WMO is 4 days a year event vs an NHL arena which is gonna be drawing crowds 41 (and more if the team makes the playoffs) days a year. And that's not even mentioning that Meruelo wants the area to also feature hotels, residential areas, retail, office space and even a theatre so you're probably gonna be getting increased traffic year round depending on how that pans out.

The hockey ice surface itself is not the issue. The rink only uses about 10,000 gallons initially and then a much smaller amount for resurfacing. The arena itself will easily use 3-4 times that much every game for restrooms, food, etc. Then add in all the other buildings that are planned for the arena complex and the water demand will be substantial.

All major league sports arenas and stadiums should be built near urban centers, not way out in the suburbs. They also need mass transit access, we can't have everyone driving to the rink. Most Canadian NHL and Pro Sports buildings (of course New York City too) have rail transit, walkable urban areas surrounding them, or lots of buses. Ottawa is pursuing an arena downtown with O-train access. Why can't the Coyotes build something near downtown Phoenix? Isn't the proposed rink on desert land that should be left in a natural setting? Phoenix is just sprawling over desert land instead of building up and densifying to avoid encroaching on nature. No wonder water is an issue there. Parts of North America are too focused on auto development, Phoenix especially.

About the same distance really. Proposed location is probably a lot more accessible via 51, 101, and i17. I think the East side of the valley has a higher concentration of hockey fans too so definitely easier for them. Also Glendale just kinda sucks imo.

It is about the route options. SE Valley with over 50% the pop in Maricopa County HAD to go through downtown Phoenix during rush hour adding an extra hour or go around adding ~50% the distance and roughly a similar amount of time. The new site means the vast majority of the Phoenix Metro area can get there in ~45-60mins because the main routes aren't affected by downtown traffic. Downtown Phoenix rush hour traffic is like a pump pushing water away from it. Getting into downtown isn't that terrible during rushhour. Going through downtown to get somewhere on the opposite side of town is the problem.

That's a very practical concern from the Mayor. Talking from Ottawa experience, the Kanata arena was outside of the City's 10 year development plan, which is reflected in the state of infrastructure. The Scottsdale mayor has no say in the matter. In the proposal for the arena, the Coyotes have agreed to connect it to Phoenix water & utilities. If he read it, he would know that. It's just political posturing. Think of it this way, you're building a pool and reminding your backyard, but your neighbor doesn't like it and is mad saying you'll be having too many people over your place and use his water. In this case, Scottsdale Rd is where the fence is (it's literally the boundary line) and Phoenix is west of the fence and Scottsdale is east

It seems as though the water issues are caused only by themselves. @UsedNapkin1 water isn't an issue in AZ. 70% of our water is used on agriculture, it's a corporate greed problem. Not a resource problem.

The owners of sports teams need to stop trying to be high end landlords and developers. Leave that shit to the real pros and just run the damn teams... This idea that new arenas need these car dependent 'downtown' style areas with all this forced mixed use is absurd. That stuff needs to grow naturally.

Most owners are into real estate in some way anyways. The idea is to create more revenue streams that can add profitability to the franchise. Kind of like a shopping mall, the team or teams are the anchor tenant but you make great money off all the little tenants surrounding the anchors.

Scottsdale is the most upscale area of metro Phoenix. This area is home to a lot of new development in Scottsdale and North Phoenix -- brand new corporate headquarters for ASM, Axion, DIscount TIre and Republic services. Two of the most expensive zip codes in all of Arizona are NEXT TO THIS DEVELOPMENT. I do not want to be near a monstrous eyesore like this (I live in North Scottsdale). We have enough shopping and probably too many restaurants. All will get developed is an out of place arena with no public transit and an already strained freeway system.

Depending on the source, agriculture uses +70%(72-75%) of the water. 2017 AZ water use was ~7mil acre-feet, golf courses used ~100k acre-feet with less than half being ground water. Golf courses account for ~1.4% the State's water consumption.

AZ and NV need to chip in with CA to desalinate ocean water to free up water for them.

Cali won't they want to claim drought and demand water from the Midwest (not gonna happen mind you) but desalinization is damaging to the ocean (there excuse for not using the natural abundance of water.

The Mayor of Scottsdale's statement is just hot air. He can posture all he would like, but the land parcel is under City of Phoenix jurisdiction. Scottsdale is upset because Phoenix gets the prestige of big 4 sports team (Yotes even floated the idea of changing name back to Phoenix Coyotes), gets NONE of the tax revenue from the district, and then has to deal with surface street traffic from events. Its kind of a big L for them. The issue of the water is a non-issue, Murello has already said they will pay for all needed infrastructure upgrades...this includes water, sewer, electric, and highway interchange upgrades. As per Mark Edelman, executive consultant for urban development from the Arizona Sate Land Department, in his memo to the City of Phoenix outlining the parcel and its needs and impacts, water from Phoenix can be established in 3 places, two lines on Deer Valley rd and one off Scottsdale Road. People are acting like developments cant add piping...well how do you think the piping for the developments around this parcel got there? You plan, you pay, you execute. The Murello ownership group has recognized this need, and will pay privately for this. This is part of their bid for the parcel.
