Dan Sawyer bug repellent will change your life. Treat all the fabric liberally. I like to wear a bandana hanging out from under my hat to cover the sides of my face and neck. I don't even wear deet based bug spray on my face and hands anymore wearing Sawyer treated clothes. So effective it's maddening. Causes the insects to basically be paralyzed before they can bite. Works for deer flys too.

One of my favorite spots to hunt is a “pocket within a pocket” , the little open transition areas within a larger bedding area, almost like an inside hub, seems the deer always end up browsing heavy and congregating in those areas I’m assuming because they feel safe and maybe the browse has more variety due to little more open canopy etc and easier to move around vs thicker bedding around it and move more freely etc , depending on access options a lot of times I end up setting up downwind ( or using thermal advantages if possible ) and hunting all day , 20 or so yards depending on what it looks like away from the pocket so anything cruising downwind or going through it can get an arrow , works out even better when you can pair it with some sort of terrain funnel , awesome spot to let a cam soak to especially if your unfamiliar with an area, thanks Dan and all the beast community for all the content over the years !! Hey Dan I’d like you to talk more about how deer bed next to rivers without any oxbows. Maybe certain features to look for at different times of the year? Maybe also where some deer would bed if there is a creek running through a finger ridge. Sorry for the loaded question just trying to get some answers because we usually only get one summer scout per year!

Beavers make those big "ditches" or depressions at right angles to the main creek bed. The deer, raccoons, etc. will all use those, but it ain't the deer that dig those out or wear those out. We call 'em "beaver slides" around here. My uncle has entire canal systems dug out by the beavers in his swamp. I've seen a beaver using the slide in my meadow to drag alders into the creek.

Great video Dan, I just scouted a very similar area yesterday. The bedding I found was along the cattail edge. Like you I need not find any rubs near the beds. As I was walking out they began to appear 300 yards in, around an interior transition. I believe you have seen this before. Our area has very low deer density so I assume this scenario is common. I am excited for this coming season and enjoy your content, it has been eye opening and inspiring. Best of luck to us all this season and hope you feel better. Tom

Wow, 10 day impact to deer movement pattern! Very good to know, I never thought it would be that severe. I can only imagine how hunting activity on public land impacts them…

At the 16 minute mark, you were showing a large bed under a tree/ bush. It looked to me as if there was a shed Antler behind it to the right of the trunk?

Great job bringing the experience to the viewer. I lost count of how many times I swatted my headphones as I heard mosquitoes "landing" on me. Very informative. It didn't occur to me that saturated ground can sometimes exaggerate deer sign

Thanks for the videos keep them coming they are helpful. Regular people hunting regular spots like most of us. I found a killer spot this weekend hundreds of old runs but nothing within the last year or two very strange thick aspen between hardwoods and a creek bottom. Thinking about a ground blind with some shooting lanes similar to your cattail trail approach.👍

Great video Dan/Rick, I like the way you broke it done and showed the sign and the tree you would hunt out of. Would like to see that transferred onto the topo to show treestand location, wind direction you would hunt it on as well as approach trail you would use on that particular wind, especially seeing how area to the right was private and assuming you dont have access. It can sometimes be easy to find sign but getting insight from the BBSK on where to set up, with what wind and how to access would help others like myself better understand how to implement the approach and execution 😁

Dan, these kinds of videos are what drew me to your channel a long time ago. Love the maps mixed in too to hammer home your concepts. I'm not sure I would have kept my composure like you dudes did with all those mosquitos buzzing ya. Ben's 100 works phenomenal and a little goes a long way. Also, a ThermaCell works well especially when you're standing or sitting in one spot for a time.

This past weekend I went scouting on multiply oxbows. My friend didn’t want to go in because he didn’t believe me bucks bed in oxbows. He’s a lazy hunter so I had to convince him where ever you’re NOT willing to go 90% chance bucks will bed there. I went in and just like what Dan showed there’s trails, escape route, lots of beds, plants chewed off and scrapes.

Me and my old man typically hunt between millston and black river. We’ve killed some deer over the years up there but to say it’s been difficult would be an understatement. I’d love to see you do some deer scouting or even hunting videos up there. (Maybe even a public land challenge?) To see how someone like yourself pieces apart the +180k acres of public.

One thing I learned is never put trust in a camera 100% Watched too many big dear skirt cameras too many times and never got one photo of them. And I put my cameras six or 8 feet high and angle them down.

Hey Guys, Really like this video. a good scouting tutorial. Would like to see more like this. Its some of the best stuff out there, Reality hunting !! Personally, I ve seen enough of the celebrity hunting shows over food plots and bagged foods in front of stands and blinds where no one hunts but them.

It’d be a really cool transition if when you hunt this spot later on this year, you edit in some of this scouting footage, no matter if the hunt is successful or not. And I love when you work in trail cam pictures to tell the story as well, even it’s a blurry picture of a possible swamp buck in the background that you may or may not encounter. And then guess as to why he’s there or didn’t show up that day.

This is exactly what I have been looking for as it is exactly like some state land near home. My son and I scouted some last year there and I've been thinking about it and how to approach it ever since.

I put a cell camera out on private Tuesday and had a doe and fawn on cam 3 hours later and then again the next day. Either those public deer are extremely skittish or they’re not using it as much as you think

I def heard that grunt. Might be worth setting up on but lord help you you better play the wind

Trails? Those look like cattle paths! Nettles, mosquitoes...all you need is poison ivy and it's definitely a deer haven.

you know I can relate to this, early spring before the snow left I went out to scout new area, on public land and found some promising sign, set up a camera. went back a month later. tons of pictures. so I decided to go a little deeper. but this time the bugs were deadly black flies were terrible, I just wanted to set it up and get out of there. I set the camera up gps'd my location and left came back a month later. went to my pinned location and nothing. figured a bear got to it or maybe I made a mistake. I went back another 20 or so yards, and came across a stand.. unfortunately I did not see this stand when I set up my camera. if I did I honestly would have looked somewhere else. wasnt impressed that someone actually took my camera they could have left a note, stood in front waved to let me know they were set up there I would have welcomed it and looked somewhere else.. so now I'm out a camera luckily it wasn't an expensive one. so I have decided since I had experienced this for the first time ...this area would be great to put my climbing stand to hunt from. I'm not going anywhere lol..keep up the good videos dan!

Great vid Dan, can't wait to see if there's a shooter in there. Also very curious to see how long it takes for the deer to get back to normal after disturbing the area. I put cameras out on public land June 30th in New York, in an area with no cell reception, won't be pulling the SD cards until September 1st.

I could use some help. I currently hunt heavy ag land where the only deer habitat is pockets and lines of trees along small creeks, and patches of grass where the ground is too wet/soft to drive a tractor over. Pockets of which can be hundreds of yards to miles apart from each other. Im having a heck of a time accessing the land without spooking any deer, it seems no matter what time of day (or night) I head in to set up im blowing out deer, and they don’t return for a few days. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Dan, do you use permethrin to keep ticks off or do you let the opossums take care of them when you get home lol? Do you have ticks in Wisconsin? I was born and raised in Michigan and never seen a tick in my life until moving to the south. Now it's a constant battle with ticks and chiggers.
