This summer, you’re invited to Portorosso. Disney and Pixar’s Luca is streaming June 18 on Disney+.
Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Disney and Pixar’s original feature film “Luca” is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface. You’ve gotta appreciate the fact they use actual raytracing (not the kind Nvidia uses in games, of which is a mix of raytracing and rasterization) and they have to generate every frame. This process can take a long time, but it’s worth it in the end.

This is a life changing career animation for Pixar. The texture, details, and of course the story. This is the kind animation which is unique and nostalgic compared to previous Pixar films over the years.

If you're going to accuse Disney of plagiarizing anything, accuse it more of plagiarizing Madeleine L'Engle's A Wind In The Door. In both stories, a girl (Raya / Meg Murry) meets a dragon (Sisu / Proginoskes) that teaches her that, in order to help save the world from being ravaged by dark entities (Druun / Echthroi), she must learn to get along with a character she despises and appreciate them for the nice things they do. (Naamari / Principal Jenkins) The heroine's team also includes two boys (Boun and Noi / Charles Wallace and Calvin O'Keefe) and a Goliath-type guy. (Tong / Blajeny) PS. But then again, they're the same company that made two movies based on A Wrinkle In Time, so a Wind In The Door movie probably wouldn't be far beyond their rights.
