This one was a long time in the making. I've been wanting to do a video like this for years now, and I finally found the time to do it. I love small towns, and I hope you enjoy this intimate look at a few of the places I grew up around. Thank you so much to all the fantastic people at Kindred Days, Horace Bean Days, and Barnesville Potato Days for putting on these great events.

This has been my main comfort channel for several years now, and I didn't really think about why until now. When I watch your videos, I get the sense that you are interested in real life, finding beauty wherever it exists. Not trying to make escapist, fantastical stories (though I love those too), but turning your eyes--and the camera--toward the best of the world. That's the kind of art I want to make, and I am so glad that it already exists.

@@JaseekaRawr my family is from South India, but immigrated to the States, but we celebrate it here nonetheless! Different communities pray for blessed tools of their crafts, whether they be farmers, priests, travelers, vendors, etc. and show appreciation for the unified efforts of everyone to keep a community thriving. Pongal, or Sankranti, is a great holiday in South India centered on appreciation and gratitude towards our own selves and far we have come, and to everyone around us who take care of others. We boil milk, having it run over the side of a pot, to signal peace and prosperity for all. I connected a lot with this video, living in the midwest nearly all of my life, and seeing that community, kindness and selflessness is a universal human quality.

A town near me has an annual festival in the Fall called the "Cooter Festival". For those of you who don't know, a 'cooter' is a name some southerners call turtles. Many people that move here or locals that aren't familiar with the term are often very hesitant with bringing their kids to a family-friendly festival.

@@billyford2262 Probably because in modern day American slang, cooter means vagina. It's like if you found out about the "vagina festival" but it turns out vagina is slang for tutles in one very small region of the world, which is the case here. (I've lived in the south my whole life and have never heard cooter be used for anything besides vaginas.) There are age restricted, adults only events thrown all over America where people can wear their fetish gear outside the house, buy porn, and meet other fetish enthusiasts and porn creators, which I'm assuming is what people are thinking of when they hear of cooter fest.

And the greased pole, whoever was first to grab the flag at the top won a big prize. Also Corn kernel sand box, handsaw contest, skillet toss, crafting contests, vegetable contests…and of course the largest ball of yarn in our state We also had annual 5k on Jan 1st called the chilly chili run. Cold af. A lady would dress up as a chili pepper every year and as long as you beat the chili pepper you could feel successful. Ended with a hot bowl of chili

Things I’ve learned about small-town festivals in North Dakota: 1) breakfast is pancakes 2) parades consist of fire trucks, tractors, and politicians 3) there is always someone selling honey 4) Minnesota has a weird thing for potatoes 5) North Dakota only has one dentist On a more serious note, my own family also started a local festival in our community and it’s a lot of hard work to put together every year, but like you said, it’s so wholesome and satisfying to see the whole community come together to celebrate and have fun. As I get older, all I want is a closer connection to my roots and neighbors, to begin positive influences in my local community, and to enjoy and appreciate the small pleasures in my vicinity. After all, I've been to Europe, Asia, plenty of other states, and Canada, but nothing feels like home-even if home has "nothing to do." I'll just sit on my porch and be happy, thanks. ❤️

I watched it grow and expand, people from one of the biggest cities in the country constantly moving here, the prices skyrocketing. People don't smile at you anymore, it's not safe to go outside once the sun starts setting. I miss my small town so much, I miss the love and the connections. I would love to move somewhere that would bring that same feeling back, because it's definitely not the same as it once was. I grew up in a tiny Virginia town on the river. When I was little, the town was really coming up - people would buy vacation houses out there, and we’d get a lot of tourism in the summer. We had something called “RivahFest” and I remember one year I guessed the number of candies in this massive tub of saltwater taffy and won the whole thing! I wish I was able to appreciate that upbringing more, but (like many rural US towns) racism was rampant and it wasn’t an idyllic place to grow up if you weren’t white. When the economy tanked in 2008, the area suffered as the tourism dried up and it never really recovered. Racial tension and poverty skyrocketed. My whole family ended up moving away for one reason or another. I’ll probably never go back, but I hope one day I’ll find the right place to plant roots and feel truly accepted into a community.

My hometown is known as the "Blackberry capital of the world" cause, lots of wild blackberries grow here, and we used to export them by train. So every summer, we've had a "Blackberry Festival", where you can buy as much homemade blackberry jams and jellies as one could want. And of course, there would be a parade and lots of bouncy castles and games for kids. I really enjoyed this video! Not many appreciate the midwestern nostalgia of small town fests, so this was nice!

aww this is so so sweet to read bc i used to live in a blueberry capital (probably not of the world tho i'm sure LOL) when i was a little kid, and we had our annual "blueberry jubilee" -- it reminds me so much of what you wrote. we used to buy so many blueberries that we'd end up freezing them, so all these years later, frozen blueberries are one of my fave treats.

I've lived in 5 different cities, 3 different states in the 10 years since turning 18. I'm by no means a wise old sage but one thing I've learned is despite some minor culture differences we all aren't that different. There's also a Dad and Uncle Earl living in LA right now that would absolutely throw down in a potato wrestling match. There are good and bad people just trying to get by in the biggest of cities and the smallest of towns. You will always find your people and piece of this world no matter where you are. Don't let your location be the deciding factor in your happiness. Thank you Scott, I needed something like this today, I know those sentimental feelings all too well.

I am so used to small towns being portrayed as boring and backwards, I didn't realize how much I needed a video like this. I moved to a big city for a short time and while I understand why that appeals to others I appreciate the freedom and simplicity of my home so much now that I'm older and raising kids. I love that even though some of these things are silly you were able to show why people love them. I live in rural Minnesota so it was funny seeing events that look exactly like our town summer event.

It’s really interesting how these events affect the communities, especially economically. Tourism is a huge way for towns to draw visitors and introduce new money to that community. This video reminded me a lot about that discussion in my travel and tourism class, and I’m literally going to school for Event Management. Even though those events were pretty formulaic, every single one probably benefited from bringing in that extra bit of revenue to the area. Thank you for making a positive video about this stuff, I love your channel btw. All your videos are very entertaining and though out.

I love how you added other country's equivalent :) We just went to a festival in a town about half an hour away from us we had never been in before this month. It was tiny, all organised on school grounds next to a field, there was a firetruck you could sit in and take pictures, try to pump water from an old water pump to hit some targets, a bouncy house, a school band I think (we missed that but caught a harmonica performance after that) and it ended with a bonfire and a fireworks show. There was also some quintessential Finnish festival foods, like grilled sausages and “metre liquorice” in different flavors haha This video really reminded me how similar people all over the world are, there’s these small town festivals in every country :) We live in a bigger city and while there are a lot of fun things here, that day in a small town was pretty special!

First off, the siren in Horace at 12:27. Did it happen to be at about 6 PM? If so, that was likely a "6 o'clock whistle," which is pretty traditional for small towns with farmland around them. Oftentimes, there's also one at noon, and they were initially used to signal the farmers that it was time for lunch and dinner (or dinner and supper to some older Midwesterners) and to go into the house from the field. I'm actually surprised that you didn't have them in Kindred, but I suppose some small towns just stopped doing it at some point. The nearest town to me has them, but had stopped doing at least the noon one for a while, until bringing it back in the '80s or '90s, possibly mainly to annoy my uncle 🙄who was known to stay up late and sleep in. Small towns, amirite? I can always hear that one, being only about a mile away, and, when the air conditions are right, and I happen to be outside, I can hear the one from the next nearest town, about 5 or so miles away as the crow flies. Secondly, good on the ones that have a theme. The nearest town doesn't have an official festival, because it is just too small, but many of the other ones in this and the neighboring county do. Most are just Days, but that second closest town that I mentioned above has the annual Bologna Festival, which is just an outstanding name. Yes, they actually do make bologna there.
