I think the people already labeling Celebrini as "generational" are totally out to lunch or they just wanna feel hyped up about something. He barely did anything for his team at the World Juniors compared to what Bedard did, there's no good reason to assume he's gonna be even close to as impactful of a player as Bedard.

@michaelcopper613 He's not generational, but he is a seriously impressive 1st Overall Pick. The only first overall picks better than him in the last 10 years are probably McDavid, Matthews, and Bedard. He's comfortably in a tier with Hughes and Dahlin.

@@QRM00 also, Hughes played in the USHL in his draft year, which is a much worse league than the NCAA where Celebrini played... I remember an interview from 2 yers ago where Hughes said he probably should've played a year in NCAA after being drafted instead of going straight to the show... his rookie year was bad sooo, you could argue Celebrini is actually better than Hughes was when Hughes was Celebrini's age .. but, only time will tell.

@@jeffe2267 So glad you said that, the cancel culture on Mitch Marner is hard at work and very sadly, Steve has decided to join in, all one needs to do is look at Steve Stamkos and Steve Yzerman's past to see when they blossomed into difference makers, when they finally had proper support. Right, so we're realizing that cap increase doesn't necessarily mean you can improve your team with the new money. Minimum, maximum, and everything in between will scale up, in addition, ALL other teams will have the same extra money! So you're left with essentially the same buying power you had. You have to improve your team in other ways.

So what I learned from this episode is that the Leafs should blow it up or lose Marner for nothing. The core 4 contracts have skewed the salary cap percentages to a point where they are irredeemable. The top 4 have proven they can’t get it done themselves. The Leafs can’t surround them with better players because of how much they make. When JT’s contract is done Steve explained how it doesn’t matter. Best case is somebody gives the Leafs something for Marner but I don’t see it happening without retention. Most likely Marner walks during the off season and the Leafs try and spend whatever money they save on a top flight D. Except those aren’t available very often and that’s another wasted year of Mathews.

I love your playoff and off-season podcasts (not a Leaf fan, so I start when the Leafs season ends), and the inside voice rant about cap space is maybe my favorite thing you’ve done. I feel like you’ve had a loud rant about this before, but inside voice drives home how ridiculously the team is built and the contrast to other teams is a decent blueprint to understanding how the cap works for and against teams. And you’re right about the HHOF. What a f’ing joke

It's just like real world. Your salary goes up, but so does the price of everything, so you're in fact earning less, because of inflation. Same goes here. The cap is going up, but so is the price of 3 guys, so you're even worse off than before. The percentage is humongous. Over 50 % of the cap. Yikes. Boo hiss and everything, get rid of it. Though I'm not really sure who would take the bait with just 1 year left. And no one is getting Tavares.

On that Woll debate, it's weird for Adam to be the one coming in idealistic and Steve is explaining the realistic, on-the-ground scenario as to why an undesirable behavior might be best, given constraints.

When they first showed Brad's video, I thought he was Al Bundy. Cap space? The Leafs pay extra to get anyone to play in Toronto. Mind you, I'm not bought-and-paid-for, nor am I contractually obligated, so I'm free to laugh at the Kool-Aid peddlers.

You also probably understand what it takes to be a winner, which is more than I can say for most Leafs fans that seem to want the same comfort food of empty regular season cardio numbers and no playoff success. The Leafs front office and ownership seems to want that too, so maybe those fans want a job working for the Leafs to keep with the trend.

The equation is flawed if you don't take the 4th highest paid player into account. Lose Tavares enter Rielly at 7.5m to maintain a "core 4"

I have a feeling this season is going to be brutal. Marner resigns. Bertuzzi and maybe Domi walk. Woll and Jones tandem in goal, if they can stay healthy. They struggle to get 20 players. Wait for Tavares contract to drop and let him walk or resign him for way less. Probably miss the playoffs. THEN start doing things to build. The window is going to be closing awful quick with a wasted year this season.

They can actually reopen the window if they miss the playoffs at some point, they need a Youth movement again, and they don't have one coming. Every good team has a several youth movements and a retool year to keep their window open. Leafs haven't had that yet bc they keep going into win now mode while Tavares is still good. Means they never give young guys a proper chance too so they can't see what they actually have in guys.

The big difference between Mogilny and a lot of the other big Russian stars of his time is that Mogilny not only didn't schmooze with the Russian Mafia, but he testified against them when they tried to shake him down (wanted Mogilny to pay $150K or he would be shot and stabbed). It must have made for some awkward tensions in the Vancouver dressing room when he there at the same time as Bure, who got run out of town because the team got sick of the mobsters he was hanging out with.

My #1 argument against state tax being an issue for the Leafs is that Leafs players, above all others, get significant ad deals when they are doing well and are well liked. If Noel Accari, who spent half a season with the Leafs, got an ad deal, you can find a way to add income in Toronto

The new Ownership Management is not short term. I could see them directing Player Personnel to let this "experiment" play out. Get what you can for Marner or let the contract expire, along with John Tavares', all the while looking for that ten-million-dollar RD. (not a re-signed 14 million RW ) Not a re-tool on the fly. But like Steve suggests, a re-design on the fly. If John wants to finish here, give him a low cap, 2-year, contract to retirement. He is invaluable to the dressing room, and probably wants to bring a Cup back to Toronto more than we realize. That's what Montreal should have done with Markov. That kind of math allows much more flexibility. Remember. New Ownership Management.

Hronek wasnt going to open market he was an RFA. And let’s be honest he was gong to get 5.5 or less had he not been traded to the Canucks where he got to play with the best defensemen in the league. Quinn Hughes took Luke Schenn whose career looked done and got him a multi year 4 million dollar contract by making look like he could still play.

The reason skinners getting bought out is because he SUCKS when he doesn’t have an elite center, and this year the Sabres had him on the third line, and they have no room for him getting top line minutes with his defensive problems. I don’t know how I feel about the buyout, but that’s why they’re doing it

The Leafs goaltending development was killed by losing 4-5 goalies off waivers over the last 6 years or so, due to bad roster and salary cap management. After hiring the Canucks farm team goalie coach last season, Toronto should give serious thought to including Sanford at the draft table to go looking for goalies in the last three rounds of this draft, the way the Canucks do with Ian Clark. There is definitely an elite goalie shortage in the NHL, which is mostly to blame on Hockey Canada for doing a terrible job supporting goalie development, which would have been a better use of millions of dollars than paying out all that hush money over the years. The one thing Treliving did to start to turn the Leafs around was to do more team building in the offseason and not flip half the roster over at the deadline. They didn't even trade their 1st round draft pick. It's still painfully obvious, as it obviously pains Steve Dangle, that until the Fab 4 Forwards are broken up there is no way to build a proper team for the playoffs, because they can't afford depth, a competitive defence corps, or improve their goaltending.
