The independent comics of the 1990s were in a rebuilding phase as the mainstream market grew. One cool self-published comic that came out during this time is the genre mashup Scud the Disposable Assassin by Rob Schrab. This video looks at what Schrab did to make Scud stand out, what elements of storytelling are important to him, the influences found in the book and its overall history.

I met Rob in 1993 at ComicFest in Philadelphia, which my parents took me to. I was a shy 14 year old, and had only been to local conventions previously. Meeting Rob was my favorite part of ComicFest. He showed me the first few pages of SCUD (they were huge), and gave me a sticker and shirt. Unfortunately, SCUD never showed up in my comics store, and then I got out of comics in ‘95. I picked up the whole series on Ebay years later. Nice video of one of my favorite comics.

As a cartoonist and lifelong comic lover I enjoy Chris’ channel because it exposes me to new characters, creators and comics. This episode is a good example of why I support his channel. Scud is also a perfect example of breaking from the mainstream drawing style of capes and six-pack abs, and showing the world that making comics is open to anyone with dedication. Great episode Chris, hang in there, my brother!

Don't forget about the Scud video game on the Sega Saturn from 1997! It had one of the best soundtracks on a game I've ever heard, and one of my favorites! Excellent mix of Alternative, Electro-Industrial, Ska, Punk, Jazz... really crazy mix. 🖤 I played it as a kid and it was my first exposure to Scud- I didn't even know it was based on a comic until YEARS later.

Then a couple years later Schrab decided to finish the story and I finished it with my dad by my side. This and the Maxx are the greatest Indie comics of all time IMO

I first became aware of Scud when I was 12 and went to a comics convention that was in the lobby of a hotel in down town Kenosha, WI. It was literally a room with maybe a dozen or so collectors and their long boxes selling back issues out of their collections. The only creators that i remember being there we the guys making Scud and I'm pretty sure I got a Scud sticker at this convention from them. I can't remember if I got the first issue though. Even though that convention didn't grow into something bigger it's still pretty cool to have gone to it and seen such a grass roots event being put on by people that just loved comics.

I agree that Tick, Cerebus, Bone and Madman were probably the most visible "independent" comics at the time (I guess you can also count Beanworld since Larry Marder was brought on to Image to give them some cred) but there were still plenty of independent publishers putting out some great stuff: Chaos Comics had Evil Ernie and Lady Death, Malibu had Dinosaurs for Hire, Kitchen Sink had Omaha and Black Hole, and my personal favorite Slave Labor Graphics had Milk and Cheese, Caffeine and Ariel Schrag's books. It was also the time when Drawn and Quarterly was really ramping up with: Optic Nerve, Eightball, Peep Show, Jimmy Corrigan, Berlin, etc. And I guess Fantagraphics is the most well-known independent publisher today due to their award winning Peanuts and Disney reprint books. I'm not sure if I'd call it a "rebuilding" phase since it was really mainstream comics that collapsed leaving the field wide-open for the independents in the late 90's-2000's.

Sarah Silverman once said, "Most people wipe from front to back. Rob Schraub wipes from side to side". On another note, I had a friend from my hometown who had a good deal of success on Channel 101. His name was JD Ryznar and his show was called " Yacht Rock". It has inspired a whole genre labelling music by the same name.

I ran across Scud in the 90's and it always had its hooks in me. Years later I was finally able to pick up the Whole Shebang, and I can say without hyperbole that it's my favorite comic. It's silly, it's sweet, it's frantic, it's insane, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Then again, you'd expect a guy with a Scud tattoo to be somewhat biased.

I loved Scud when I was a teenager! My friend, John, got a second printing of issue #1, and we’d read it over and over. We liked the idea and look of him so much, yet we didn’t own any more issues. Our town’s comic book store closed around this time, so any comics we got was from a book store, which was only the big two publishers. That was also the reason why I stopped reading Spawn: I just couldn’t find the issues. But it definitely is a series of like to go through.

I just wanna say. Scud is my favorite comic of all time. I pre-ordered the collected Image book immediately when it was announced, as it was $30 to the softcover's $20. Several weeks after it was supposed to have been released, I was informed that not only was my book delayed, I had been downgraded to softcover as the hardback price had been jacked up $20 due to buzz, but I could pay more for the fancy one... like I had already decided to do. Being poor and already having splurged on the purchase, I declined. I have occasional bad thoughts about the people who made this decision back in '08. Thank you for listening to my rant about capitalism.

This was one of the most interesting videos I've seen on this channel. I'm so ignorant about comic books in general but always wanted to get into them. Shows like this are a window for casuals like me to look into and see clearly what is out there I might really enjoy. This comic in particular has really grabbed me. Love the style and humour. Also I can't help but want to colour that entire comic. The strong yellow really leaps off the page making it easier to see through this guys art style. The Black and white pages are harder to see. But maybe that's because I'm watching on a computer. It would probably be very different holding it in your hand. What the heck. My comment is so long no ones going to read it anyway so I'll add that I bet in the near future it will be possible to use A.I to colour in comics. Googles can already colour photographs perfectly to look completely realistic so I bet it could do comics too.
