Here’s another educational video about screenprinting tee shirts and other fabrics. This video discusses fibrillation and how you might prevent it. Fibrillation usually occurs when you wash a printed garment and the underlying fibers of the shirt come through the print. They appear fuzzy and tend to make the print look faded. However, you can see fibrillation occur immediately after printing in some cases where the ink is over worked or maybe the fabric is too soft. Sometimes the ink can be an issue as well. Here we will discuss fibrillation in detail showing an example and demonstrating a few things that may cause it. In doing so we will also teach you how you can prevent it or even fix it in certain situations. If you have ever wondered about the appearance of fibers in your printed ink surface, then this video is a must see. If you can put up with me talking about it for a little bit, you will learn all about the details and nuances of dealing with fibrillation. Thanks for watching and enjoy!
Don’t forget I offer FREE SHIPPING on screen printing equipment anywhere in the continental US and all crating or boxing fees are included in the pricing! PLUS no sales tax except in California. Enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

So many ways to skin a Catspit...I've been printing white ink on blacks for 15 years. To avoid fiber related issues, I [seal} the print/garment first with a clean light stroke, no flooding. Matter of fact, I never flood the screen like I see you do. This light initial pull give the ink something to stand on and seals the fabric. I then flash and lay on 2-3 pulls (I never push) for final print. I find this to be the best way [for me] to get a nice solid white print without having the ink get too thick. Everyone should experiment and find out what works best for you in your environment and gives you best results. Good stuff Jon...Thanks for sharing.

Usually the thicker the ink, the more need to flood the stencil. But yeah, absolutely. Everyone has their own methodology and ways of printing. I made a video about the fact that there's no wrong or right way of doing screen printing when you're getting great results. YESSSS Triumph Screen Printing!!! i've been printing for 20 years (manually and pneumatically) and i've never understood why anyone would flood a screen within an inch of it's life, as it is done in this demonstration. there are a number of variables that can cause fibrilation that are not mentioned here. the most common i have noticed is when a manual printer over prints the shit out of the garment.... meaning they nearly push the ink through the garment. standard plastisol is not designed for penetration on that level.
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 7 жыл бұрын
Iv'e been printing for about 35 years. Yes, I suppose too much print pressure and repeated printing would be a problem with this. There are many ways to end up with fibrillation. I simply tried to cover the most common for beginners but it's a short video. I also flood off pallet but I never really had problems with this issue. I made the video to help others who may see this. With plastisol ink, which tends to be thicker, we flood the screen to load it with ink. There is very little pressure being used there. Just enough to spread the ink over the stencil and not push it through or "extrude" it through the mesh. With proper off contact and a good screen the ink will sheer as you do your print stroke pulling the ink out of the mesh as it lifts from the substrate behind the squeegee blade as you move through the print stroke. But the bottom line is, as long as you're getting a nice print, there is not wrong or right way. I have seen people do the same thing many different ways. Thanks for watching. Oh no problem. The honest truth is you can't really put everything into 1 video for a certain topic anyway. It would get long and most people like shorter videos. Plus I forget to add stuff sometimes because these are not scripted.... Doh! But it leaves the opportunity for a second video on this topic ;) Why does everyone want to skin cats? LOL...

Thank you!! try a 110 or a 125 mesh screen. Here's a general guide: Use a 28 to 30 mesh count for printing many brands glitter inks. Always check with the manufacturer of the ink about this. This mesh will print a very high volume of ink and have a thick coat of emulsion making it difficult to expose. Use an 85 mesh count for athletic printing, opaque ink deposits, thick puff ink, and some shimmer inks. This mesh will print a very high volume of ink and have a thick coat of emulsion making it difficult to expose. Use a 110 mesh count for heavy coverage on dark shirts, solid under base prints, puff, metallic, some shimmer inks, and for certain transfer printing. This is a great mesh count for high opacity inks on any dark garments. Use a 155 or 160 mesh count for general printing on white tee shirts & under basing on dark shirts, prints on nylon jackets, and thinner silver shimmer inks. Many thinner plastisol inks will print well with this mesh count. Use a 195 mesh count for printing on light colored T-shirts with fine detail, line work or halftones of around 35 LPI. Use a 230 mesh count for printing on light colored tee shirts with fine detail, line work or halftones of around 45 LPI. Use a 305 to 355 mesh count for process color on light shirts, or for overprinting a halftone on a white under base on dark shirts. You should be able to pull of halftones of up to 65 LPI but a 55 LPI is most common. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

Quick question. I had fibrillation on my 100% ringspun cotton shirts. To combat it I switched to 100% ringspun, combed cotton shirts. Will the ringspun, combed be less susceptible to fibrillation?
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 7 жыл бұрын
Anything with a brushed, combed or altered feel knit surfaces may be more prone to fibrillation since there are already fibers raised off the print surface. A tight, smooth knit will print best. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

Hello and thanks for the video. I am in the process of starting my brand and am a bit overwhelmed between the different methods. However, in a Marshalls store I saw a shirt with art that looked very clear and vibrant and yet no paint was felt on the fabric. I have noticed that with the screen method, where the art is printed, it looks like a mass of over-exposed paint on the fabric that tends to turn rigid. I would like to know what kind of method is on that shirt that I saw in the store, the art looked quite printed on the fabric, but it felt very soft and flexible as if the art belonged to the fabric. Any ideas about it? Thanks Again! Nice intro music.

I'm using plastisol rapid cure ink and when I try to reflood my screen, my squeegee feels like it's dried so I feel like my screen gets flooded weird. I try to add more ink but that just causes my ink to get under my mesh and ruin my design. If I scrap the bottom of my squeegee everytime before reflooding my screen then everything is fine again. My ink looks creamy so I don't know if it's the ink or the squeegee that's the issue.
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 2 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say what's happening there working blind from afar but maybe the ink is semi curing in the screen. That's probably a good assumption. Reducers or thinners are not ink so you have to be careful when mixing. Too much additive is not good. They also tend to lower opacity. Yeah, any soft brushed finish garment could be an issue. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Oh yes, that would be a problem. Too much reducer or thinner, soft hand or what have you, and it's no longer ink really. The opacity is ruined too of course. So an HO ink would work well without any additives probably with the flashing method.

@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think that is the case. Over curing will scorch the garment before it will burn the ink. But if the print looks good when the screen comes up, proper flashing should not affect that at all. If you're flashing on press between colors it may be that you are printing on very hot sticky ink or the ink is not flashed enough and is still tacky. So either allow more time for the ink to cool between printing and/or make sure the ink is flashed enough to be dry to the touch. I have videos about both of these topics. You need to increase adhesive on platen, not take it away. Your shirt needs to be stuck to the platen not screen.

Im a newbie, what ink and mesh count would recommend for printing on black tees... I printed yesterday with a low bleed ink and had a fibrillation issue.

With plastisol ink I use the lowest mesh count possible for the artwork. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

What you you mean by flashing?
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 5 жыл бұрын
You know, run out into the street with a tan over coat naked underneath and flash people... LOL.. ;) Sorry I'm a goof. But seriously it means to use a heating panel, which we call a flash cure unit, and dry the ink to the touch so you can print the next print. I have videos showing that. Check out my uploads. Yeah, I'll bet. I'm about to upload a video about that in reference to washed garments and screen printing since I though of it in this video. But I would certainly assume it's the same principle as far as bonding for both plastisol ink and vinyl heat transfers. Thanks for watching.
