Scenes on the Fort William to Mallaig line in the late 1980's. Working from east to west, class 37's are seen on passenger and mixed workings, finishing with the steam hauled Jacobite service at Glenfinnan.

Drove.the 37s many times on the west highland line when I was a fireman out of eastfield traction depot Glasgow. Queens st to Oban loved the 37 best locomotive so much power happy days 1974

Those mixed trains, especially the air-con Mk2 with the tankers on the back, wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it.

What an era! The 80's were great for the variety of traction and quality thrash, I too spent many a time during that period in Scotland, thanks for the memories.

The first shot was useful:I've long had memories of mixed passenger/fuel trains but couldn't find a picture. Many thanks...

Halcyon days, a fantastic era for enthusiasts, great traction and comfortable stock. Didn’t everything seem more straight forward then?

I loved the mixed goods and passenger train at the start. Why not and why not now?

@Mike L Booblay True. I always liked catching the train home with a single car powered luggage van at the back on the Stockport to Buxton line. You had an extra 500 go and it made all the difference

Such long trains in these times, both here and further south. Now only two-car multiple units on many rural lines. Also a wide variety of destinations/services, not as restricted like it feels today.

What a wonderful video! Maybe I saw that long bridge in Harry Potter's movie? The locomotive looks very powerful. I apologise for my shaky English. Best wishes from Italy

That long bridge (Glenfinnan Viaduct) does appear in the Harry Potter movie. I think the bit with the flying car is faked but the bridge and the train are genuine.

Even the Mallaig Line has been marred today by the invasion of Glenfinnan by Potter readers.

It may just be me but it looks like that mk2 Vauxhall Cavalier is racing the 37 around 6 minutes in. Great video

Would anybody know if English Electric's exhaust manifolds were designed by someone with a good knowledge of classical music?

Funny isn't it; I hated 37/4s when they replaced the steam heat 37s on the west highland. How times change.
