Coming out of high school, Jacob Eason was a five star recruit and the QB savior of Georgia football. He had highs and lows his freshman year, but then he got screwed and had to transfer back home to Washington. After an up and down season, he would leave for the NFL and while it looked like he was being put into a good situation, he ultimately became a QB bust, so what happened? Today, we will talk about the rise & fall of Jacob Eason and tell his story, enjoy!

Do a video on why Colorado is hard to win at. Maybe I’m biased, but It seems like it’s a dream school for athletes. Great college town, right next to Denver. Campus is beautiful, academics are pretty decent, and plenty of cool outdoor things to do as well. Seems like it should be a dream destination for recruits. Why not?

I lived in Lake Stevens while he was finishing up high school and his time at UGA. To me I don’t think he really understood the environment/pressure that came with going to play in the SEC and Georgia. I spoke to his mother once who worked at my kids elementary school about her experience of going to a game while he was at UGA and I could tell that she didn’t get how serious SEC fans take football. I knew then that he was not the QB to take Georgia to the next level. I continued to follow him at UW and in the NFL, I just never saw the passion to be great.

Jacob's Dad is Tony Eason. He did play at Notre Dame, he was a wide receiver. However, the Tony Eason you show as his father at 1:10 as QB for the Patriots (the QB when the team was dismantled by the '85 Bears and the Refrigerator) is not the same Tony Eason and is not Jacob's father. It's confusing to be sure.

Odds are strong the Patriots Eason gets assumed. It’s been much more egregious. Nice breakdown. I watched Eason play in high school often. And as a Colts fan I was very excited that got him. Eason has all the skills you would want. He just seems hesitant on throwing the ball. Not sure if he is processing slowly or what. Missing those years did slow him down. He certain is worth someone trying to develop.

Kirby Smart needed to win that title. Mack Brown won a title and played for another at Texas, but he kept missing on star QBs. RGIII and Manziel were recruited as DBs. @BarnardsATL

Why do you think leaving high school early hurt him? The high school football season was over when he enrolled early at Georgia, which gave him a head start on his college football career as he could participate in Spring practices and be learning the system. That is a huge advantage vs enrolling in the Fall. That said, maybe he would have been better served to play another year in college at UW, although he almost might have gotten injured again. Impossible to know.

If one explores the PNW High School QBs who were 5 Star guys, well, they were all kind of "busts". Eason is certainly one of those, but Max Browne and Jake Heaps, both from Skyline HS, were kind of that way too. Heaps won 3 straight state titles, went to BYU, but then lost the starting job and ended up at Kansas and then Miami, never really putting it together. Max Browne went to USC and was even the starter at one point, but would eventually lose that job too. I do have to say that Browne was a total team player. He never transferred, he got his degree and that was fine for him. I think the biggest problem for PNW QBs is that they go to college as completely finished projects, having had QB "gurus" like Tracey Ford work with them since they were Freshman and going to Nike Elite 11 camps in Eugene. They are already at their peak. Other schools get raw talent and continue to develop these kids past where the PNW QBs start. The best QB from the PNW in recent times was actually the unheralded Kellen Moore, who ended up as the all-time wining QB in College Football at Boise State. Or Lincoln Victor, who won the State Title at Union in 2018, but switched to being a wide receiver and is helping WSU to a great season this year. A lot of folks are big on Joshua Wood from Graham-Kapowsin last year, I look forward to seeing what he can do at the next level. He led G-K to that huge last second victory over the Georgia 7A State Champ in the HS bowl game in Las Vegas last year. Currently, Lincoln HS (Tacoma) QB Gabarri Johnson is set to be "the next big thing" from the PNW. He has committed to Mizzou.

@@ScottFisherCFB I completely forgot about Sam Huard! That's another one. Actually, if one wants to trace the genesis of the PNW Gatorade Player of the Year QBs starting to be complete busts, I think Sam's uncle, Luke Huard, is probably the first one I can think of.

Ur pretty on point overall. Only things I'd add are 1. Browne did transfer (after graduating like u said) n looked good in his last game at Pitt before getting hurt again 2. Justin Herbert is from Eugene which is 100% part of the PNW, but he was only 3 star n a last minute backup plan for the dux so not finished product like ur talkin about 3. Tracy Ford is shady but he's not known as a qb guru around here, he's more of the all around athletic performance kinda guy, Taylor Barton is prolly the most well known qb specific guy in the PNW

I am a huge University of Washington fan. I remember Jacob Eason taking the helm from Jake Browning. Browning was smart and was accurate but never had the big arm. Eason had an amazing arm, but wasn't smart. He seemed to run into sacks instead of avoiding. He had all the potential in the world but never seemed to know how to fulfill it. He's been given the opportunities at the professional level. I think the opportunities have run out.

I think Eason lacks in leadership abilities......Kirby Smart said one time, "Jacob is trying to lead". Strong leadership in the huddle translates to players seeing a chance and believing they can win and that can transform players. When Jake Fromm was put in, everything changed. The players responded to Fromm, Kirby said, "Jake get's it". Jake was a smarter QB, and the players saw that or sensed it and he became QB1.

Maybe your video is the opposite of a curse since he just got another chance to play this last Sunday due to injuries across the depth chart. 3-5 for 59 yards and one interception in a lost cause game 24-10 against a top defender in the LA Rams. I've always believed at least 70% of being a successful NFL QB was between the ears and the ability to make quality split second decisions when under pressure from an NFL defensive pass rush. Every NFL QB has arm talent and is a gifted athlete. Granted, some more than others. What separates talented gifted QBs from career starting QBs is between the ears. I don't know enough about Jacob Eason to judge his potential between the ears but he has the physical tools to succeed and is still young with time and opportunities to develop. By amazing coincidence I stumbled across this video by random chance and I graduated from high school with Jacob's father. We were ranked number one in the state most of the season for both our junior and senior sessions in '82 and '83. I hope Tony is proud of his son regardless of how his NFL career plays out. He is already a winner making it to the NFL in the first place.

He was not a bust because he actually performed up to his God givern ablilty.

With Wentz injured he was QB 1 in camp until he played himself into a QB battle with a shorter 6th round rookie. He ended up squeaking by Ehlinger to be the backup mainly because of his tools rather than his play. Word was Eason had no grasp of the playbook. That INT was also so badly overthrown it was also right to the defender. My guess as to why he was so quickly cut was that he ignored the play that was called and heroballed the INT.

Hard to say but I don’t fault him for following his dream/aspirations. I just feel like he never really played with the kind of emotion you want out of a QB, though. He looked fired up for the Apple Cup and I feel like he played better because of it. Always wish for his success though, being from SnoCo myself.

Smart went with Fromm. That should tell you something. I can't speak of his time in WA, but I watched Eason 's entire freshman year at GA and he showed flashes but couldn't seem to rise when under pressure. That TN game was an outlier. When they needed him to move the ball against better opponents, he struggled. He had the best RB squad in the country to help with Chubb, Michel, and Swift, and yet they struggled to move the ball when the good teams focused on shutting down the run game.

Tony Eason (dad) played at Illinois, not Notre Dame.
@DJChameleon87

Actually, there are two Tony Easons. One who wasn't his father and went to Illinois and was a journeyman NFL QB and the other Tony Eason was indeed a talented WR are Notre Dame after his successful High School career playing at Snohomish High School class of '83. That team spent most of his junior and senior sessions ranked number one in the state with a heavy run dominated offense centered around five star recruit Rick Fenney at Fullback (#6 recruiter in the nation). While the team didn't throw many passes, Tony Eason made the most of his limited opportunities and showed he was an explosive game breaking wide receiver. I also am a proud class of 1983 Snohomish Panther with many fond memories of football dominance.

Dude, his time at Georgia sucked… that why we benched him after his injury. Kirby missed the mark there not seeing how good Fromm was and instead going for dumb stats. as you say the window is so small. unless you are a very high draft pick, you might get zero chance to prove yourself. i am a davis webb guy. look at davis webb. preseaon MVP. had a lot to like about him in college. no one will put him on the field. he might have what it takes to be an NFL starting QB, but instead he will likely soon retire out of frustration.

I wouldnt say he was a bust. I think he just had bad luck with the injury and he was also a product of being a part of the early Kirby years where, it did not have to make sense, but Kirby was going to do what Kirby wanted to do. I am a UGA fan, and will tell you that a lot of people were extremely frustrated in how he, and the other coaches, handled a stacked QB room. Not to take anything away from Fromm, but UGA literally had lightening in a bottle in the early Kirby years, but somehow managed to only release a fart. I would say Eason was more unlucky than he was a bust. Again, UGA did good with Fromm, and he will always be a damn good dawg, but out of Eason, Fromm, and Fields, there is no reason that Fromm should have been QB1 there. (I agree that the decision cant be made by armchair athletes and those not in the program at the time, but Eason was the face of the program and Fields was the future, and both of them left the program and the worst of the three, talent-wise, was given the reigns.)
@stephencurry4835
@stephencurry4835 Жыл бұрын
Eason might’ve had a cannon for an arm but he also threw the bal lot the opposite team too often. You can complain about Kirby playing Fromm after he led the team into ND and walked away with a win. He was a busted coverage away from winning a natty. Fields might’ve been the “future” but in his time playing here it was clear he wasn’t better than 2018 Fromm…

@@michaelmerck7576 Some of that is true, yes, which is why I appended my statement. That being said, I did have a guy I went to school with who was on the team at the time say that Eason had all the talent as Fromm and that they could see Fields was the full package, but HE felt like Kirby did not want to risk swapping out the hot hand at the time in Fromm. Again, I was not there and cannot vouch for more than what I heard, and Fromm was good, but there are a lot of people bitter about how Kirby handled that situation and still are. I dont care either way since Kirby got UGA a natty and the team has been awesome, so I trust the process, but when you have three 5*s in the QB room at one point, it is just strange how mismanaged it was, or at least appeared to be.
