to think of the Night King in the same kind of terms... Maybe we'll get some real answers to these kinds of questions in the prequel, because i think it's outside the scope of our current series. :D

Magic in The Lord of the Rings did not decrease. This is a common misconception that many hold of Tolkien's legendarium. Anyone can wield magic, if they have the lore to do so. Some magic is more powerful than others since its wielded by more powerful beings (Maiar, etc), but magic didn't fade. The lore necessary for the sub-creative process was lost to Men. That is a significant difference.

Interesting you mentioned Mists of Avalon. Marion Zimmer Bradley was very much a feminist writer & tackled a few ancient myths via the female perspective. I enjoyed Mists but my favorite was Firebrand. A retelling of the Troy legend through the perspective of Cassandra, gifted with the sight but cursed that nobody would heed her warnings. In Mists, I liked how Merlin wasn't a person but a title- The Merlin, within the wiccin/druidic order. It was a well crafted story & another example where an author left in magical influence but it was subtle. Nice comparison, not one I would have made readily. 👍

There's a book by Nivin(sp*) that was old when I read it when I found it in a used book store when I was 14 but I fell in love with it immediately. I may still have a copy idk, I have si many now. Anyway, the book is called The Magic Goes Away. It always stayed with me probably because I wabted to save the magic as much as thise on the quest. It's beautifully written and sadly enough takes place on Earth but the journey they under take is no less epic as you follow them around the world and even into the clouds. If you can find an old copy, read it. You won't regret it. To me it became a kind of obsession. No single book grabbed me like that. Seireses of course! Anyone who's read Peirs Anthony would know that long before ASoIaF or read Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy in it's oddly named trilogy😉. Some books you read over and over. They're apart of tou. This was 1 such book for me.

I recently discovered your channel after season 8 aired, it's disappointing conclusion launched me into the books (in ACOK currently) and I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your analysis of the characters and lore. I wanted to ask you something, there's a chapter in AGOT where Sansa is remembering a time before the story takes place when she and some of the Stark children go down to the crypts only for them to be ambushed by Jon and Robb as they pretend to be the Others climbing out of the empty tombs. I wanted to ask you if you thought this was a possibility of foreshadowing the crypt scene in season 8 (my assumption being that D&D just executed it badly). What made me think this is that it's in the pov of Sansa, and she's the one who's frightened the most by Robb and Jon, and in the show, she's the only Stark child in the crypts.

Not that it's a big deal but Arya is 9 in AGOTs and 11 in ADWD, because Jon and Robb are only 14 at the start of AGOTs before turning 15 later in the book. While Sansa is 11-13, Bran is 7-9, and Rickon is 3-5 between AGOTs and Dance

Have you read the Dandelion Dynasty by Ken Liu. There are currently two books in the series, The Grace of Kings and The Wall of Storms, with a third on the way in the future. Should you ever bore of either ASOIAF or Dune, this series will have plenty for you to sink your teeth into.

I have my own take on the magic explosion theory instead of magic going out all together it goes into cycles where for the most part theres not much of it but its starts to get larger at points what were reading is so far the third cycle the first being the war between the First Men and the Children and the second being the Long Night

That's cool how you mentioned as a kid GRRM would watch the ships and make up stories about where they had been and where they would go and that's what Sansa did w Shea at the docks of the Red Keep! He looked in his own past realized that was an escape he had used as a child.

Such a chilling notion isn't it. Not knowing how much our own history is the truth and how much of it is lies. As much as we don't like to think history IS written by victors and the powerless people and weak nations suffer. Look at Vietnam Iraq Afganistan and to lesser extent Cuba Turkey(Real name is Türkiye). And while I fucking love ASOIAF I hate the trope of magic dissappearing from the world. I hope there will still be magic.

Growing up in an environment full of religious fanatics made me hate Melisandre most of all the characters. More than all the others who made horrible things. As you said, Melisandre is DANGEROUS. I think people who like her think she's a regular witch but she is definitely not. Martin captures so well how religious fanatics are and how they work that she made me feel scared by all people she would encounter.

GRRM isn't anti-war. As he said he was against the Vietnam war because he didn't believe in it, he does not think all war is pointless. He has said he would have signed up to fight the nazi's. Also the fact that Quinn is a journalism major explains so much.

You really should read the analysis I've posted about the WW and the ancient history of Westeros on my facebook wall. I've talked with Val about them and she can tell you. I also wrote one on the meaning of Ice and Fire. In fact, check them all out. I know I got all my predictions on season 7 wrong, but I still think I version was better than the real one. As far as WOW is concerned, Martin has lied before, so I'm not sure if his denials are as final as he makes them. It would be entirely in character for him to insist its not coming out until the very day it is announced.
