I remember weighing 158.3 lbs nearly 10 years ago. I was at this weight in March 2014. I feel like the quote above resonates with how I felt at that time and since then I got myself in better shape and made better food choices. My choices for food were mostly terrible then from my point of view before covid. I was still eating terrible food back then despite the restrictions of my diet which I still have to this day. I was at the gym with my former personal trainer right around the time that covid first hit. I stopped doing sessions with him in June 2022 since I had lifted a lot of weight in not such a good way and this happened nearly a year after my recovery from chemo and surgery since I was diagnosed with cancer in May 2021 and the surgery happened near the beginning of September. I had been demotivated from covid for several months to a year. This was not long before the time I found out that I had cancer. I was in terrible pain around this time and I shrugged it off as discomfort. I hadn’t realized that it was something much worse. This pain was confirmed to be from cancer with a CT scan and an ultrasound which detected the tumor in my left testicle which has since been removed through the surgery. I had to go into chemo after I found this out. I used some special mouth care equipment during the chemo and before and slightly after the surgery. I had lost some considerable weight during this period and was quite a bit underweight. I have gained a significant amount of weight back and I am now I am at a good and healthy weight between 145 and 146 lbs.

same. I was obsessed with ensuring I was just below a healthy weight at all times. I wanted to be at the very top of underweight because I assumed a healthy weight or average weight in the game was for "the average American,." which isn't fit. I was always thin growing up but was still terrified of gaining weight or god forbid being chubby. I only ate a tiny bowl of cucumbers for lunch for years during school and growing up I refused to finish my plate, believing that was "fat ugly girl behavior," so my family kept putting less and less food on my plate so I started starving but I still wouldn't finish my plate because I had to stay true to my beliefs. It was awful. Now I eat until I'm full with no shame and my body is bangin', if I do say so myself.

31:49 dude this line holy hell yes. The gaslighting yourself into thinking you were overreacting by having a negative experience when people were being incredibly toxic towards you is so freaking real. Yes it's important to self reflect because there are some instances where you are at fault or simply not handing things well, but there are also times when you are mistreated. Recognizing both is important. Recognizing your feelings and where they're stemming from is important. Recognizing if those feelings are ones that deserve your focus and energy or if they're ones to feel then let pass is critical. I'm just dumping my thoughts into the ether at this point but yeah. Trust yourself but don't forget to listen to reason and the perspective of others without discrediting your own experience.

I remember having this. I was underweight so it shows my Mii's arms flutter in the wind. My husband got morbidly obese and it fell like a giant rock behind him. He was so angry. He played a bit for a month here and there and the Wii kept saying he wasn't loosing any weight. I would play a bit more and after a while the Wii Fit would ask where he was. It didn't ask about the other two people it deemed average (two friends who tried it). It kept asking about him.

I kept thinking about Ring Fit for the whole video. Seems like it does everything Wii Fit pretends to do, and does it all even better with no judgement and lots of helpful check-ins. The warm-ups and cool-downs, reminders to hydrate, the ability to take a sec for a break anytime you need it without penalty, and your buddy character being pure encouragement- Don't get me wrong, it definitely feels a little silly to be told I'm doing great and cheered for every single squat, but on the other hand... I'm glad they didn't go this judgemental shaming route. Ring Fit is legitimately fun and you can see actual results (I didn't lose weight, but I did get stronger!) in as short as a few weeks or a month. Wii Fit seems... like it's done the exact opposite of what it was marketed to do.

Honestly as someone who very recently started trying to take my health more seriously and get active again, I needed this video so badly. Even though it's only been about a week since I started, I've already struggled with feeling guilty over days where I don't exercise or eat things that I "shouldn't." It's so easy to lose sight of what fitness should be about (a positive life change and a celebration of what your body can do) and fall into a trap of shame. Going forward, I'm genuinely going to keep this video in the back of my mind and remember that my personal fitness is about making myself feel good.

@@s.o.m3241 Ring Fit is better in just about every way compared to Wii Fit. It actively praises you for what you're doing right, as opposed to subtly shaming you for what you're not doing right. You can choose how easy or how hard the game is on a scale of 1 to 30 respectively. The exercises properly engage your body much more rigorously. And it plays like a light RPG with your choices in exercises and enemy targeting actually kinda mattering. Oh, and all the collectibles in the game are based on exercise apparel and healthy foods, so it passively encourages healthy habits.
@Ingri9
@Ingri9 5 ай бұрын
@@s.o.m3241 as someone already replied, Ring Fit does about everything better than Wii Fit. Worth mentioning that while Ring Fit asks for weight and age and height, they never mention BMI or weight gain or weight loss (they just use it to estimate calories which I have heard is always a bit less than what you actually burn from a workout). Ring (which is a character in-game, like how the balance board was made a character) is encouraging and fun and their only input is a few tips to perform better (to deal more damage to enemies) and to count down repetitions, which is especially useful for when you can't see the screen. For the first time in my life I kind of look forward to exercise because progressing through levels and following a story have always been a big motivator for me personally. And the writing can be surprisingly funny at times.
@animeartist888
@animeartist888 5 ай бұрын
@@s.o.m3241 Chiming in to say that Ring Fit is what Wii Fit was supposed to be. All the talk of teaching healthy habits and encouraging you keep them is actually there in Ring Fit. The guidance character is purely positive, not a single degrading word or shaming comment. And it actively encourages you to hydrate and stretch and such, too. Also checks in with you when you've been playing for awhile to make sure you're okay to keep going, especially if you start to struggle with the exercises suddenly. And even if you're away for awhile, the game's biggest concern is making sure the intensity/difficulty you had set before is going to still be okay now. Add to that the RPG game theming with enemies to beat, levels to explore, and challenges to clear- and it's honestly fun, even playing it day after day. And hey, if the RPG elements aren't your thing, there's a workout mode you can use instead. It's honestly great.

The ring-based fitness game (I forget the title) that came out during the pandemic was a much more positive experience than this seems to have been. I played that so much that I actually messed up my ankles and had to stop. I loved running through all of the crazy landscapes, and I just about lost my crap when I got access to the archery. It wasn't even about fitness pretty quickly, it was just about getting to pretend I was running around outside and shooting monsters with a bow. It did get judgy if you didn't play for a while, but I only know that because my husband wasn't as into it as I was. Anyway, so you should do that one for 100 days.

It's called Ring Fit Adventure! I have it and love it as well! It's hard to get back into after you've been away for a while, but I never found it to be judgy about it. It just asks if you're sure you'll be able to continue with the same intensity as before, gives you the option to turn it up or down before you even start playing. Seems perfectly logical to me. Maybe I've been away because I was morbidly ill and my muscle strength is just gone. Or maybe I've been away training for a triathlon and I really need the game to crank it up or I'll be bored.

My surface-level memories of Wii Fit are fun, but I think a lot of my body image issues today stem from this game. As a teenager, I always hovered around the upper end of “normal” BMI-wise, so the first time it told me I was overweight (and played that awful tuba sound that mocks you) I was shattered. I felt like a worthless, disgusting failure and instead of being motivated to work out, I just started eating the bare minimum all the time. My mom sat me down and explained how BMI doesn’t take into account weight distribution, so there was an important difference between my weight spread over a stick figure like the Mii and my own body (with muscular thighs, a D cup, and height stunted by anti-anxiety meds they put me on at 11). I’m almost 30 now and unfortunately still picture this game in my head when I weigh myself, hearing that tuba sound laughing at me. Even with a better understanding of weight and metabolism, I still have a horribly strong tie between my weight and my self-worth. 😔

That's certainly a different perspective. I just found the mocking hilarious and laughed at the tuba sound effect. Heck, I was even at the top of the "BMI" scale, which should've made me feel worse but didn't. It was just way too "cartoonish" for me to take seriously.

I'm so sorry you had that experience. I'm 40 and for the last 5 years I've been a dog walker. I walked at least 2 hours per day and ate decent. (Oatmeal breakfast, healthy choice dinners and occasional take out.) Guess how much weight I've lost??? I'm 5'6 and I've stayed 200lbs this whole time. Last year, I was like 'fcuk it all' and stopped caring about my weight. ❤ I hope you too one day will realize your weight doesn't define you. You are more than just a number on a broken machine.

It's actually really interesting seeing the perspective of someone of an average body weight play the game. I remember I picked up Wii Fit both as a bit of nostalgia and to encourage myself to start healthier habits when I was underweight, with the goal to *gain* weight. I remember the game being a lot more gentle towards me than seen here. Don't get me wrong, it did have its snark and I got called lazy a good share of times, but I never felt like it outright shamed me for it. I knew the game wasn't doing much for me for fitness in the direct sense, but I kept on picking up the game because it encouraged me to push a little further and gave me a fun way to keep track of my progress. While I slowly started to fade off of the game as I gained weight, I had a pretty positive experience with it. It's really unfortunate that it takes a complete 180 whenever someone is trying to lose weight and really goes to show the standards we have set. We perceive being "overweight" as not only unhealthy, but as a moral wrongdoing. You mentioned how the game is unable to account for outside circumstances like slipping up or a baby walking on the balance board, but it always just blames the player for whatever happened. Health is measured on an arbitrary BMI scale and shames you for not fitting neatly onto the scale. It especially sucks because as I mentioned, I positively benefit from the game in my attempts to gain weight, and they know how to use positive reinforcement for underweight people (at least from my admittedly faulty memory). So why does that have to change for people "overweight?"

They’re also shaming people with the BMI score. BMI is such a flawed metric by itself and doesn’t take into account a variety of important factors. Scott is clearly not almost obese, as Wii Fit suggests he is. But that score pushed Scott to essentially become underweight to fit into the BMI’s perspective of health. Luckily, he didn’t follow that advice, but it’s still toxic.

Tw/Cw, ED mentions, abusive/neglectful family mentions Just my personal experience with Wii Fit as someone with body issues and a toxic, neglectful family that shamed me a lot and also as someone with undiagnosed issues affecting my weight. Slightly trauma dumpy just to give my experience with Wii Fit and to explain how it only contributed to my bad circumstances and worsened me. Wii Fit helped me learn a lot of exercises, but especially coming from a family that shamed my eating habits and weight issues as a kid (even though they were unhealthy my entire childhood as well and also were neglectful and never tried to work with me on my picky eating, aka an eating disorder where I can barely tolerate most foods, I think the acronym is ARFID, but I'm dyslexic so may have mixed up a couple letters) really only led me to having a restrictive, weight obsessed eating disorder when I was 16. I was fit to some extent, but even when I was as low as 112 (really underweight for me, I'm 5'6, I was about the same weight as my 5'2 friend when she can keep her weight up. She's skinny cause of natural, genetic reasons), I was pushing myself more. Wii Fit could honestly be good for giving simple advice for doing stretches and such. I still use the exercises and stretches it taught me as a kid today and enjoy exercise as a way to handle my emotional state as well as deal with my chronic pain issues when I have the energy. But the way it shames you seriously messes you up. I have weight issues from an undiagnosed issue and have always fluctuated between overweight, normal, and a tad underweight/right at the line. I've had years of being skinny and years of being heavy despite 0 changes in my habits overall. Like. When you're a kid with a neglectful family that shames you and you have siblings telling you that no one will love someone fat and ugly, it gets to you, man. The exercises are fine enough even if they can get boring. But it honestly is really shameful and really just added a lot of unnecessary stuff. I would push myself far too much and my parents started just suggesting I do Wii Fit whenever I feel terrible to "be healthier." Not to mention BMI is complete bs and doesn't actually account for individualities within the body and also most muscly people and body builders would count as overweight or obese since muscle weighs more than fat. Especially when you're a kid and have no real clue about fitness or anything and are constantly bombarded with diet culture stuff, it gets to you. I cried a lot over Wii Fit as a kid because of my need to be perfect. I have a lot of other issues that are personal that contribute to my reactions to it, but seriously, it was certainly more harmful than helpful as a kid in a bad home with serious body issues that has been insulted for their looks since they were like 4. Looking back, it really feels more like it pretended to be well-researched by just...having the most bare bones knowledge. I still enjoy it, but if I'm gonna do stretching, I usually just look up an article of stretches to do for the areas causing me pain. I loved the games though, Ski Jump was my favorite. But like, yeah I had other issues contributing to my poor health including doctors and my parents ignoring signs of undiagnosed issues (I've had slowly worsening pain since I was like 5 and it's now gotten to the point I can barely walk and am out of breath which is only worsened by my weight from a large, unknown weight gain. And finding doctors that believe me and won't just look at my tests and go "Well, we don't really know what it is, but it's back to normal so it's fine" on the bare minimum tests is difficult) as well as my poor mental state cause there is so much trauma wrapped up in this body that it scares me sometimes, but Wii Fit certainly wasn't helping as it paraded around as the most knowledgeable and credible source for information. And since I was a kid in a family that knew nothing, I soaked it all up and started blaming myself even more. It definitely did more harm than good.

I stopped eating. Played for a couple years til i was too depressed to get up. People may be like : "oh all teens go through stuff like". I WAS TEN WHEN THIS CAME OUT. Anyways, wii fit sucked.
