Scott Ian, the iconic guitar player of the band Anthrax, uses the EVH el34 100. Let's see how his settings differ from mine. The evh el34 is such a brutal amp. I boost mine with the mud killer, Scott doesn't use a boost. This should be interesting! I will play some riffs from two Anthrax songs, Among The Living & Madhouse.

I was wondering if you intended to keep that in there or not. I know how it feels when that happens. The worst is when it happens during a presentation or giving a talk. Had that happen to me many times during a presentation, and you can imagine the stress when I can’t stop and have to just keep going.

Jarrod, I think a knob settings series would be cool. Maybe even a challenge section where you must set one control all the way up or down. In a way it’s like painting the amp into a corner; how the rest of the tone controls are set to compensate would be interesting to see.

I really like the sound of this amp. It delivers the heavy tones we all like. A lot of pro players use these amps. As far as the comparison goes... both settings sound great to me. I tend to dial-in my sound like you do. But I liked Scott's settings too. I also like a overdrive pedal in front of the amp. Nice job on the video! Funny bloopers at the end! I can't deliver dialogue in 1-take either! That's the magic of editing, you can make several tries, and keep the best one.

Thanks for commenting and again thank you very much for pointing out my mistake. I'm so glad I had a chance to make it right. I like to both settings as well. I just really prefer the feel of the amplifier when I boost it. Is just more responsive to my type of playing. And yes, the struggle is real just trying to talk on camera sometimes. I have no problem with it live but as soon as I'm doing a recorded video, I can't spit my words out correctly.. It's so weird. I even tried to pretend I'm live and I just can't do it sometimes. Hopefully someday I can fix that... that's the hardest part about editing my videos. Finding the best take is always so tedious and excruciating for me

When the high control is up the mid dip frequency shifts a bit down, resulting in an increased high mids focus. The overdrive pedal really makes the amp have the under the fingers feel. You like to get that high mid aggression in the pedal and then cut back the mids a bit. I tend to play the drier ‘Scott’s settings’; I like to crank the treble/high controls on amps. Glad you redid the episode, cool to see knob turning. Exotic knob settings can be surprising.

Around the 12:40-ish: As you break into Scott's setting on ATL, I hear more finger noise and pick scrape. These are exactly elements I get from my sound and it's all about that treble! Like Steve Vai on the Eat 'Em and Smile album (David Lee Roth) lot's of extraneous noises around the notes always turned me on. Flesh ripping transients between chords.

I don't know if Scott Ian still uses his custom pick-ups (El Diablo) from Seymour Duncan, but they are a really high output pick-up....probably one of the hottest pick-ups out there so factor that in with how he dials in his settings...especially his gain.

It's noteworthy that the trend so far is artist settings tend to be more forward and bright than the JG spec. Not to say one is better than the other, I just feel it will be interesting to see if this becomes a pattern. When you have to fight other top level musicians for space in the sonic landscape the extra forwardness might be a necessity.

I always enjoy your comments very much. You make a lot of great points. You are absolutely correct. I'm learning a lot from doing these videos and I'll probably apply some of these things to my own settings on all of my amplifiers. These artists work with the best sound engineers on stage and in the studio. I'm sure they are learning a lot from them and applying what they've learned to their rigs. And now we get to pass that information down to ourselves. I'm lucky, I get to learn all of this information and their awesome riffs as well. This is a lot of fun to do

So as an extreme metal guitarist and audio engineer the super fat tone just isn't going to sound heavy. It's just a big fluffy butt of a tone and doesn't cut through or have attack and impact. Scott Ian demonstrates his understanding of that concept with his settings.
