Sealing RV Roof with Eternabond Tape
Sharon, one of the Two Tired Teachers, is going to put Eternabond on our RV roof. Her first tip is to overestimate what she will need. She started with a 50' roll of 4" and a 50' roll of 2". She used all of the 4" and most of the 2."
Before you start to seal the roof with Eternabond, you will need to clean the roof. Sharon used a bit of Dawn dishwashing detergent and a medium bristle brush to get the roof clean.
Three tools she used were a roller, a screen roller, and a box cutter or X-acto knife. In an effort to thoroughly clean the areas where she would be taping, Sharon used alcohol wipes.
Sharon covered the endcaps on the back of the RV simply because she wanted to be certain the Eternabond Tape held. She is doing this job because when she inspected the roof last year, she noticed that the dicor sealant needed to be patched. This year she saw that the dicor was really cracked. She wanted to repair it before it became a major problem.
On some of the videos Sharon watched, the men making this exact same repair said it took around 3 hours. As a woman, Sharon simply doesn't have the upper body strength or hand grip of a man. Sharon worked between 9 and 10 ours to tape our 21' 11" Micro Minnie.
Putting the Eternabond Tape on is keeping the RV well sealed. The cracks would eventually lead to leaks on the roof.

Three things I love best about your videos are: 1. I love to learn new things and y’all teach me! 2. I love that you are willing to inspire me so I can do the same thing with my 1999 motorhome as an older single woman. 3. Watching your videos and learning how to do things myself allows me save money. I am a school social worker so every dollar saved is one I can put towards my son’s college education and my travels 😊. Your videos are a ministry and much appreciated.

Great work! What year model is your Minnie? Do you use a folding ladder or extension ladder to get on the roof? Does it feel fairly stable when you are on it? I need to get up on my roof but my ladder is about a foot shy of reaching the top. A little shy about getting up there without a taller one. I am so proud of you all doing all the work on your RV! :)

The recommendation is that you inspect the roof twice a year. If you find any dry calk, clean it with rubbing alcohol. We have seen RVs that have had the Eternabond tape on for 8 years and counting. If you find places where the tape or calk is beginning to come unsealed, those should be replaced.

Great job! I’m thinking of doing this to our truck camper roof. It is 4 years old and the dicor is just starting to get brittle. It’s been stored inside. I’d rather spend more money upfront and have a better seal and less work as I get older. How long do you think this will last?

Is there a recommended temperature for applying eternabond? I live in Minnesota and it is between 45°-65°daytime temps. Thanks.
@TwoTiredTeachers
@TwoTiredTeachers Жыл бұрын
Sorry, but we live in Texas and can't help much with cold temperatures; however, I think 65 to 70 should be fine. Your best bet would be to see what, if anything, the product itself says about the temperatures.

Good job on applying it. It’s no easy task. But once this bond fails it will be a nightmare to remove. It’s better to just reseal areas that are bad with the appropriate sealant. This type of roof tape is only meant for temporary roof patches with the edges sealed.

Hopefully you never have to repair or replace the vent covers because you will never get them off now. If you ever need to replace a broken or cracked vent, you will destroy your roof trying to pull off the eternabond tape. Taping the seems is good but not around all the vents.
