Disney and Pixar have put out a whole lot of classic animated films over the years-- but in the past decade the majority of them have been sequels, prequels or spinoffs of their most popular properties. With Onward, they’re making a return to the world of original concepts. They’re bringing us into a world of magic that’s lost its magic, featuring the vocal talents of Star-Lord himself Chris Pratt, as well Spider-Man himself Tom Holland.
Onward does raise some questions though-- like how did the invention of planes lead to creatures not flying down the street, or to reach things on shelves? Why are all their technological inventions human-sized if the creatures are the ones that made them? Why doesn’t anyone consider how the mom character feels? Why does every single road trip movie need an encounter with a biker gang? Why are the Simpsons here?

No halfway decent parent would let their kid go off on an adventure. Killing off parents avoids having kids lie to their parents.

A little late to the party but I just saw the movie. The ending was bittersweet and unexpected, but I think in a good way. Barley needed the closure he never got with their father while he was alive. And it shows maturity on Ian’s part to let his brother have that moment, even if Ian himself never got to really meet his dad like he wanted.

Actually, based on DnD lore he is more of a Sorcerer than a Wizard. Wizard master magic by study whereas a sorcerer inherits magic from bloodline, having been blessed/cursed by a magical being, or having a dragon daddy.

If you look really close, you can see the joy, happiness, and all around life leaving Ryan’s eyes every time he has to say his catch phrase “super easy, barely an inconvenience.” SR is literally pointing a gun at him behind the camera making sure he says it in every pitch meeting.

As a older brother whose younger brother never got my enjoyment of fantasy, a father who loves my son above all else, and a son who lost his father a couple of years ago, this film hit me a few times. It has it's weak moments, but it definitely had an emotional impact for me.

Why didn’t the brothers let the spell expire before using the new Phoenix Stone again? They would have had done a new spell with a full 24 hour time limit. I guess it would be explained if the spell could only be done once per resurrected person. I’m not sure I explicitly heard that though.

Honestly it’s sad to see this movie on rent/buy. It’s super underrated and I think it deserves way more love. It’s in my top 10 Pixar movies, and considering that I’ve seen all of them, it’s high praise on my end.

The movie's phenomenal. Sure, the magic logic is flawed, but it's an animated family movie about two brothers growing up without a dad. It's sad and speaks to a demographic of viewers that haven't seen much representation before.

@@JordanWheeler1999 jeez, FMA is a classic for sure . it's one lf the best animes, but c'mon just seeing it as an insult for no reason. this is a kids movie , this is made for kids . but making it kid-friendly is an insult??? that doesn't have any logic behind. it's just a movie about brothers bond at a very basic level through and through. while fma deals with more adult themes while still being a teenage show . they know what they are. it would be an insult if it mocks the show any way butttt it clearly doesn't
