Here's a timelapse video of sculpting stylized character Faye based on concept by Ross Tran. In this video I'm learning more about translating a 2D painting into a 3D model. In this process I focused myself on the art of sculpting. I hope you guys can learn something trough this videos. I would say that this is definitely not one and only workflow for sculpting characters, but it's effective for learning structure, volume, forms and details.

I did a sculpting study of a stylized character sculpture of Faye based on painting by Ross Tran. Everything is sculpted and modelled in Blender, vertex paint/polypaint done in Zbrush, rendered in Cycles, final images composited in Photoshop. If you have any feedback please just let me know. q i I consider myself decent at drawing and my first practical sculpt won me a gold key in scholastic awards. And one thing I saw was the difference of 2D and 3D. I know the process well enough. :)

For those wondering how to make a high-poly object look transparent so you can see your reference, the shortcut is alt + z.

In my case it's actually the opacity of the image in the camera background images settings.

Thanks! I believe the video cover lighting and rendering in the last part except the compositing. I already made a separate video on how I render my sculpts, although it's a bit outdated now

watch with playback speed at 0.25 so you can closely watch the process and so the music sounds like you're receiving data to your brain.

How do you put the wireframe box around your sculpt? I'm a beginning sculptor and that looks like a very handy way to build a reference guideline. I know how to make boxes in general. I'm curious what you're doing to make yours.

Make it only display wireframe and then just reposition it to match the general size of the head. It's pretty handy indeed.

Wonderful work!! I'd like to know how do you set the Dyntopo? I'm a beginner of Blender, and I find that I always can't get enough detail in eyelid area, but when I turn on Dyntopo, the computer become sooooo lagging...

I pretty much just turn it on when I need more geometry. Use brush with the strength of 0 and just stroke it on region that need geometry. And then turn it off after that.

I have a problem, when I rotate the object, I don't want the reference image to rotate with it, is there a way to do it?

idk...but I guess if the reference is separated from the object, you can select only the object and rotate it?

Yes you can parent the image to the object ctrl p I think

@@CGLife Thank you, maybe my English is not good enough and the expression is not accurate enough. I want to rotate the perspective without rotating the reference image, like zbrush's "texture”-“load image" does. The reference image for blender is now similar to zbrush's "paint" - "front-back/up-down/left-right"
