Hello scrappers and planet lovers. This video will show you how to get free brass and clean cast aluminum out of bbq gas pressure regulators. I will show you how to safely and effectively separate the metals in order to maximize your profits and divert as much scrappable material away from the landfill as possible.

very helpful video, as always, i've got a few of these regulators and just started breaking them down, those nozzles are usually cast al. so you want to get those too, anywhere from 4-6 on a grill, and they have some nice brass inside them as well, along with the connectors. i usually just hammer those plastic bottle connectors, couple/three hits and they break right off, on the stainless hose you can crimp it inside the brass fitting (with a screwdriver) and it just falls out... those two methods save on your grinding wheels, and it takes about the same amount of time.

No good scrapper ever leaves home without 2 screwdrivers, dykes, channel-locks, claw hammer, vice grip, pry bar, and a knife....more than needed to get the valves too!

FYI, some of the newer regulators can be zinc as well.

Totally agree with you regarding the angle grinder. I go one step farther with the safety and don my leather welding jacket when I am grinding, definitely no short sleeves.

Safety much more important than a little bit of scraps. Thanks for the comment, stay well

Good stuff! I had no idea the regulators were cast aluminum. Just starting scrapping and BBQs seem to be plentiful right now so this will help.

That "rubber thingy" is properly called a diaphragm. Time to get some proper tools! Got a Mastercraft 40 piece socket set at a garage sale for $10 last Sat.....some have combo wrenches too. Seems like a lot of wasted time taking apart those regulators.

I bought some Muriatic acid so I could tell the difference between zinc and aluminum. I tested my cast aluminum and got a reaction. Does this mean it is actually zinc, or that the cast aluminum has some zinc in it? How do I tell?

Do you have a trick to opening these up? No matter how hard I beat them dont seem to open up for me lol resorted to just throwing the piece in dirty aluminum pile

Depends on size of hammer. I find simple hammer not heavy enough. Also want a hard surface underneath. The point is just to get part or the crimp so make sure you have it on its side when hitting.
