Love your channel, Scotty! I've got a 2005 Civic EX, and have been doing all of the work on it myself without a whole lot of prior knowledge. I'm about to replace the much of the front and rear suspension with new parts (coilovers, bushings, ball joints, end links, rack ends, etc). Took the last 6 months or so buying the needed tools and parts so I can do this kind of work myself, and it really feels good to have the tools I need for the job and be able to get the work done for a fraction of the price that I'd pay someone else to do it.

@@doodletechnologies3189 I think a lot of them don't want to be in the business of supplying parts for vehicles not in production. I've heard people argue about whether or not there really is a law saying they have to supply parts for some length of time, but I can imagine them pricing them really high to discourage people, yet be compliant with the law. I can't believe the FWD axles Honda sells (600+ dollars each) are 6x better than those I see for around 100.

my question is how many of those OEM parts made in the same factory as the after market parts. Seems to me there is probably only so many companies actually building alternators for example.
@travispratt6327
@travispratt6327 4 жыл бұрын
David Kearns Well, they could use different tolerances and specifications to get a cheaper price even if it’s the exact same factory, but with that being said a lot of parts have to pass certain standards and safety minimums, so it’s probably very similar if not the same.

As usual, you are right on target Scotty. But here is what you missed.... When you go to the dealer for a repair, they don't always use the OEM part you expect them to use. Most of the time they order the part from the local Auto Parts store as you would, but they charge you the OEM list price for that part. I have seen this happen a lot of times when the local parts delivery truck comes into their lot. You don't get what you pay for, there is no way you can be assured you are getting OEM parts unless you are standing right there with the mechanic when he opens the OEM box and displays the part for you. Been there and have seen it happen!

Some people are good with junk quality. Over time you spend more when you dont buy quality. Its the same mindset as those who are rent-a-center or money tree payday loan regulars. In a pinch, you gota do what you gota do. But living life with the aspect of driving on the spare vs using the spare as a very temporary emergency ALWAYS costs far more down the road.

My neighbor buys used tires. He has to, because he takes corners on 2 wheels all the time. He’s lucky if he gets 2 months out of a tire. Sometimes you have to buy cheap or used...

Thanks for the great video, Mr. Kilmer! I second your enthusiasm for certain aftermarket and second-hand parts. There is something comforting about buying OEM parts though. When the originals last a long time before needing to be replaced, I’m compelled to buy the same exact part again.

+1 for OEM. The scrapyard is my friend! The only time I deviate is when I'm very confident that a newer aftermarket part exceeds the original quality. The key to buying OEM is understand that your dealership can still mark it up 200%. (Not everything, but some things.) If you can find the actual Nippon Denso or NGK or whatever part number, sometimes you can buy it locally or online MUCH cheaper.
