Not everyone had cell phones in the mid-90's like they do now, Mary. They were still a fairly new thing and for a long time, they were considered novelty devices and luxury items that only a small number of people owned. So the fact that Billy had a cell phone in his possession right after the killer called Sidney before attacking her made him suspicious.

It also means they miss how terrifying that line was of "I want to know who I'm looking at." In a world without cellphones, you always had the security of knowing anyone you were talking to on the phone was some distance away, especially the kids in this movie who all live in huge houses in the middle of nowhere. The paradigm shift created by cellphones was perfectly captured in that moment -- the person calling you could be *right outside your house* It was definitely a terrifying moment whose significance I think is lost on people growing up when cellphones are ubiquitous.

One of my favorite things about this movie is Matthew Lillard (stu, The second killer) improvised a lot of his lines Wes Craven was so impressed he kept them in like “you fuckin hit me with the phone, dick!” After actor skeet Ulrich mistakenly hit him in the head when he threw it and “my mom and dad are going to be so mad at mmeeee”. Truly one of the best self-aware movies made

@@AstaraBrightwing You understand it, but sometimes something isn't as obvious as you first think it is. Cell phones are on the more obvious side of things, but what's obvious to one person might not be obvious to another. I've seen people watch movies from the 70s and worry that they're getting their DNA all over the place but then realize that DNA testing didn't really start until the mid 80s. My guess is that Mary thought that looked like a fairly small cell phone and didn't fully make the connection about how old this was. It's more obvious when you look at the earlier cell phones looking like building bricks lol.

It cannot be overstated how important this film was for the genre with its meta commentary on past films, characters, and tropes. It really revitalized horror films, which were languishing at the time with either a millionth sequel to something or some super low budget, TV movie. Teen slashers picked up in popularity and the genre was propelled forward into the 2000s with original horror films reaching the big screen. Also, we got many more horror comedies, which is both a thing and what this film is. It may not seem that way to Mary haha, but there’s plenty of funny/goofy moments, including any screen time Matthew Lillard has.

Back when this movie was made, consumer cell phones were relatively new. Many adults didn't even have them. For a teenager to have a cell phone in 1996 would be almost unheard of. Thus, she was suspicious of it.

Give it up for Wea Craven, who made horror movies for decades. In the 70s, he made exploitation films like Last house on the Left and The Hills have Eyes, in the 80s, he introduced the world to Freddie Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street, and in the 90s, he made a commentary on modern horror movies with Scream. Scream is very meta--Craven used many tropes from previous horror movies, even to the point where the characters often reference them. Scream spawned multiple sequels, parodies, and a television series. Great reaction Mary--I look forward to your next video.

To answer your confusion about why they would suspect Billy of being the killer by just having a cell phone is that back in 1996, not everyone had one and especially not teenagers. They suspected the killer to be within the proximity while calling his victims, so a cell made sense. The one plot hole I don't understand, and maybe someone can correct me, is that they later said that the phone calls were coming from her dad, but when Billy was initially arrested, did no one bother to check who's number that was registered to.

10:15 - "Damn, their houses are so big." - Those aren't typical houses for the average American family. 15:37 - "She fingered the wrong guy?" - "Fingered" is mob/gang slang for "accused". It was much common in older movies. 17:22 - "And I haven't washed my hands ever since." - That's ink from when they took his fingerprints (standard procedure for anyone arrested). Ink doesn't wash off easily. 10:20 - The janitor is Wes Craven, director of A Nightmare on Elm Street (among other things), and he's dressed like the killer from that movie, Freddy Krueger. The principal even calls him "Fred". 23:20 - A public curfew in America just means to stay indoors during the time the curfew is in effect. If a parent imposes a curfew on their own children, it typically means to stay in their own house after a certain time, although if they're staying with friends, it could mean to be back in the friend's house by a certain time. 29:32 - "Behind you Jamie!" - The male actor saying that line while the killer is actually behind him, is named Jamie Kennedy. BTW, the sequels are pretty good too. Basically more of the same.

This is a fun reaction to watch. The principal, with the hair fixing - - that's a call back to a legendary TV role played by that actor (Henry Winkler). He played a character named Arthur Fonzarelli (the Fonz) on a show called Happy Days that ran in the 70s and 80s (actually, Ron Howard, the famous director, was on that show as well, along with other actors you may know of). Fonzie was always checking his hair, but then it always looked great so he would just hold the comb up by his head, stick it back in his pocket and say 'ayyyyy'. The janitor is dressed like a character from Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy Krueger. Lots of callbacks and references in Scream.

When Billy says "I think it's time you got over that" everybody is thinking there's no way anyone would be that insensitive. It seems like it's an over-the-top poorly written line. That is until you find out at the end the he's a psycho and actually killed her mom. Then looking back that whole scene and dialogue is completely on-brand. I think Billy forgot his "good boyfriend" act in that moment and was speaking from his heart.

Yes that "popcorn" was a thing. I was fun but like everything else you cook it should not be left unattended. The sneaking in, or out, a window I feel does happen but not nearly as often as the movies portray. And you telling "Mr. Prescott" the "your daughter will be dead if you go away" was... excellent for someone, like me, who knows this movie. Fred, the janitor, is Wes Craven dressed as another murdering Fred... Freddie. Another of his films. Everyone says "she'll never fit through the cat flap" but... she did. too easily. They actually had to staple/nail her sweater to the flap to prevent her from getting through while shooting her attempted escape. This movie is both scary, but self aware and mocking the tropes... even as it uses them. Love the reaction... especially how sometimes you slipped out of talking in English. I don't speak your native tongue, but the fact you were using it... says something about your state of mind in those moments.

Courtney Cox(the reporter) and David Arquette (the young cop) married in real life. Courtney Cox was also in "Commandments," an interesting movie about someone angry at God.

Of course they sneak in. When I was a teen I did that more than once. You do what you have to do, which is why having a daughter now is terrifying.

7:45 Yes, in America (at least in the 90's) we would sneak into our boy/girlfriends rooms at night. That was the "teenage" experience. In America, sex is taboo, but violence isn't.

when everyone leaves at 27:45, they're not leaving because they're scared the killer is still on the loose - they're going to go see his body hanging from the goalpost in the football field because they're sick and immature and think it would be "funny" to see their murdered principal's dead body

1. The fun part is watching everyone overthink who did it.🤣 Thank God for the twist endings. 2. As long as I have a face Tatum has a place to sit 😍😜 3. The Principal is Henry Winkler/The Fonz 4. Gotta love the inept killer getting his ass kicked all the time 🤣 5. In 1996 cell phones weren't prevalent like they are today.

Great reaction, Mary ..... I have made a suggestion to many reactors and no one seems to want to give it a try.... So, I will try one more time and suggest you try Red Planet (great sci-fi movie starring Carrie-Ann Moss (The Matrix) and Val Kilmer).... Hope you will give it a try.... love love your reactions.

Lol 😂... Of course the Phone that dropped out of Billy's pocket strongly suggested that he made the call. It's 1996 Mary, back in that time no one had phones on them all the time :)

That was the early 90's. In the mid and late 90's cellphones were hella common.

Not for high school students. I was in high school when this movie came out. There wasn’t a single student in my HS that had their own cell phone. Some of their parents? Sure. But not the teenagers.

The Scream movies are pretty funny at times because Ghost-Face is far and away the clumsiest killer(s) I've ever seen in a movie franchise 🤣 (not that I watch many horror franchises).

12:51 At the time this came out it was pretty rare to have a cellphone. I didn't get my first until a year or two later and I was in college. So him having one is suspicious.

Tea Tree Oil will kill that cold sore. I got a nasty one when I was a kid, my dads girlfriend put pure tea tree oil on it, next day it was pretty much gone and never got one again.

I don’t think Billy was a suspect JUST because he had a phone, the killer was there, then vanished, then he was there and he had a cell phone back during a time where they were pretty rare. It’s all circumstantial evidence but it does paint a picture. They didn’t have another suspect.

The phone part is confusing. I think she may be in her 20s, she wasn't there in 1996 maybe but it's common knowledge cellphones were quite rare back then.
