I'm sorry but Jesse is wrong. If you score 4 goals in a game, you absolutely got a hat trick. If a player has scored 3 goals halfway through the game, they have gotten a hat trick. Scoring the 4th goal later on doesn't negate the fact that the player got a hat trick. We don't wait to throw our hats on the ice until the end of the game, as soon as that 3rd goal goes in its hat trick time. And we don't all go get our hats back if the player scores another one after that. For any achievement that is judged instantaneously, Jesse is wrong. For any achievement that is judged at a set time, Jesse's argument works. For the baseball analogy, we judge what happened at the end of the play. If you got a home run, we don't say you got a single, double, triple, and home run because those aren't things you achieve as soon as you cross the base, they are decided after the play is done.

the best equivalent is golf. If you get an eagle on a hole, you don't say you got a birdie AND an eagle, you got an eagle. You no longer got a birdie. The problem is, we don't have a name for 4 goals, so its all a moot argument.

I've never understood the NHL's obsession with Meruelo as an owner. It's been nothing but organizational failure after organizational failure since he's had the team. Remember, the Coyotes didn't choose to leave Glendale -- Glendale kicked them out. Delinquency on state taxes, the prospect testing scandal, getting massively outspent campaigning for the Tempe arena, this hotel bill thing.... When all of this is happening, it has to come down to the guy at the top. If the NHL comes back to Phoenix under Meruelo it's just gonna fail again. If they find a different owner, they've got a chance.
@PDXKing99
@PDXKing99 2 ай бұрын
If I’m them I’d talk with the Suns owner again, I know he didn’t want to buy the team but that could be because of Meruelo being untrustworthy. Hockey can work in Arizona especially with how popular it is in youth hockey but they can’t put their faith in Meruelo and company to redo this in 5 years

Steve hit the nail on the head regarding the Coyotes ownership. As a Coyotes fan from Phoenix (yes we exist) I don't know a single person who would ever trust THIS ownership group again after they lied directly to our faces, nor would any fans support them after years of being told, "Just wait. Everything will be good soon." & then having the rug pulled out from under us. Absolute betrayal!

It's crazy that consecutive headlines we discussed on this episode were "Alex Meruelo gets first dibs on the next expansion" and "The Coyotes haven't been paying their hotel bills." How is this guy allowed such privileged status, let alone part of future ownership consideration at all? It's a clown show franchise and he's the head clown. He's been in charge of the entire sharp end of the organization's decline, from when they got kicked out of Glendale for not paying rent through the failed Tempe referendum to where they are now. Who has jerked around this fan base and this market more than him? For all I hear about how good Bettman is at picking owners, how he always wants to be in the right market with the right owner, this is his man?

@INMATEofARKHAM

Not even theory, a number of double hat tricks have been scored in the NHL. The most recent was Darryl Sittler in 1976. Red Berenson did it in 1968 (which is crazy as he only scored 261 goals in 987 games played). Everyone else did it back in the early days... and the game isn't at all comparable. (Hell, not sure 1976 is truly comparable to the modern game, but you at least recognize it as the same sport.)

As someone who has been watching hockey twice as long as Jesse has been alive, when someone scores a hat trick they always announce it as a hat trick and the hats rained down. That is an accomplishment that is celebrated FOR WHAT IT IS right at that moment FOR WHAT THE ACCOMPLISHMENT IS ( A HAT TRICK )!!! It is an event in time that doesn't get erased if the player scores another goal - or more. Even after the game is long over it gets described, numerous times, as so and so scored a hat trick and added X more. A more interesting argument is what special name do you give to a four goal night? A five goal night? A six goal night? Silly Jesse.

To further counter Jesse's point about "not a 50 goal scorer". When people retroactively look at player point totals season per season. You say x player had 5 100point seasons even if those totals were 101 125 135 110 100. So yes. Matthews' season is a 50 goal season and it is also a 60 goal season.

Can everyone tell Jesse the NHL credits players with a hat trick that score 4 goals

Hey Jessie! Are 20,000 fans wrong if they throw their hats on the ice when a player scores their third game in a game to celebrate their hat trick? Should the team give back the hats when the player scores a fourth goal in that same game? Sorry but you're wrong on this one...

Nathan Bastian (Rempe) and Michael McLeod (Hockey Canada) were their "middleweights". Not enough but they did have a couple. Also Brendan Smith is a middleweight.

If Steve got jacked and just parked in front of the net, I'm fairly confident McDavid could get Steve his goal. If Edmonton had to play with 4 players on the ice with McDavid and an orange cone that's just outside the crease, I'm fairly confident that orange cone would have one goal in an 82 season. Surely, Steve is better than an orange cone.

They keep talking about Steve playing as if it would be 100 different games. It wouldn't; it's the same game, replayed, with him in the same shape he began in. He would know exactly where the skaters and puck would go, exactly what position the goalie would be in, given enough restarts. I've got him knowing how to get the slowest breakaway of all time in 30 games, scoring in 40.

At four goals that is a hat trick plus 1. That is how it always has been
