In this video I share a quote by musician John Mayer where he said, "Get small and tell the truth," and why this simple idea had such a positive impact on my creative journey; helping me getting rid of the gimmicks and begin to put the message first in my work.

In the overhyped, and overly loud world of CeleBroTographers spamming clickbait and breathless gear reviews I keep coming back here for the authenticity, the simplicity, and the honesty that Sean puts into his work and into his message.

While I get where you’re coming from, bashing the “bro” photographers still isn’t cool. Those guys can be just as passionate as Sean, they just express themselves differently. Introverts are always so quick to bash the extroverts.

@@-AtomsPhere- I'm highly extroverted, and I find them to be incredibly annoying. They're high on hype (and with their salaries, who wouldn't be), and a tad short on authenticity. They're also professionally rich and famous enough to take a little flak on the internets.

As an art educator, I have great appreciation for his little talks. He speaks to the why… why we take photos. The contexts of the images… it’s much more nuanced and cerebral. Anyone can do a how to… or a equipment review… this is much more critical in its thinking.

@@Buttercup697 I disagree with you that anyone can do a how to or an equipment review. At least in an entertaining and informative way. My favorite review channel is Philip Bloom. Philips style is the peak of artistic expression and it’s in service of review videos. That’s something I live about Sean’s channel though…it’s just as much about the art of photography as it is about tutorials.

My man Cody Blue! You are both creators I admire and from who I have learned so much in the past months (Sean and Cody). Been trying to stick to my A6000 and not feel "left behind" with these new models of cameras which I can't afford right now and instead, shifting my attention to the craft itself in my own channel. Thank you so much for the inspiration! Greetings from Mexico!

Thank you Sean. The quote " Get small and tell the truth" is beautiful and describes it perfectly in my eyes. If we don't take ourselves too seriously, only then the world around us can really have an impact on us and we get a different perspective on it. I think that nothing gives us more lightness than the truth and that is certainly another factor that increases the quality of our photos.

"No more gimmicks, no technique, no more tricks to hide behind". This resonated so deeply with me at this point in my creative journey. I strive to simplify and in doing do, began to see power in the connection, in the truth of the image. Such an important message.

In handweaving, there is a tendency to buy fancy equipment in order to do complicated techniques. But when I look at the finished cloth, it is the weavers using the most simple tools - usually, random sticks picked up off the ground, that weave the most complicated and most beautiful cloth. Simple tools allow the maker to use their hands and mind to make their vision real instead of being lost in the latest toys and technology. What you say here resonates. I'm going to share this with my weaving students.

It's hard to implement this idea on the shoot with a client who is there to show off his/her cloths. Love to know that there is community who is not all about that. Thank you for keeping this community sean!

I had to stop part way through at my excitement of you doing line & wash drawing. My main creative output is done with drawing and painting, usually with pencil, pen and watercolor and photography is kind of this side hobby or medium for creating that I really enjoy. I find there is so much you can gain by using mediums outside of your preferred one to help expand your knowledge and insight into how to express and create. Not to mention the lessons learned that you can take from one to the other. Photography for me is a place where I don't have to worry about mixing colors or drawing something correctly, instead my focus becomes solidly on form, composition, and just picture making in general. I can take those things and apply them to my drawing and illustration. Anyway, really cool, so awesome to see you doing that, it's a wonderful hobby taking the time to draw from life and will only benefit you. :) Thanks for all the great content too, I've shown many people who are painters and illustrators and not photographers your KZfaq channel because I think there is always something to be gained from it regardless of preferred creative medium. Cheers

In this moment I am writing my Phd thesis, and I have quoted you in the introduction (I took quotes from your book). What you are saying is really true, and for this I am doing an autoethnographic work, to stay closer to a truth, that is based on my own experience. This is to say that since it will be impossible to give a "universal" truth, it is better to be honest and offer one truth, among many. Like Foucault said, one can write a book to aim an universal truth, or writes a book based on experience. Experience that help you to stay simple.

I have felt this so strong for the last two years. What can I do with as little as possible to share the story I want to communicate? The biggest problem has been the focus, how to a specialize with confidence that I won't get frustrated, and am I disciplined enough to take however long it takes to fully tell the story, complete the large scale project, like a book, or an installation, or a gallery? I honestly am not motivated by money or others praise at all, either that or I am afraid of it. I am only motivated by doing something that will truly make a difference, even if it is only for my family. I am currently in an internal dialogue with my self to realize I have to make money to do what I love and that is not a bad thing, it will help me achieve the goal. Thanks for sharing with us this week. Great stuff.

I’m a 67 year old retired professional photographer. I always reminded myself that the subjects of my photography were more important than me. Trying to keep my ego out of my work was a constant challenge. Do your best to use all of your skills, and your vision, to tell your subjects story. Your story will appear, in time, if it is meant to be.

Sean, ironically, I ran across your channel because I was researching gear! The GRiiix to be specific. After watching the first video, I have now watched 5. I so much appreciate your work, candor and encouragement. The encouragement to find out what message is coming from within me, of allowing my style to emerge from my core, and to continuously learn and grow and then share that growth. Those messages imparted a whole new way of thinking about photography and my artistic journey. I very much appreciate the time and effort you have put into your videos. They have certainly had an impact on my journey. In that way, I hope this note encourages you to keep going. Your messages are having an impact. Thank-you!

Fascinating, because over the last few years I have come to terms with the fact that my photography, especially my urban geometry/abstract architecture photos, are not mainstream and not (usually) very popular, even among many photographers. Even my street and portrait work are often not popular, either, yet often garner praise from a few who practice our art form. That said, in my limited time as a photographer, I won a big CA state award and had my work featured in a small publication and do have "fans" among photographers and others, and have had several great small photo collection and portfolio reviews. I share this because there is no deep "meaning" in my photos other than sharing the beauty i see and how I see it, in my individual way that, I think takes the structure out of architecture. And not having a wide audience is okay, in great part because I am part of a community of photographers and artists who are supportive and who nourish my desire to learn more. I love the photography I do, love the full process, and enjoy (and joy is the key here) learning more and more about this art form, including watching your videos and reading your book. (Really like reading ti, which I find is kinda like reading Pema Chödrön or Gary Zukov.) Anyway, thank you for yet again making me think and rummage through my photographic heart and soul.

Again a just wonderful video, Sean! You are already a really - I mean really good photographer and I enjoy seeing you grow since almost the day you started the channel. But what sets you apart is your ability to communicate deep philosophical insights, which are applicable not just to photography, but to life in general. You have had a way greater impact in my life than I would have expected you to have when I first subscribed to your channel. In teaching humanities and philosophy through photography - I think - you have found your calling. The way you grew up was quite unique and it certainly wasn‘t easy. But it made you unique and gave you more valuable and deeper insights than most of us received with a more traditional upbringing. Why the church let such a talent go will always remain a mystery to me. Thank you for enriching my life! Joerg

I’ve known the things you say in this video for years but... I’ve still given in to the temptation you talk about. I’m a musician and I’ve always loved raw, unpolished music that does away with bells and whistles for the sake of communicating beauty and... I guess, yeah, truth. Or rather authentic expressions of emotions and a worldview that resonates with me personally. Over the last few years I’ve spent quite some time learning techniques of music production that have made a substantial improvement to how "professional" my work is. But sometimes I feel like I’ve lost my soul along the way and I hate to admit that while I’m typing out these words. I’ve felt it for months. I already know this. Yet I haven’t talked to anyone about this so far because I’m afraid of the consequences that I might have to draw...

To be honest, I hesitated to click on the video, and boy was I surprised to find John Mayer. Equally excited too, I have to say. I absolutely love this idea. My first camera was a T7i, and I’m still shooting on it 4 years later. I started with an 18-135mm lens, 3.5. Nothing fancy, and not exactly the most “popular” lens. I started experimenting with other lenses as I progressed with street photography, thinking that would take my work to the next level, and even today I was just thinking, that I’ve always felt more creative with the 18-135mm, because I’m used to it and I’m comfortable with working within its limitations. I often feel like my work with my 85mm, 50mm, and 35mm hasn’t been as impactful. Taking away the other lenses, I’d choose the 18-135. Awesome video! Thanks for sharing.
