I use counter punches for counter sinking nails. They come in different diameters. Made from hard tool steel. They have different shapes and 'cup ' depth. I will make your version for fun! Thanks!

Never heard of those, I'll see if I can find one! Thanks buddy!

@@CutTransformGlue they are for 'tongue and groove' wood to push the nail head into the wood after its hammered in. This helps the wood slot together better. But I use them for rivet texture as well. Cheers!

Most exciting and satisfactory thing in the hobby, is to make your own tools. I don't know about you, but when I finish a dio, I'm happy I'm finally done. But when I finish a tool, I can't wait to make something with it! :D

I totally agree. I love making my own tools, some of them I use several times a day.. so it's super useful! Thanks for watching buddy!

I made something similar. I found putting a slight bevel on tip with a file helps cut into better. But I used a brass tube so I had product to remove. Pen tip prob doesn’t have that much material. Thanks for showing others.

Yeah, I see! I've tried that for bigger ones but they didn't work well..I'm gonna try that again.. Thanks for watching buddy!

The techniques used at each step are very smart, well done. Keep in mind that a drill press has axial load bearings and not radial load bearings, so pushing sideways into the spindle is not really intended. I think as long as you use the sanding drum gently, there shouldn't be any problem.

Thank you so much for your input on the drill press bearing thing... I was worried about that as I was working on it!

@@CutTransformGlue I've done much worse on my own KZfaq channel several years ago by lathing resin pistons. I think you're fine as long as you're sticking to models and light duty work!
@CutTransformGlue
@CutTransformGlue 3 жыл бұрын
Must admit I was thinking about trying to use it for some light lathing , just the other day... Like using a second chuck attached on the bottom with a bearing
@spinafire
@spinafire 3 жыл бұрын
@@CutTransformGlue If you add an extra support bearing on the bottom (opposite of the chuck), then you should be good to go. I ended up doing the same thing with a skateboard bearing recessed into a piece of hardwood. I think a second chuck would help significantly, but it would probably still be an axial bearing and not a radial bearing. For model work, this is probably more than enough.

Nice tool :) I have a similar set up but use the metal valve from a disposable lighter held in an old style clutch pencil.

Oh I see, I've used do that too! But the valves I find in lighters are brass so, I decided to go with the pen nib, since they're steel (I believe)

Go Visit a diamond setter, ask him for his old beaders (used to make the beads/prongs) round. You get sizes from 0.2mm all the way up to 2.5 mm they are also made of steel. I am a diamond setter so I know this, and I have 100's of these lying around!

To clean pen tip, you might use lighter. After burnout all ink, it clean with toothpick. Good idea for tool, but rivets with flat heads looks too boring. I made punch from steel rod, with hemisphere indent, and after light punch with hammer, i have "hided" rivet with spherical head

I use the metal nozzle from a styrene cement applicator to make little rivet indentations in putty - can't see why it wouldn't work on styrene. :)
