On November 20, 1973, the Who were opening their Quadrophenia US concert tour at the Cow Palace in Daly City, a suburb just south of San Francisco. Halpin had recently moved to the area and was there with a friend, Mike Danese, using tickets they had bought from a stranger. As big fans of the band, they arrived at the show long before the doors opened to get good seats.
The Who opened the show with three of their earlier hits before launching into material from Quadrophenia, playing eleven of the album's 17 songs and then continuing on to other hits. About 70 minutes into the show, drummer Keith Moon, a heavy user of drugs and alcohol, began to falter during "Won't Get Fooled Again", then suddenly slumped over his drum kit, and was helped off by roadies while the others members of the band finished the song as best they could without him. Backstage, Moon was placed in a cold shower by the roadies in an attempt to revive him. Their efforts worked, and an injection of cortisone got him back onstage after an approximately 30-minute delay.
Moon having returned, the show continued with "Magic Bus". The percussion of the song's opening verses consisted only of Moon hitting two wooden blocks against one another. However, at the song's conclusion, Moon passed out again, slumping onto his drums. He was carried off again-this time not to return. Guitarist Pete Townshend later said in an interview that Moon had consumed ketamine pills, together with a large volume of brandy.
The remaining three band members then played a short jam, before going into "See Me, Feel Me", without drums, with vocalist Roger Daltrey adding a tambourine for percussion. The song received a huge response, and Pete Townshend apologized to the crowd and thanked them for putting up with a three-quarter-strength band, saying "I think it should be us applauding you". Townshend then asked the crowd, "Can anybody play the drums?" He repeated the question, adding, "I need somebody really good!"
At this time, Halpin and Danese were at the left edge of the stage, and Danese told the security staff, "He can play!" In truth, Halpin was lacking practice and had not played drums in a year, but Danese attracted the attention of the concert's promoter, Bill Graham.
Part of the footage was from The Who's ''Quadrophenia Can You See The Real Me?'' documentary 2012. The rest is from the concert.

The Short of the same name went ballistic so it inspired me to have a go at a longer version as some didn’t know what it was about. I thought with the extra subs it might get a few hundred at best over some time. I never imagined it too would go crazy. A couple of people wanted Scots full performance so here it is. I have tried to use best available video and sync the best audio to it. Cheers David 👍

One of the greatest and wackiest moments in all of Rock n Roll history. Scott was my cousin and I was there that night with him. We recently lost him. The band did send him a check for $1,000 afterwards. They told him he saved the show and he really did.

My kid sister and late older brother were both at this concert. My sister told me after that it was so loud in the Palace that you couldn't really hear the drums as an instrument! She said the music was like thunder, which made it hard to discern any particular instrument! But she also said that the stand-in for Keith did a good job!

I’ve seen the first 1-2 minutes on the “30 Years Max RnB” history of the band ( up to at least the mid 90s I believe ) DVD - I didn’t know these extra features were out there. All I know is if I was Scott, I’d be sitting there on Keith’s kit.. - not believing that they saw me raise my hand to begin with- as Pete asked for a “good drummer” never mind trying to show Pete I can do as well as the times I’ve made believe I was Keith at home. Now what ?? Lol - Those guys at work/school will never believe this ! ( no KZfaq back in 1973!) I wonder if they had a way to take a group shot and mail to him to show friends. Or did Pete share his brandy!

Very interesting and risky choice by Pete and the other two. Kinda like, “Keith, this train isn’t stopping and you better get your act together or face replacement.” Just imagine if this were Zeppelin and Bonzo drank too much and collapsed and couldn’t finish the show. NO WAY would Page replace him with an audience member who would sit and play Bonzo’s prized drum-kit. No way. That would have ended Zep, Bonzo would gave quit the band, taking it as an absolute and unforgivable act to do something like that and Plant would never have gone along with such an idea, either. But, The Who ain’t no Zep, as we saw later when Keith passed and was replaced. Same with Entwistle. Different level of music and musicians. No member of Zep was replaceable. Even though Jason Bonham did an admirable job at the O2, to my ears he played a copy, and a heavy-handed copy at that. The spark, creativity, and yes lightness of Bonzo’s playing has never been duplicated.

As a retired musician, lead guitarist, who once had the chance to perform onstage, I can safely say the drummer's post is one of the most difficult. Along with the bass, the drummer sets the foundation of a song, kind of giving signals to the rest of the group where in the song the band already is at certain points in time, and sets most of the accents. Here, a guest musician without proper rehearsal, stands in for a big-name band and its drummer. And beats through to the finish. How difficult can things get for him?
@SteviesVinylCupboard
@SteviesVinylCupboard 28 күн бұрын
He did a fantastic job considering. Especially as Moon would play lead drums at time and always switching from syncing with John or Pete. If you look at the IoW 1970 concert its fascinating how Moon constantly looks over to John and Pete switching to and fro supporting, filling, leading all the time. I have a short that's done very well 'Keith plays along with the vocals' which shows how gifted he was in the studio. For Scott to even get through Naked Eye, with its changing tempos, would take any drummer alot pr practice to get up to speed, it shows the guy had alot of heart. Thanks for stopping by cheers 👍

Townshend wanted to a times, I’m sure this was one of them. He said he played steady rhythm on guitar because somebody had to. Moon’s constant rolling and crashing was/is attractive to the average listener but to play with it is not always what you want as a musician, even if it’s not late or out of time. Most of the time you want a steady beat that forms a foundation with a solid footing. You never want to have to count beats in your head because the drummer is tommy rolling and crashing all over the place. But I have to admit Moon has always been one of my all time favorite rock drummers to listen to. 🥁
