Truth. I've been saying this about the Revolutionary War era conflicts west of the Appalachians as well. You could be historically accurate and fair to both sides and in my opinion, it would be super interesting. The relationship/dynamic between Boone and Blackfish where they liked and respected each other while also simultaneously standing on opposite sides of the conflict, etc.

The English were wearing riveted maille armor, taken from deep storage in the Tower of London. Despite what the movies and television tell you, riveted maille armor works quite well against flint tipped arrows propelled by 40-pound bows. Theoretically, the natives could have simply overwhelmed by force of numbers, but their forces were more akin to a “flash mob,” composed of many small groups from all over the place who might or might not have known each other than an actual organized, centrally led army with a clear-cut chain of command. As a result, their attacks were uncoordinated efforts by separate groups which could be defeated in detail.

I caught that too, my guess is when he said that muskets weren’t as effective he meant during guerrilla warfare in the forest, also muskets when used individually were ineffective because after they fired it took so long to reload the Natives would run up and kill the colonists after they fired and were trying to reload, but in that specific battle were there was a somewhat big group of Englishman massed fire when they all fired at once could be very deadly, the Indians were likely unwilling to charge them although they likely could’ve overwhelmed them with their superior numbers because the amount of deaths would’ve been too great, the Natives normally fought opportunistically when they had the advantage, also the English we’re probably wearing armor which helped. I am kind of skeptical that a lot of natives were actually killed in the battle though as they normally wouldn’t keep attacking if they knew the battle was unfavorable to them. Also it can be very hard to determine exact casualties for natives in many battles as they often took their dead warriors with them when retreating, meaning that most times when the battle was being written about after the fact, the amount of casualties is almost always an estimation and almost never known for sure, and sometimes prone to exaggeration by the Europeans.
