We recently spent 12 nights in Scotland visiting places I’ve wanted to go to for a while. Stayed on CCCS, CLs, and Findhorn motorhome stopover and independent sites. This video has given me more ideas for cutting the cost of the next trip 😬. Great information

This is brilliant Cameron. Very informative. Just spent a fabulous week on Mull. Must get the message out to ALL vehicles travelling to Scotland for leisure. You are visiting places where people live and work so please please don't make the locals mad by holding up traffic. Pull over, let them pass. USE the passing places where provided on single track roads. Don't just bulldoze your way ahead expecting oncoming traffic to reverse (never reversed so much in my life as on this trip) mostly for Audi drivers 🤔. Can they not see the passing places? Do their vehicles not have reverse gear ? Do the drivers know how to reverse?? 🤨 I always, always, always pull over for local traffic or if I'm going slow. We are guests in their areas. Also we make a point of buying local too. We dont stock up before we go. Happy camping to all 😀

We rent out my sons house for short term holidays. It helps to bring money into a rural area. In return we book rural houses in various parts of Scotland. Would love a VW camper van, but they are pricey.

I told a young lad off, who was with his friends, for throwing litter. He came over to me and said he didn’t appreciate the way I had spoken to him - needless to say he picked the litter up - you don’t mess with someone in their 60’s whose raised their family to respect the countryside around them 🦆💕

Hello, you are such a Fina ambassador for Scotland. Your videos are very informative and encourage me to come. Not with a camper but with a modifyed Jeep which will serve me for sleeping as well. Not every night, but every second or so. The biggest problem is actually to know where to stay, but I'm going through your videos to get more informations. Thank you Sir!

Good video thanks. I was hoping to do a week in Scotland this year, I live in South Wales, otherwise known as rip off land, about 70 miles from the Pembrokeshire coast, where we normally seem to end up, as it is very convenient. Unfortunately,, when I looked into it I realised that I was looking at around £400 for fuel for a Scottish break, which, on a pension is not feasible. Lets hope fuel prices return to normal soon, but I am not holding my breath.

Cameron, thanks for a really informative and well presented video. We leave on our first motorhome trip in two days time and it is good to know there is still a welcome in the hills for us pesky English. It is unfortunate that a small few, inconsiderate, campers have the ability to upset so many with anti-social behaviour. We'll do our best to be good tourists and contribute to the regions economy by drinking the local ale regularly (in a social responsible way).

Really good and informative video Cameron - thanks. I use my campervan to access fishing, as well as the hills so only visit sites for essentials. Today here on Skye, I was coming back home from a hill loch via the road past Storr. It was nearly impassable due to stupid parking by cars and campers. Despite the new car park which carries a charge and was by no means full, people had thrown advisory traffic cones in the heather in order to park inside double yellow lines leaving no room for two cars to pass on the road! Meanwhile the car park has a limit of 2 meters so campers must park on the allocated roadside area. This was full of cars leaving little room for campers. Mostly visitors are very considerate but the few that aren’t make life very difficult for locals which is a sad situation.

I have just had a spur-of-the-moment week in the Borders. There are very few campsites there and the price for three nights at the (admittedly very nice) campsite in Moffat was eyewatering. I have not graduated to a van yet but I had several nights in my car when I couldn't find anywhere suitable. My Octavia has a home-made sleeping platform to level the luggage area and stick on curtains and I was comfortable. The reward was an unforgettable dawn near the Megget stone, a scene which I would never have been able to witness if I was sleeping between four walls.

Another good informative video 👍 There are a few new spaces about to open up here in the Oban area where certain laybys and car parks are being allocated for overnight campervan use. One caveat they have put in place is that they must be parked at least 6 metres apart (for health and safety reasons). I think this is a fantastic idea as it still leaves space for emergency use and stops folk being crowded out. Hopefully people will use them responsibly and with some consideration for the locals. Just last weekend I had to change my canoe trip plans because of wheel to wheel mob of campervans (complete with awnings and deckchairs) taking up the entire carpark at Taynuilt pier. It's a private pier where the owner has been kind enough to allow public access. These inconsiderate campers could very well bring about a stop to that public access. On a separate note (i'm about to sound pedantic, sorry), but you often refer to campervans as "wildcampers". Due to our fantastic access rights here in Scotland, many people use it as an excuse to go and do as they please. Wildcamping in the context of the Outdoor Access Code specifically states that motorised vehicles are NOT included. Until that is clearly publicised, irresponsible motorhome use (as well as car camping) will continue under the guise of "right to roam".
@CameronMcNeishOutdoors
@CameronMcNeishOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Curiously enough I was involved in the drawing up of the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and I argued at the time against use of the term 'wild camping'. Why? Because campervanners had been using the term for decades before the Land Reform Act legislation. I accept these terms can be confusing but 'wild camping' is still the term in general use. That's why I invariably refer to it as "so-called wild camping" or always put the term 'wild camping' in quotation marks. I'll continue to do that until someone comes up with a better, and universally accepted, term.
@dreichoutdoors5274
@dreichoutdoors5274 3 жыл бұрын
@@CameronMcNeishOutdoors I think you were quite right to argue to keep the two distinguished, that ambiguity definitely causes folk to misinterpret the legislation. Incidentally, my better half has previously pointed out your use of air quotes 😄 With the last 12 months of bad publicity i think many campers (tent and motorhome) will be looking to avoid the wildcamper label. I'd say you're probably one of the best qualified to give us some new terms 😄

Thank you Cameron for a very informative video. It's good to see something positive. The authorities, businesses and individuals appear to have responded well to the problem of insufficient temporary overnight stopovers for campervan and motorhome owners. This puts Scotland back on the list for a well overdue return visit from us, assuming that Covid permits. ATB. Neil

Excellent video thank you. We are considering the Outer Hebrides late September… but will see how the summer season goes with Covid and how local people feel about tourists. We really don’t want to upset anyone or be faced with a hostile reception. I think the hotel that charges for overnight parking, but gives a voucher to be redeemed for food and drink in their restaurant is such a good idea.! More places should do that. Good overview .... really hoping to give the Scots Foresty service a good later in the year (if it's still running) ... I just hope here in the UK we don't take the pi** with the costs of stopovers without services ... I fear there will be more stopovers that are overpriced than not .... still even a handful more of reasonably priced ones would be a good start .... The community-run aires on the islands are still some of the best in the UK ....

Braw video Cameron, thanks. Is it sad i can tell you used several shots from Rosemarkie in that video? We did a similar trip recently using sites instead of wilding for a change. Can thoroughly recommend the West Beach site at Hopeman. The food shack onsite is a real treat (20 hour smoked brisket!). This time of year the popular sites like West Beach, Grantown on Spey, Rosemarkie, Big Sands all get expensive, but roll on 7 weeks from now when the schools in England and Europe all go back and things quieten down, prices come down (especially mid week) and theres some great deals to be had. The problem with a lot of CL's in Scotland is they lack toilet facilities. Hopefully with the relaxing of the rules a lot more Aires pop up with toilet facilities now as thats all most motorhomers and campervaners actually need.
