I feel the reason Viserys got married again and created a situation of competing heirs is not just 'cause the patriarchy told him to, but because he probably never really had full faith in Rhaenyra as an heir. Despite his pretty words, he wholesale buys into the patriarchy. He was dreaming of a male heir the whole time. He only named Rhae heir as lip service out of guilt over Aemma and dislike of Daemon. I watch what people *do*, not what they *say*, and he never did anything real to strengthen her position. He was laissez-faire 'til the end, and now it's out of his hands because of Otto and Alicent's ambitions. "If you want to see what someone is about, you look at what people do. Viserys’s “dislike” of Daemon wasn’t misplaced. Jahaerys’ reign was peaceful and prosperous, and Viserys wanted to continue that. Daemon first of his name would have shredded it in record time.

You made me think about what it would have been like if Viserys had let Daemon be his sword hand. Viserys, partying and being everyone's friend. Someone starts some shit. "Have you met my brother? Daemon dear, introduce yourself to Lord Shitstirrer. I have a tourney to plan." 🤣

Thanks for a great chat, folks. Halfway through season one and I have to admire how they've taken the ambiguous events of the book and translated it to the show in a new way. Vital plot points happen but we're left a little uncertain as to what the motivations were. Why did the fight break out at the green wedding? Did Daemon say the heir for a day speech mockingly or with sadness? Did Daemon intend to kill his wife or did it just sort of happen? It's a really neat trick, one that could easily be done badly. But Condell and the rest get it tantalisingly right.

Or sometimes we don't see an event play out to remind us that truth doesn't matter, only perception. Does Rhaenyra drink the moon tea? Did Daemon kiss Rhaenyra at her wedding? We don't know but it also doesn't matter. I love it.

I look at like Daemon couldn’t finish on his wedding night with Rhea and that’s why he was so openly mean about her to everyone. He’s doing that to mask his own failure with her.

In regards to Ser Cristin, if he truly loved her, we would have understand and stood by her. He may say he loved her but he loved his honor more therefore it turned to revenge. My favorite is Rhynera flying to Dragonstone and facing Daemon. Its true though at the end of the day its the institution, the maester, and society, the council, that caused the death of the dragon. Now I wonder if Viserys and previously talked about this reservation with dragon that made it easier for the institution and society to choose Viserys to reign. What is a dragonlord who doesnt/have like dragon... just another lord.

My theory is, that wasn't Daemon with Rhea Royce. That was Mysaria using a glamour. That's why as she came closer, the horse became uneasy, until it finally reared up. I need HotD to let the magics out of the closet.

Yes I love this theory.. there hasn’t been much magic in the show yet n I have to believe they’re saving it for some crazy reveals down the road, hopefully by the end of this season.. something was definitely purposefully off about that scene with rhea and daemon.. and we’ve already seen daemon be confronted with things throughout the season and rather than deny them he just goes along with it, so this could be the same case for this situation

Ooh, didn’t even think of that. Can see it…. Real!Daemon would have an alibi, no obstacle to inheriting. The other thing is that there’s a certain subletly in that scene that doesn’t quite fit Prince Daemon ‘What are you goin’ to do about it?’ Targaryen.

Great stream! All the talk about the second sons reminds me the mythical astronomy part the second sun that happens when dragons fight dragons and lightbringer in the sky appearing as a second son. Which really makes me think that the long night is really a family feud happening in a planetary scale.

I think Daemon was coming to talk with Rhea about an anullment and when she made her comment, her fate was sealed. It looked like Daemon was going for the reins to calm the horse, not to startle it. Idk I just thought since they’ve had no kids and they both hate each other, they could possibly come to an agreement and say the marriage WAS consumated but never were able to produce heirs together.

Who turns up in the middle of nowhere in nondescript clothing with a hood up for that? Also the horse was calmer *before* he reached for it. He then continued to reach for it seeing how he was affecting it. This is a world with lots of horses, he knew what he was doing.

The Strongs are an old house, but I do think that the Lords Paramount and other big Andal houses tend to view whoever has Harrenhall as up-jumped new money (no one ever keeps it for long and they usually get it by overreaching). So I could see them not being viewed as prestigious enough for a royal match.

LOL Viserys is like these men who can *only* imagine women as being full, deserving humans once they have a daughter. That's part of what makes the whole dialog with Corlys SO ridiculous... "Well if we're going by tradition.." - Rhaenyra won't be Queen. And if we're bucking tradition - Rhaenys, not Rhaenyra would be Queen. And these two men are aware of these things, while not spelling them out. Daring each other to say something, but nothing comes out. AND we're talking about totally bucking tradition for future generations, letting women inherit - BUT we need to go by tradition and adopt the male surname 😆 The whole conversation is an exercise in contradiction.

I having a hard time following Rings of Power. I am a non book reader for both LoTR and GOT but I understand GOT storyline excluding season 8. The people who like ROP most likely were season 8 GOT fans.

Any way, regarding ROP and AGOT TV show S08, well ROP and Amazon Studios creators unlike D&D AGOT S08 creators, didn't have/bought all The Lord of the Rings rights, as those thingies ARE WAY TOO DAMN complicated, entangled and entvained more than IRL current political situation in Europe, Asia, whole world in fact lol 😂 😂 😂... Some things and stuffs, ROP showrunners probably had to mix up with some other stuffs and all, but all in all, long story short my guess is ROP TV show is placed in or at somewhere between year 1000SA and 1500SA, as Pharazond still hadn't came to full power and rule in Numenor, Tar Palintir is still alive, Prince Durin IV, Celebrimbor as well, Sauron still hasn't invaded Eriador, so on and so forth... And if I may say one more thing, to conclude my presentation 😉 😊🙃, reading and growing up with these kinds of books/novels, as well as worlds literature classics, surely did have made my life and moments whole lot better & enjoyable.

I read your whole comment. Thank you for the explanation but I am still confused with LoTR sometimes. I think that if I ever read the books then maybe I will have more of an understanding of the entirety. I am currently watching episode 6 of ROP as I haven’t given up on the show. I feel bad for the actors though as some of them are good but not great storyline. Maybe it is not the writing. I know that soemthing is missing from the storyline but not quite sure what it is missing. I am glad that you had a good laugh 😆

I did start out hating Otto, but I have definitely changed my mind. I think he just recognizes that the realm will tear itself apart with all the heir stuff. Larys on the other hand, I believe his sole mission is to kill the dragons and it's all perpetrated by Oldtown.

If Daemon had been made Hand when Viserys became king (or even in episode one), how do you think he would have done in the job? Do you think he steps up and does a good job? Or is he what everyone assumes he'll be-- another Maegor?

I think he might have started off well, feeling he got the recognition he deserved, and Viserys could have used someone with a more suspicious nature to balance out his tendency to assume the best. Ultimately though? Greed is never satisfied.

Big hole in the Maester Conspiracy for me is Lyonel Strong. He studied at the Citadel long enough to earn six links. Wouldn’t he have some sort of knowledge on how the Maester’s work? Wouldn’t he have seen signs of betrayal around Varys. Of course not necessarily. He was probably just incorruptible, and they knew that.

Something clicked when you said Aegon adopting the faith of the 7; it seems like the numerous gods of Old Valyria, which only a fraction are named in the story, are parallel with the countless, nameless gods of the north/first men. The icy Starks have wargs and greenseers, and the fiery Targaryens have dragon lords and dreamers. If all the varying magics in this world draw from the same magical well, there could be more to it than just parallel similarities.

1:39:07 great discussion. I just want to add that only in America is the term middle class used to refer to people in such a precarious position. If you're a few pay cheques away from being homeless that's solidly working class in most of the rest of the world. I don't understand why American terminology has evolved so strangely. I mean how is that not just working class?

Do you really think Daemon intended to leave Rhea alive and leave it to chance?? She wasn't far from the castle, and they would have been out looking for her as soon as the horse made it's way back to the stables. Chances were quite high that at that point that she could have been found alive. Daemon's not that sloppy. He went there undercover so that no one could pin the murder on him so for him to walk away and leave her there conscious and sound of mind, I just can't see him doing that at all. I'm of the opinion that he went there to kill her. He just wasn't set on how that would play out. Allowing her several opportunities to goad him made the scene more impactful to watch rather than her just dying from the fall. Plus, it gives us more insight into the depth of Daemon's cruelty. Edit: I can't even support it when they say it in the Inside the Episode! 🤪I do not think that is how the scene was written to be interpreted.

Regarding Daemon he was clearly there for no good reason. Like who turns up in a hooded robe in the middle of nowhere? Why reach up to someone's horse unless you want to control it (grabbing the bridle and reins gives you control)? I reckon he was there to kill her.

Maybe this is just me, but doesn't Rhaenys & Otto see the challenge to the throne similarly..? I feel like Rhaenys is getting the rightful credit for political acumen, but Ottos pov is seen as steering Alicent down a wrong path. As someone who hasn't read the books I don't see much of a difference, but I do see more pitfalls to Rhaenyras rule due to lack of setup, fortifying of her claim, etc.

It's massive, still strong, in fact it's still one of the strongest castles in Westeros. Also it's lands that it rules over are very fertile, some of the richest in Westeros in fact. Someone who is lord of Harrenhal would be one of the strongest lords in Westeros.

Great to hear your stories. The Judas story and the Abraham story from the bible made me start to stop believing, and the fact that god let his son be tortured and killed, plus the fact that other religions exist.

Why does Lyonel Strong's sons look like they're the same age as he is? How did the royal carriage get to Driftmark? The ship they were traveling on doesn't seem big enough nor does it show there was more than one ship. Just two things that kinda bother me about the show...otherwise I'm totally loving it. It seems to be well written with absolutely beautiful production.

I think the daemon and rhea thing is just a matter of compatibility tbh. Like yeah on paper they seem like they might work, but from what little we've seen of rhea she seems like a very morally upright person that doesn't buy into the whole targaryen exceptionalism, "i can do anything i want because i ride a dragon so fuck everyone else" mentality that daemon espouses. It's also possible that she conducted herself with the austere idea of honour that's part of the culture in the vale It's like he told rhaenyra at the party "laenor is a good man and a fine knight. he'll bore you senseless". To us normies (and honestly anyone's who's not as messed up as daemon) we rightfully find rhea to be awesome. But to daemon people like her are "boring"
