I love how she slowed this down, stripped off the party vibe, but honored Elvis, while opening up this song to deliver its essential meaning to our hearts. Her phrasing is superb.

What is amazing to me, is how she brings out the story of the song. No matter what she sings, when she is done, you know the story, you know what the writer had to say. So often the storing behind the song gets lost in the pomp and circumstance of the performance, with Angelina you get the story. Many of the songs she has covered I have just thought "Wow, that is what they were saying". This is one of them. I didn't get this from the Elvis version. I get it, get it big-time in the Angelina version.

I must have listened to this close to 300 times so far, and when she sings the first line, it makes my eyes tear up every time. Yes, her voice has matured or grown or just got better. I have to ask, were you on a treadmill at the beginning? it looked like you were walking. 🙂

When I saw this video in my subscriptions I thought I had to check it out cause I didn't think there was any way she could get her voice deep enough to cover Elvis, but she knocked it out of the park. In the Wikipedia entry of the origins of the song, he is said to have remarked "That late one night, he was fooling around on his Fender guitar and using his Hammond organ pedals for a bass line and came up with what he thought was a catchy melody. It was beautiful. After listening to it several times, I decided to download the lyrics to see whether she kept to the original structure. She didn't, and the song is all the better for it. My interpretation of the symbolism of this music video: First, and foremost; Angelina Jordan at 16 is the epitome of a Storytelling ARTIST, and she has the ability to take us by the hand and lead us down an imaginary path that we visualize as reality. The remarkable fact is that we experience this in each of her performances. In this video we see her as a married woman in her mid to late 20s. As AJ sings the phrase “Were caught in a trap, I can’t walk out” we see 3 small children, this to me is a marriage where the children come first. If it were AJ by herself, she would not stay in a relation without trust.

Yes, it's a different song, but it's the same, yes, it's still that song, but somehow (in a way only Angelina can process) it's even more emotional, it's slower, yes, but it's closer to flowing of your soul.
