Hey dear kindly advise me my car overheated and when I stopped it never started again. It is an automatic car. I refilled the water which am sure the car cooled but the dashboard it shows when I put the car remote key and press the start button, it says engine fault and later it shows battery low start the engine. The mechanic says that the engine is dead but he does not give the exact diagnosis. Should I believe him?

@@7natcho I don't think scotty says to never change the brake fluid (he did mention coolant could be 7y/150k (happens to be 100/150k for my Prius, "life" on my bwm, 100k on my Acura). Brake fluid is hygroscopic as you say, so usual recommendation is replace every 2-3 years (time based not mileage). I just changed it on my used 155k/5 years old prius and it was very dark yellow with some small particles, instead of clear. $6 in part, and 20 min job if I had to do it again. easy peazy (once you figure out how to get Prius into 'invalid mode' and let it pump rear fluid for ya). I disagree with scotty on ignoring that maintenance light - most modern car it's a reminder to change the oil (and you need to figure out what additional items if you hit 30k, 60k, 100k, etc...). The Acura reminds you with a code to track the other items...

Good on you, Scotty. Especially my female friends telling me how they been taken and/or never feel like they can trust a shop not to take advantage of them. Even though the vast majority of all people don’t know much at all about car maintenance and repairs, the dishonest mechanics often do seem them as easier marks. Helping people like you’re doing here is really laudable.

Well said. Used car dealers and mechanics start drooling when someone who isn't vehicle savvy come through the door. My buddy bought a car at a used car dealer on the other side of town last month, and I wish he brought me with him. It's obvious they cleared the codes before he test drove it, because a few days later, the engine light came on and I'm getting all sorts of codes on my scanner. Also, the car was practically bone dry with no oil and the rear brakes are worn to nothing. It's also got a coolant leak, and the ac needs a recharge. This is why I hate used car dealers. Even though he bought it as is, we have certain lemon laws in CT, that even with an as is sale, prohibits shops from willfully hiding problems on a car, and must pass a multi point safety inspection. I'm going to help him get his money back and leave this piece of junk in their driveway.

Great advice, Scotty. As a 78yr old, I grew up doing a lot of my own servicing and repairs on my cars, even though I wasn't a trained mechanic, but cars were a lot simpler back then and manuals were available for DIY people like me. Now, I drive a Peugeot only 4 months old with more bells and whistles than you can poke a stick at, but it's a great car and I can but keep your invaluable advice in mind for whenever the service light comes on. Oh, by the way, I'm Australian and that's why I'm driving a Peugeot, my 7th, and they've all been reliable great cars. Cheers!
@michaelmartinez1345
@michaelmartinez1345 10 ай бұрын
@grahamrankin5557, Columbo drove a Peugeot!!! His looked like one from the mid-1960's... And yes, it did have some issues, but I'll be damned if that thing didn't take him all over Southern Calif. all during that series!!! The older cars & trucks are highly sought after because of their Known inherent reliability... The really nice ones that are simple and drive well are going for amazingly high prices these days... Something that probably WON'T happen with most of the newer vehicles, because of their extremely complex systems, and lack of interchangable designs & equipment.... If you want reliability, go with something simple, and go with something that is popular, as the parts will be easier to find in the aftermarket. This will give your bank account a well deserved relief from pouring $ into your vehicle.

Same here. I was taking my car to this mechanic in town and I seriously started getting this feeling he was sabotaging my car because it was like clockwork, as soon as he fixed something- something else went wrong. Head gasket then ignition switch then valves needed reseated then brake master cylinder one thing after another. Finally I took my car to the other mechanic in town and ever since then I've been having virtually no major issues with my car since. Now this other guy will do exactly what needs to be done and even fixes up little things here and there for free. Door was catching so he replaced the pins, store was out of regular brake pads so bought me the premium set at no extra charge. Ignition locked up in my pickup and he knew I needed it for work so he had it fixed for me overnight.

Frankenscuzz I've got a great Mechanic who when I can't do the work myself! He's an old timer from Hungary who used to work for Volvo years ago! He charges $25.00 an hour, labor, buys most parts off EBay, makes nothing on parts, and would never do anything to the car it doesn't need! He's my "Scotty"! As trustworthy as they come, a great guy! As they say... " one hand washes the other"! I recommend him to all of my friends, family, and , my Company, which has a fleet of cars! His business has grown 10 times more since I met him! He now has 2 Tech's working for him, pays them very well , and still charges just $25.00 per hour plus parts! Boy did I luck out!

True...keep your own log book of kilometres and date of procedure/parts used based on the service book intervals but doing the intervals more frequently than the book suggests. The service soon light is irrelevant after that. If you want to do the light thing reset the light interval for the distance you choose in the future for oil change.

@@Nigel__ The majority of folks who post here blame ALL mechanics for the actions of the dishonest ones. Are honest mechanics THAT hard to find? I don't know. I'm simply reacting to what I read in these posts on a regular basis. It's all I have to go on like I guess these mechanic "bashers" are doing the same as well. Apparently good honest ones are indeed "few and far in between like brother Peter Suarez posted above. I'm just as straight up as Scotty 'cause I try to put myself in other's shoes. Sure I feel nervous if I had to take my car someplace, but since I'm still able to do my own stuff and I help others, let them buy their own parts if they choose to, all that stuff. It's the places we often work at that are to blame sometimes, not us. I work for ME now and don't have a problem explaining what need to be done and why. I put myself in the customer's place. That just about covers it my friend.

Scotty, you are spot on! I’ve been driving for 60 years and I grew up working in my cars, like every kid in the sixties did. I have a 2007 Nissan Xterra I bought in 2009 with 40,000 miles on it. Two years ago, I took it in to a garage for routine service and an alignment check, since it had never been aligned since I bought it. Well, I needed $3400 in repairs. Struts and shocks, lower control arm bushings, motor and trans mounts ( $660 labor). And some other stuff. Why do I need struts and shocks? Well, because of their age. I had NO symptoms, and I never had anybody tell me I needed that kind of repairs. 90,000 miles. Serviced regularly. So I got a second opinion, and followed the Master Tech under the car on the lift with a flashlight. Yeah, the pax motor motor mount is a little weak, and the fan clutch will need replacing in about three years. But, otherwise you’re good.

I called the Honda dealership to schedule the recall and get a quote for replacing the toggle. Brian Getty service advisors are meant to up sell to their customers. Service advisors are meant to up sell what their mechanic(s) recommend.

The biggest scam is the state inspection in Texas. That gives mechanics a blank check to "fix" whether just to pass state inspection. Happened to me. Mechanic said I needed a new master cylinder. He drained the brake fluid and said it was leaking. I drove it home, replaced the master cylinder myself and drove it back. The mechanic was all pissed and eventually passed my inspection.

One place charged me for 3 wipers for my Ford Taurus, I didn't realize it till afterwards looking at the bill.. wasn't about to go cause a stink over 9 bucks. But they lost our family's business for life and I have made sure to spread the word to friends!!

My stepdad know a mechanic who helped repaired our family's cars over the years. He owns a outdoor shop not far from our house by the interstate. I heard some bad mechanics who fix poorly or procrastinate for months yet he is the only mechanic I rely whenever there's a issue. Hope he doing okay since he is elderly.

Bring your car in for state inspection and see what they try to hit you with. If nothing, give em a shot with something else... really hard to say though unless you know about your car and look before and after bringing it in... at that point, might as well do repair yourself if yoh have the time

I was talking to a guy who took his work van to a "reputable" garage for a tune up and they charged him for 8 spark plug wires and 8 spark plugs... He told them "l am not the smartest person in the world but I can count!"His van had a V6!😅

I had a guy i trusted. Was just him and his son, 5 blocks from my house. I could drop my car off in the morning with a blank check say what i wanted done and to do whatever else needed to be done and just call me if it was over a certain $ amount. I miss that place. Am 1200 miles away now and still looking for a place like that again.

Agreed,... hate when other people's audio jumps up/down too much, I watch at night and don't want to wake the family but still hear. Scotty's does great, he's obviously good at more then just the car stuff. Also like some of the little inserts he puts in the top right corner which are often funny. Hope he'll make them last longer so I don't have to rewind, goofy youtube doesn't have a 10 sec back/rewind button. THANKS SCOTTY, ALWAYS GREAT INFORMATIVE WORK, AND ENTERTAINING TOO, NEVER BORING. YOUR AWESOME. CHEERS FROM PHOENIX, WISH YOU WERE CLOSER !!

teatonaz the mobile youtube app lets you rewind, and also pressing the left or right arrow keys do the same, not sure how you haven’t figured that out. but still, i hate it when audio isn’t done well in a video. i can tolerate it, but having consistent video and audio quality is bliss.
