This video reminded me why I am not using windows for last 10 years at all. Bought used t450s recently after one of Your videos and installed SolydX (Debian10 based) straight away. Before I had Dell inspiron 1720 also with linux. Looking for drivers then switching off the udpates, oh my that is a lot to Think about to keep the Pad useful. Greetings from UK.

Thanks to this video i finally succeed in installing the correct drivers for the T450 trackpad. I totally miss the "recovery" step for Win10. Next step is the FHD panel, that is flying to me from china!!!! Thank U Sebi!!!

if, like me, you're doing this for Win10 AME (Ameliorated) then you may have trouble accessing the recovery menu by the normal methods. run cmd.exe as administrator (search for cmd.exe in start menu; right click; run as administrator) Enter the following commands: bcdedit.exe /set nointegritychecks on bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit.exe -set TESTSIGNING ON Now restart your PC. You should see "Test Mode" in the bottom right hand corner. Follow the instructions in the video to install your drivers. It will ask you if you're sure you want to install an unsigned driver, click yes on this occasion. IMPORTANT: You will want to turn these settings off again for security reasons. To do so is very similar to above: bcdedit.exe /set nointegritychecks off bcdedit -set loadoptions ENABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING OFF Hope this helps the 2 other people in the world like me lmao

One thing I didn't realize - I did disable windows from updating the trackpad drivers in the group policy editor but I didn't account for Lenovo Vantage software. It was ALSO set to update automatically. So....had to do the process over again. I have now disabled that in Vantage as well. Just a heads up to anyone that might be doing this

I did have an unrelated question about upgrading the processor on these laptops. I often hear you(and many others) talk about upgrading to a quad core processor in these Thinkpads but you never mention what generation. Not all quad cores are the same since we are now on the 10th generation I7 processors. What is the newest generation we can install for the fastest performance?

Just did it! you just got around ten clicks on that video because in the first place i did not download the driver in the videodescription, i downloaded one i googled and it didnt work and then irepreated the whole process to make it work! very happy that anyone can do this with very small time to put in. Next time read the description first! hahaha

I´ve noticed that on the last version of Windows 10 20H2, the way Windows handles drivers changed. For my surprise, after I reinstalled Windows on my T440p and using the T460s Touchpad Driver, it just installed out of the box and is holding so far.

Hey Sebi! Guy that sold you this T440p, I had the same scaling issue with it's sister machine when I used a E550 trackpad (syn version), I was able to solve it by using an older version of the driver to solve the scaling issue, might have just been a fix only for the E550 trackpad, but it might help out.

On my T440s with Windows 10 and an Alps touchpad I used the n19gx17w driver. I had to edit the INF file and install it with driver signature enforcement disabled, but I only had to disable automatic driver updates in Lenovo System Update and Lenovo Vantage, not on Windows. It's been working fine for months now. I use 125% scaling on my 1080p display and the "Windows Default (large)" cursor, and it doesn't change size when scrolling.

Or you can use a wireless mouse. That's if you're not a Trackpoint user. Also, the reason the T450 and later models don't have upgradeable CPU's is that Intel stop making socketed mobile CPU's altogether.

I've bought several 40 series Thinkpads, 3 so far. I've only sucked D's bc of them. I literally hate them bc of the drivers, not bc of how terrible they feel. On a T440 the touchpad would stop working as soon as I installed the Synaptics drivers->sent back to the seller, got my money back. Appearalnty my windows installer/installition was bad. After that, I've bought a T440p that already has been modded to a T450 mousepad. Ironically, I've installed the T450's drivers, without any modding, and it worked for the first time perfectly. god nows why tho. And about 2 weeks ago, I've bought my X240. Oh boii, it was a nightmare and a heart attack to get the touchpad (or the trackpoint?, I can't remember) to work. I downloaded the Synaptics drivers from Lenovos site, and guess what, it didi't work At all... Then I've uninstalled it, and proceeded to install the drivers from windows update, wich magically, worked. The 40 series thinkpads might be damn good, but the pointing device drivers are just plain terrible.

I'm running Windows 10 LTSC (1809 I think) and Startup Settings under Advanced, Troubleshoot was only visible after selecting "see more recovery options" a second page how very clever MICROSOFT!!

Under “Mouse Property”, the boxes for “enable TrackPoint” and “Enable Touchpad” are gray. My touchpad is not working. What could be the problem? Will install new drivers help?

@Sebi's Random Tech. I also have T440p with t450s touchpad. On ChromeOS and on linux 2 finger scroll works perfect, on Windows 10 doesn't work. Did You have 100% working solution for this? I will try now driver from Your link but I still have problem with no working sliding, 2 finger scroll on win 10... All files/drivers avaible deleted, installed and edited drivers and still no result. I havet t450 Synaptics. Thanks!

Great video thanks. I've hacked Windows 11 on to my T440p and installed a T450 trackpad. All working fine but despite following your instructions the buttons are not working. The trackpad works great though!! Any thoughts on what might be different in Windows 11 to Windows 10 to get the T450 trackpad working (Synaptic)?

Hi Sebi. I swapped the synaptics trackpad from thinkpad e550 to my t440. Which syn driver am i supposed to use, e550 or t450 drivers? I heard somewhere that the e550 trackpad is the same as the t450 one.

I've tried installing four separate drivers, the one from your original video, this one, and two more from the ThinkPad forums. Still nothing for me. This is my first time doing this modification. Every single one of the drivers complained that I need to contact the owner or administrator of the SynPD.inl file to save my edits to the SEN200E and SEN0036 command lines. I tricked it by deleting the original SynPd file, saved the modified one under downloads, then moved it to the right path directory, then rebooted with the Windows 10 driver certification disabled. On all four it says the driver installed fine, with everything in green checkmarks, but when I reboot, then proceed to open the Synaptics driver settings to configure trackpoint settings, it says it's not installed properly and won't open. Help?

Hey my t440's fingerprint doesn't work I did everything but it doesnt work. Hardware is fine as it worked with Windows 8. I called customer care it only supports upto windows versionn 1707. But I don't want to downgrade my windows. Please tell me a solution

Unrelated to the video, but a heads up nonetheless: There's a guy out there who's working on porting coreboot to the W541 as we speak. I emailed him some questions, one of which was "don't these things have Intel Boot Guard which would make coreboot impossible?" His response was basically "yeah the W541 does technically but for some reason it's turned off, and the same goes with the T440p and T540p". So hang onto that T440p, if its board/BIOS chip is anything similar to the W541 it just might have coreboot coming soon to it as well ( link to the code push: review.coreboot.org/c/coreboot/+/38733 )

While T440p with a quad-core i7 CPU is a really powerful machine (especially considering the price), it's sadly obliterated by the modern U-series CPUs. An i5-8250u outperforms i7-4712mq while also running cooler and being more energy efficient. Not to mention more powerful graphics, introduction of SpeedShift and advanced hardware video encoding features (especially relevant if you're doing video editing). Thermal constraints is also something you should consider - most of 35W+ CPUs for T440p would hit thermal limit really fast and hover at around 300-400Mhz above the base clock. They also don't handle undervolting as good as modern CPUs - both i7-4702mq and i7-4980hq in Wolfgang's T440p would crash on -80mV while i7-8750H in his Dell XPS 15 can handle as much as -150mV. A T440p with all the upgrades can cost as much as $500-600. For that price you get a fairly old and chunky machine with modest battery life (even with a 9-cell battery). Now, if you only have $500-600 to spend on a laptop, this is still a great option, way better than any of the new $500 laptops on the market. But for like $700 you can grab yourself an entry level T480 which will outperform T440p while being cooler, thinner and lighter, will have an amazing battery life, modern storage and ports (NVMe SSD, Thunderbolt 3, USB Type-C, HDMI) as well as plug-and-play eGPU capability. So unless your budget is heavily constrained I don't really see a reason to go with the T440p over a T480.

For me, the i5 cpu is more than enough. Can't think of a scenario where the CPU was the bottleneck. Video encoding maybe? Why do you think you need an i7 over an i5?

Idk who wants to use a terrible track point when touchpads are so much more fluid. I actually like t440's touchpad better in a lot of ways bc it is bigger. If it wasn't so squishy I would actually put it in my t450 so I would have more room for vertical scrolling. The track point also sometimes gets in the way when typing too. Trackpoints were meant to stay in the 90's and early 2000 where they belong. As well as on the 3ds as a second analog stick.
