I've been using the Winter Sowing method with my seeds. The milk jugs, juice jugs, or whatever you're using are basically mini greenhouses that are set outside. Perfect solution if you have a small house with no room for an inside set up. This will be my 3rd year using it and it's been successful for me.

I bring my large seedlings out and put them against the house with shade cloth. All I have to do is move them from the shade and shade cloth to the sunny part of my yard ( about 3 feet) I also have a freeze cloth for any cold nights. I have a very short season. This has worked for me. Of course I’m retired and have time to keep a eye on them

I moved my peppers outside today into a tote I set up just for starting seedlings. I have the tote under my covered porch which gets the morning light. This has worked well for me so far and the plants get exposure without the winds and direct sun.

I use the doubling method 1/2 hour first day and double every day 1,2,4,8,16, overnight as long as the evening temp above 60 degrees.

The way I harden off plants is to put them out under the protection of my covered porch. They get ambient UV rays under there. Then as they get bigger, I put them in a spot on the porch that gets some direct sun. I still have to tend to them, just not as much. (Ah, I see you do something similar on your front walk)

You didn’t mention winter sowing in milk containers as a seed starting option. Works like a mini greenhouse but much cheaper!

As always a pleasure to see ya. Hardening off, I pretty much do the same as you , but i just take longer. For the first 4 days I put them out 15 , then 30, 45, then an hour. From then i move up an hour daily. Right now, im hardening off our brassicas. Tomatoes and peppers are under grow light's, and this weekend my husband finished building me a cold frame, so anything else not direct seeded will be grown in that. Im so thankful to you for discussing this because you answered my question about hardening off in a cold frame , i wasnt sure if I needed to or not, since this is the first time I've seen a cold frame ( in real life) and used one. I appreciate all your knowledge and passing it along . Give Phoebe a pet . Happy gardening

I have outdoor access to my basement. With the old style doors and steps going down. (I also have indoor access) I have my seed planting set up in my basement, so when im ready to harden them off, all I have to do is put them on the outside access steps and open the doors, i move them all up a step gradually closer to the sun and boom. Done.

Great information. I have a light rack in the garage made with closet shelving. I use it in the summer as a drying rack for garlic and onions. Nice portable potting bench. I still use the mobile T2013 for my potting bench. I can also go get gardening supplies in it. You do you about the cups. Happy gardening. Peace.

FYI to new gardeners out there using cans, cups, etc to start your seeds in an effort to save money, Dollar General sells 72 cell trays for $6. It will take up a third of the space as those cans. I sooooo wish I had had these at the beginning of this year.

I'm just going to have to keep my peppers under lights...it's still too cool here in 10a to put them outside even though they're maybe 9" tall (in 4" pots). I just pinched off the first pepper flowers yesterday. I think starting them before anything else in Jan may have been optimistic...🙄

Good morning Mr Scott! 🙂 My single seed challenge plant (a mystery volunteer I found in the garden), died already. However! 4 mysterious seedlings have popped up in the same pot and they look just like the first one! We shall see what they become! Right now I'm hardening off the onions and then brassicas will be started on St Patty's Day!

I'm starting my pepper hardening off today. I planted half of my tomatoes yesterday. This cloudy gulf weather is my favorite for putting out young plants. Your peppers look about the size of mine. What fertilizer do you use when you plant young tomatoes and peppers?

I use Dr. Earth slow release in the hole, but probably will use IV Organics 3-3-3 now that I am affiliated, and I really like the product. Its about the same as Dr. Earth.
@ScottHead

I just add some Dr. Earth or IV Organics all purpose into the hole I plant in, and then use Neptune's Harvest Tomato and Veg on the plants once ever week or two in a low dose.

Hello Mr. Head, I noticed quite a developed root system on those plants. Would you mind sharing what starter mix you used and do you always use the same one? Was it a liquid feed in particular that made the roots grow? Mine don't usually get like that and usually get very thin roots. Any input is much appreciated.
@ScottHead
@ScottHead 4 ай бұрын
I will have to look at the bag if it is still around, I just use whatever seed starting mix is on sale, no fertilizer unless the brand is Miracle Grow, they put those fertilizer pellets in even seed starting mix. The plants don't really need any fertilizer until they are about the size in this video. Then I just like fish emulsion.
@ScottHead
@ScottHead 3 ай бұрын
I use whatever seed starting mix is cheapest, its just peat moss and a little Perlite. I think my heat mat promotes good root growth.

Cucumbers actually do best when direct sown, so if your transplants don't thrive just plant a couple of seeds right next to them.

How is the war on nutsedge going. Made 2 comment on the last Nutsedge video. Suggested pouring boiling water in the blocks.
@ScottHead
@ScottHead 4 ай бұрын
Nutsedge war was a 75% success. Its not really much of a problem if I use mulch in the summer and keep it weeded. If it gets out of control then we go to war. I found the old fashioned laborious method works best - dig up all the nuts and runners by hand. My son and I did that a few years ago and it was more successful than the molasses and cardboard.
