This video is a companion piece to my recent 'Protect your Highlights' video. Choosing to exposure images by preserving your highlights means you will create more shadows in your images, but if we accept this limitation we can embrace the shadows and use them to create more interesting compositions and tell better stories with our images... and maybe this is true for life as well.

The Lord of the universe came off his throne and came to be with horrible, sinful people like you and me, who are consumed by their sin and even though he committed no crimes he took you death sentence on your cross to pay for your sin because he loves you. So that if you repent of your sins, trust and believe in him, you will have new life (heaven) through him and your sins will be forgiven. He will also give you the Holy Spirit to live inside of you (the litteral presence of God) to guide and help you. He also offers you a relationship with him. Today it helped me reaffirm my photography goals. I see it all differently, and it only took a few minutes of video to realize I caused my own frustrations by not letting the light and the dark be my tools. I too wanted to see it all in my images. You're right. This will be a KZfaq classic for others like me who are still on their learning journey.

I stand up for Sean. When I put on a Sean Tucker video, I get up. I walk around, listening intently. I pace, I think, I nod. Well timed, as I just lost my father a few days ago, and was thinking about the last major trauma in my life, and how that fueled some amazing photography. I've always said that you can't create without darkness, and indeed much of this world's most beautiful art came about as a result of a deep sadness. Photographers tend to go on and on about light, but shadow is what gives light meaning.

This is so meaningful Sean. I love that you are not "only" an incredible photographer but also a wonderful filmmaker, and how you utilize both to tell your story. At the same time you show us how we might apply these ideas to our own story as a means of growth. You help us THINK and FEEL into our work as creators, which is to say, as humans. We don't know any better at first; we try to avoid feeling some things. But you express so beautifully that we create ourselves by allowing it, by giving ourselves permission to fail and to feel. And then we can create something that represents the human that we are becoming and the way we perceive our world. And then we can SHARE it, and authentically so. By creating. And in doing so we discover our own language that just maybe can bring the world a little closer. It's so inspiring, healing even. You are doing good here on many levels Sean. Thank you very, very much for sharing, and thank you for bringing the world a little closer with each of your videos.

Among all the photographers/KZfaqrs around here, the first video I've seen from you had a different feeling. I knew there were something different : in your voice, in the way you presented your tutorials. After watching many other videos from you, I know what it is : emotion and sincerity. The simple speech you had about having shadows in your life and the reference to Carl Jung made me understand that you make your videos with sincerity and emotions, while so many others give their videos a happy, fun and click-bait style just for the views. Don't get me wrong, I understand where they go from this but the type of videos you provide are way more my style. So thank you and keep going. Your content is amazing.

Apart from sharing the technical aspects and artistic choices you make while creating your art, It's great that you mention cinematographers and photographers to research and draw inspiration from. We are told to chase the light so the way you exposure for your Photos is on the right path. When I see artistic nudes they don't care about pure black in the shadows. So I agree with you. We don't see with our eyes, we see with our brains. It's the brain that gives meaning to an image. Actually human eyes are very limited, but versatile. We don't see the whole picture with detailed highlights and shadows. Just like you would do with your camera, you have to focus on one spot and make adjustments to really see the detail in those areas. In fact, we don't see the whole picture at all. Instead, we see a focused point in the middle of a blurry image, and we just do unconscious panning in a given scene and automatically form a mental panorama. In the end, photography is an iterpretation of reality. Just like everyone of us see the world in a slightly different way depending on our nature, our mood, we can also use the camera as a tool to see the world in a particular way to convey very different moods and feelings, because it's not a matter of just understanding it, it's a matter of feeling it We all have to live with our shadows, it's up to us to decide what we want to do with them. You clearly decided to do something very productive and valuable with yours, and because of that you have my respect, admiration and appreciation (and my best regards)

One series shown on UK television that really embraces shadows is Endeavour - the life of Inspector Morse in his early years. The lighting is kept extremely dim. On the philosophical side of your video, I totally agree and embrace your philosophy. Thank you for sharing this.

Incredible video Sean. Another good (if not better) example when turning to cinema would be Gordon Willis' work. He essentially pioneered this idea of darkness within film with his work on the original Godfather. Once the producers and studio heads saw the dailies you could only imagine their shock, no film ever before threw the actor's eyes into shadow, you had to see their eyes. Once the film premiered and everyone realised it was a masterstroke, he was later given the title "the prince of darkness" by legendary cinematographer Conrad Hall changing cinema forever.

This is a philosophy that I’ve lived by even before I got into photography. Our shadows are the things that define each and every one of us in this thing called life. In my opinion, there’s more beauty to be found in the darkest shadows than in the brightest highlights. 🖤🤍

Sean, what a strong video...Some tears just showed up. You should write a book, you explain photography beyond the technical stuff, that honestly I believe is the most real and powerful thing about life and living as an artist, someone who express feelings and emotions in a most beatiful way.

Great video - as a serious amateur photographer and a retired Ph.D. psychologist I can appreciate this on both levels. I don't know how I missed this video when you made it years ago, but I was so glad to discover it today. Thanks - it is really terrific!

This Video indeed was a therapy for me in a Covid -19 lockdown in Melbourne Australia. Starting to learn photography and your tutorial thought me so much to think about and how to look at things around me, that surpassed what I have learnt in the past 6 months via Zoom. Thank you Sean.
