Hello Scotty those engines are good but those transmissions are known for problems and same with the Jimmy in the 90s my mom had one and the transmission went out but the engine was still strong but ended up scrapping it because the transmission cost more than the car to fix

I have a 2007 LT I-6 built in Ohio, been in Arizona all its life 150k Totally Rust free. The best SUV I have ever owned. All of a sudden people want to buy it from me since the new 2021 came out.

@@danielbaird2130 I have a 2012 z71 with 143k miles I absolutely love the truck, I have had 0 drivetrain/mechanical problems with her, just alignment issues.. but that’s also cause I lifted it 🤷

As a Trailblazer owner (2008 LT) I'm glad to see Scotty has so many good things to say about it. Almost 175,000 miles on mine means it has plenty of life left.

386k on my 09 Roughly the last 150k was pulling a 5x8 enclosed job trailer around the country for work. It honestly feels and drives like it always has. I don't know if I'm going to be able to see this thing die of natural causes, before I do.

@@angrybadger8136No. 2002 was the first year the TrailBlazer was introduced. It came with the 4.2 L6. The Blazer had the 4.3 V6. We had a 2002 TrailBlazer LTZ. I miss it a lot.

My 04 Trailblazer has 265k miles and still running strong with original drivetrain. Very reliable truck that has never left me stranded even if parts were falling off or I was peg legging it home due to a sensor or part.

Same with my 2002 Trailblazer. Original powertrain. Still runs like a clock with 240k miles on it. Never left me stranded for the past 19 years.

I have a 04 trailblazer with over 470,000 miles on it . Original motor , had tra s rebuilt and shocks but the rest is still good . The inline 6 they put in the blazer is great with maintenance...

That's pretty amazing. I know someone here in Saudi Arabia who has one with 700,000+ kilometers on it with the 4.2 litre. No rust at all given the dry climate. They really are great vehicles.

True that, I drive a 2002 chevy astro awd, all the basic stuff works and the original compressor makes rattle snake noises sometimes but still the van has cold air conditioning. I did put a fuel pump in at 147k, 220,230 miles now, the 4.3L V6 runs good, the 4L60E slips from 2nd to 3rd letting off the gas a little (it's beginning to go out) but I'm still driving it for $1000 three years ago lol

@@Anth230 cause the new ones have problems before they even reach 25k kms. look up the chevy pickup drivetrain issues, they got too much play in the rear end that makes knocking noises on brand new pickups. i wouldn't want to see how many issues they got 200k kms of abuse later..

I have one for my business vehicle. It’s rough but after 300k the engine and transmission still work flawlessly. AC still works and not one light on the dash. Comfortable ride.

My mom gave me her old trailblazer when I got my license, lots of great memories and really great thing and I’m thankful for my mom. I worked and saved money to buy a new car and this car was great for a 16 year old me and helped me learn to take care of a car. Great Car and the four wheel drive helped with Northern Nevada winters. Great Video Scotty!

He's recommended several GM trucks over time including older Tahoes and Silverados and the Trailblazer SS.

@@midnightdragon5477 Right, I think as a whole lineup, he still definitely doesn't trust GM. But you can pick and choose certain older GM models which have certain configurations which are relatively reliable and if they're available at a very low price, no problem getting it.

Good deal! I respect these SUV's because of their land whale style ride, decent rough road capabilities, SS trim and value. Not a wonderful vehicle, but a decent one. I've known several people with way over 200K on stock parts (Or mostly stock aside from having their trans replaced.) with nothing but oil changes, and I also know several people that's had nothing but problem from their TB or Envoys. If you got the latter of the two, that truck will last you a lifetime!

@@OhPhuckYou there’s always the lemons...if u get a good one ur lucky...cuz there’s always the lemons no matter the brand or vehicle...I had an 05 dodge stratus with the hated 2.7 l v6 in it...I drove it for 10 years and put 100,000 miles on it used...drove the hell out of it too...to this day she will still start right up even with the water pump going bad...wish I could fix her cuz it’s literally the best vehicle I’ve ever owned...anyone else will tell u opposite cuz they don’t know anything about it..,learn the vehicle inside and out...that’s what I do now

Very happy about this video!! My boyfriend just bought a 2006 Trailblazer back in August with 177,000 miles on it. A few minor things needed to be fixed on it but, the truck still seems to have lots of life left in it. He had a 2004 that had 208,614 on it. Engine and transmission were still good the back end of the frame just rusted away and rotted out. He had that Trailblazer for 10 years!

I have a 2006, and had it since 2012 with 50,000 miles .now I'm at 160,00. Had to get some frame work done which cost me 2,000$ but I'm trying to get atleast 230,00 miles out of it been getting the frame sprayed with fluid filming once a year to stop/slow down the rust. I'm but to get it done twice a year, I'm up north Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. I drive it probably 7 times a month now compared to how I drove it all the time when I got it. I have another car and 2 motorcycles so I cycle between all 4 vehicles, but trailblazer get driven less cause its the worse on gas but its the most comfortable

Had one for a year, drove well and relatively easy to work on ( I was a super newbie to cars) I changed a few hoses, all struts, brakes & rotors, AC cold as ice, heat was great, I bought a nice set if used tires , spent no more than 800 on it, bought it for $1900

I have a 03 Gmc Envoy with the 4.2 I6 we’ve had it since it was new, 325k miles original engine and transmission it still runs like new and shifts smoothly, very underrated vehicles, for the money you can’t go wrong with them.

You forgot avalanches and gmc sierras my 2002 avalanche still runs excellent even with 200k miles on her and my GMC Sierra 2002 also got 480k miles not a single issue on neither one of them

Some of the most solid vehicles ever built along with the Avalanche to be honest. Ironic being a GM product. But they did very well with those trucks.

I bought my 04 a year ago and it’s still running strong, best daily I’ve ever bought never getting rid of it. Just only thing to check if you feel a lack of power is to check the catalytic converter on these. They get clogged really easy. Other than that it’s perfect

I traded a beat 2005 Nissan Titan for a 2wd 2002 Trailblazer straight up. The Titan was having transmission issues but the guy needed a cheap truck and he was willing to fix that. Engine ran great, no 4x4 because it wasn't working either. Vacuum lines are known to go bad on them. There was nothing wrong with the Trailblazer other than a powersteering issue and a missing cylinder. Sparks plugs fixed that, a simple hose replacement fixed the power steering. With over 200k miles this thing is so smooth. Drives like a dream. You still see a lot of them on the road.

'08 trailblazer with 165k here, still going strong! Finally got my fuel pump replaced so the check engine light that's been on for a decade is finally off. Couple electrical issues, but honestly I'll probably be driving this thing for another long while!

I have a 2006 GMC Envoy 5.3 Denali and I love it. Handles like a dream and solid built like a Mercedes. Only trouble is it's more work to fix transmission and engines, because a big V-8 takes up a lot of space, so it's better to get the 5.3 in a Suburban where you have room to work.

@@dennishassler605 I would agree with that in that it is much more difficult to repair. I had to do an oil pressure sending unit over the summer and it was a bear to replace because it is located in the back of the motor. They do handle like a dream though

i've got one of these, and up here in northern michigan these are the best. Comfy for the summer with alot of cargo room, and provided you dont have bald tires they are unstoppable in the winter.

Thanks for this upload, Scotty! I enjoy your channel. I have the same Trail Blazer (150some,000 miles) and I love it. The Chevy dealer nearby screwed up an oil change last year and the engine started knocking this past August, nearly a year later. I'm having a Jasper crate put in it now. I love that 4.2 straight six. Smooth, tough, durable; it's one of the best vehicles I've ever had, crappy gas mileage notwithstanding. Needless to say, I do my own oil changes now. Lesson learned - don't go to the dealership for anything unless you're buying parts. Even then, don't go to the dealership. Rock Auto is wonderful.

@@adrianasnell8489 5k seems a little high, but not outrageous. One of the first things I would do is check the frame. If it’s rotted out, run. Secondly, check and make sure the engine is not running rough. Those engines are known for killing ignition coils. But overall, if it’s in good shape, I’d buy it. My wife and I bought a 06 trailblazer identical to that one 13 years ago. It's been paid off for 9 years, it has 195,000 miles on it and I'm confident that it will give us another hundred thousand miles. We since had to upgrade to a larger family vehicle, but we're hanging onto this one for my daily commute to work. The fuel economy is wonderful compared to my 06 Duramax. And on a side note, I put Cooper tires on all of my vehicles.

I bought a 05 trailblazer LT in really good condition 7 years ago and it still drives like new . I drove it from Nashville to Miami a bunch of times no problems.

I inherited my grandpa’s 2002 Trailblazer LS. My grandma bought it brand new, and I’ve known this truck since I was 7 years old. I went from riding in the “back of the back” as my cousins and sister would call it, to piloting it. It’s in good condition but it’s been down the last year because it needs an alternator and a water pump. I’m going to get it fixed and do an overland build with it so I can taking it camping with friends now.

Had a 2002 LT back in 2007-2012 never a problem. Best little suv to drive around. Always reliable. The engine fired up like a champ and it took off once you floored it. I had many good times in that truck. Now looking to buy another one used because they’re so fun to drive around and good for my area that rains a lot.

Inherited my dad's 2009 Trailblazer LT with the 4.2L after he could no longer drive. He was an old school mechanic and he loved this vehicle. Only had 114,000 kms when I got it and now at 144,000 kms. One of the easiest vehicles to work on that I've ever owned and serves primarily as my winter vehicle. Completed basic preventative maintenance including new shocks and struts (they were toast). A very underrated, vehicle that keeps on ticking. Definitely keep up on the fluid changes to the transfer case (special GM only fluid) and differentials. Will greatly extend the life of those units.

there's a couple things to 'customize' on this style suv. water drainage off the windshield being a major issue. you are 100% correct about keeping clean fluids in them.

@@richsweeney1115 yeah I didn't know how sensitive the 4l60e is and at high mileage the pan should be dropped ever 6000 miles. I just ordered a 3-4 clutch repair kit. The mechanic was not happy when I told him. haha.

I have a 2008 trailblazer LT. Got it in 2010 with 46,xxx miles. Currently has 168k on it and never had any issues except for small minor things. I will never get rid of it, absolutely love this vehicle. ❤

I had one of those. I worked great. Loved the I-6 engine. It had plenty of power. I only put Cooper tires on my vehicles when the OEM tires wear out.

The Trailblazer is not bad... Just the transmission and front diff, nahh but really I put 450,xxx miles on one before it finally lost oil pressure partly because I stopped caring enough to change the oil as frequent as I should have

You know what Scotty, we have a 2008 Trailblazer LT with the 4.2 I6 and I can't say enough about how reliable it has been... Yes, we've had our little hiccups, at 175, 000, the original water pump finally went on it can you believe that? luckily we caught it early! Thanks for sharing!

I have an '05 Envoy XL with the same engine! I love it! 190000 miles and going strong! About the transfer case, could it just be the actuator on the case? Mine acted up! A relatively cheap fix, & 4x4 works perfect now!

My 06 TB has barely 100k miles here in Donelson, TN. Super comfortable on trips. Great turn radius, and sound system. Engine and transmission are still fine. My only real complaints are impractical access to the spare tire and several electrical problems. I've replaced TWO heater fan motors and the instrument cluster. Recalls were for electric problems as well.

I really liked this video. Reminded me of when my dad bought my sister's roommate a car. Dad paid $3500 for a '94 Nissan Altima back in the Summer of 2001. It was my first car and I had to pay for the insurance on it and anything else that went into it while in college. Lasted until the Summer of '08 when the radiator cracked.

They're great trucks and the i6 is a very strong and reliable motor. I picked up my LT EXT for 2300 with only 90k miles on it, but being in the rust belt is its only downfall. I'm currently replacing the transmission because the transmission line rotted out and pissed out all its fluid while on the highway, completely toasting the trans.

I'm happy with mine. Just got it September of 2019 with 99k on it. Has 111k on it. Difference is mine has the 5.3V8. No complaints here.

I have a 2008 Trailblazer with 167,000 miles on it Bought it in 2016 did some suspension work ( repairs ) and replaced the catalytic converter and the upper break light, that is pretty much it. runs great, nice, and smooth and the 4 wheel drive works fine. Now what I do with it may be a little different, Most of the time it is just back and forth to the store, I am 74 years old and live alone, but in the summer I cut firewood to heat my home in the winter, it hauls a trailer full of firewood, every day or so, between the end of May and the middle of August when I finish for the season. It also drags the logs out of the woods, in 4 wheel drive of course. And still looks almost new. It hauled 7 cords of firewood this year. a half a cord at a time ( small trailer ) . It actually suprised me the first time I hooked it up to a log and it didn't have any problem at all pulling it up to the landing, where I cut the log up. Have bigger plans for it next year and a much longer rope.

I hooked up a tow chain to the trailblazer to haul out a stump - I used a tire to get better leverage to pull the stump up - easy.

Have 2006 Envoy SLT with the 4.2 I6 with 204,500.00 miles. This vehicle is my second one of this model. Other than maintenance and replacing cloudy headlight assemblies, it is still a great SUV and one of the last true mid-sized vehicles. I just bought a vehicle with all the bells and whistles and I drive this vehicle as a daily driver, but I'd drive it anywhere. The 4.2 Atlas engine used new technology back when it was new. Glad you did a review on this engine Scotty. I still love the lines of the GMC Envoy.

I still have the '06 5.3 v8. No issues, but did disable AFM to prevent lifter issues.

That 5.3 is a solid engine. Mine has 370k. I’ve hardly had to do anything other than change the oil regularly.

imo, if your 5.3 uses too much oil, spend the $50-100 to turn off AFM. There is also a tsb for a 1hr diy to replace driver side valve cover. Excessive oil consumption can kill the catalytic converter.

i bought my first 2004 trailblazer in 2009. i love that thing. in fact i bought two more as "parts" vehicles, but ended up getting them all going and made them all daily drivers. two of them have 300k miles on them each and i drive 60 miles everyday just for work and often take trips all over the place, infact about 8 years ago i drove one of them across the country to southern california and drove up the coast, camped on top of a mountain and drove back. the gm360 has their problems but they are predictable and easy to fix. most 4wd drives problems are not the transfer case, but rather its the axel disconnect, which is a cheap part and for a guy with basic knowledge can replace that part in about an hour or less.

I had a 2004 Trailblazer...bought it new. Had it until last year. It was 'OK'. The good: 1) yes Scotty, that inline 6 was smooth. 2) it had incredible torque, of which, 90% was available at only 1800rpm. 3) it drove alright for an SUV. The BAD: 1) Gas hog! About 17mpg. 2) while I never had any major engine or trans problems, I was $100 dollar'd to death. It was always something. Three front wheel bearing replacements. (supposed to be good for life of car), new instrument panel (OUCH$$), transmission fluid lines, Several thermostats...and you have to take the alternator off to access the thermostat. New power steering pump, new starter....the list goes on and on. The last few years I had the car, I spent about $1000/year on repairs. Then the car started to SHUT OFF while I was driving it. First time, I was 80 miles from home. ($300 tow charge) Ignition switch was replaced...kept shutting down. Ignition switch was replaced again, and I got 75 yards from home and the car died. Couldn't find the problem/reason. Trailblazers were NOTORIOUS for electrical problems and I wasn't about to try to chase down a problem on a 16 year old vehicle with 140k miles. I junked it. Now I have a Toyota Rav4. After watching Scotty's video, I'm wondering if it was a fuel pump?

If you lived in the north, their AIR systems were notorious for making them emissions non-compliant. The solenoid on the exhaust header would seize open, backfeeding 'wet' exhaust into the pump after warmup. Water would accumulate at the low point in the system, which was the AIR pump, and either freeze and crack the pump housing or would leak out and take out the solenoid mounted on the pump body. These could be $300-500 just in parts every couple of years.

I never really thought of the GM 4200 inline 6. But I appreciate Scotty disclaiming when bashing cheap made in china tires that it depends what you want. The cheap made in saipan tires I bought from Walmart for my friend's hooptie 98 olds regency are still running fine 2 years later. And were allot safer than the horribly dry rotted tires that were on it before replacement.

I've got an 03 that just turned 194,000 miles old and it's been one of the best and most reliable vehicles I have ever owned. I absolutely love it. It's cheap built and it's not a luxury vehicle by any stretch of the imagination but it does what it's built to do and it does it well.

180000 miles transmission went out was a real pain in the butt to switch out. Extended has lots of room but everything made really cheap.

Purchased my 2007 Trailblazer in the same year with forteen thousand miles on it and 15 and a half years later it runs strong and smooth with over two hundred and fifty two thousand miles! No knock, smoke, no burning oil, drove it from Florida to New York and back to Florida with a closed trailer hooked onto it! I have used this SUV for hauling my instruments all over the place and it still starts up at the drop of a dime! Of course I maintain oil changes and already replaced the transmision oil and rear differential oil and the car just keeps going! Even the AC is original and the paint still shines after a car wash! Best and most dependable car I have ever purchased!

I bought a 1999 GMC Jimmy as my first car at 16 while working at McDonald's and loved it. 9 months later I sold it because it needed $2000 in repairs and bought a 2002 F150 with the 5.4 that has 213,000 miles with money saved up. It runs great, I drove it on a 600 mile road trip with no problems and most importantly I don't have a car payment.

I've had my 4.2L 2 wheel drive 2007 LT Trailblazer for 6 years now. I absolutely love it. Runs great and like you said lots of after market upgrades because its a Chevy. Very easy to work on unless your pulling the starter. lol Love your video's learned a lot from you.

Ended up buying a 2002 GMC Envoy...had issues with it ..got towed around Christmas/New Year... couldn't get it out by then. Bought a new exhaust kit for it before the impound...so now I got this TB but it does have an engine issue!!

Had a '61 Biscayne with a 1-barrel carb straight 6 and 2-speed powerglide transmission. It also had a single point ignition, and was turn-key. I went anywhere I wanted in it-including the snow in Pittsburgh.

I've heard many owners say the Trailblazer was the last good vehicle GM made. Some of their flaws I've read about are electrical like the fuel sending unit and the HVAC system is prone to a resistor going bad. But, owners have stated they're easy to work on and quite reliable.

I was about to do the same thing but changed my mind, she never left me stuck anywhere. just got some framework done to her that cost me 1800, and now getting suspension work done which is going to cost me 1300, but I'm fine with that, its a 2006, and that's the most money I ever put in it, and it is still cheaper than a 600 to 700 dollar a month new SUV that i will have to baby and worry about it getting scratched from someone parking next to me opening there door up

@@NoelCo-yd1gu I'm in Pittsburgh PA, I didn't have too get the entire frame redone, just certain parts then they told me to undercoat it with fluid film every Year cause I'm near a rust belt area meaning a lot of our vehicles rust out because of the Weather salt and snow.. The cost of living in California is way more higher than Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, so I can't imagine the type of things they charge you all for and the prices they give you . For 10 grand you can get you a whole new used truck. In Pittsburgh Pennsylvania they won't make no money out of us. If that's what you going to charge we'll just get another truck . And a lot of people know people who work on frames who will do it for a decent price or they will know someone who knows somebody. So they'll hook them up with a deal

The 2007 trailblazer 4.2 engines were rated at 291 horse power and the 5.3 only rated at 300 horse power,but the 5.3 had a lot more torque. Thats pretty good for a six cylinder engine, plus they had 2 wheel drive AWD 4 high and 4 low. I cleaned the throttle body on mine and it felt like a V8.

Scotty is saying something nice about a modern GM truck?! My 2006 GMC Envoy is kicking strong with 190,000 on it. Best put together vehicle I'm ever driven. It's got the 4.2 straight 6 in it and other than some maintenance on it, I've had zero problems with it except I've gone through three shifter cables. I bought it used the day Micheal Jackson died. Good times

I have an 07 Ls Had it for 10 years love it and will have it for many more years. I put a 2 1/2 inch levelling kit inch and a half wheel spacers and went to 265 7017s love it looks great comfortable fits the kids. Daughter just turned 16 going to be hers now

Nice paint on the Chevy also! I got my daughter a 2004 Ford Explorer that runs good and looks good, but it may be a bit too big for her to comfortably drive. That Trailblazer might be a better size for her. My first car was a graduation present in 1972. It was a 1961 Studebaker Lark, inline 6, 3 speed transmission with a Borg Warner overdrive. Cost all of $195.

Scotty I have had several GM products over 45 years and they were all good. I agree that the newer GMs are junk as are many of the new Fords especially the ones with the internal water pump. Agree that Toyota and Honda are overall more reliable but I had my 99 Chevy S-10 with a 2.2 I4 for almost 21 years and a 2008 Isuzu I-370 crew cab 4x4 with the I5 3.7 for 12 years both excellent. I currently have a 2012 Buick Lacrosse that I bought from my neighbor over a year ago with 45k miles for 11k and it is a very reliable car. I am not a GM fanboy but much of the reliability of any vehicle is if you do regular maintenance and drive conservatively. I also have a 2013 Honda CRV AWD and a 2008 Ford Ranger regular cab with a 2.3 I4 with auto and air 101k miles for 3.3k. I do regular maintenance and keep the interiors and exteriors up.

SHOW OFF, I a chevy venture van and an aveo both had many problems nightmares, prior to that a 1991 Ford Ranger great little truck own it for about 13 years. I called my alley cruiser In Chicago (no AC, power steering, automatic transmission and no power brakes)

These things are TANKS. My mom had 1 growing up. I took it over during college then my sister got it but she killed it due to her ignoring our numerous complaints to her about getting an oil change.
