Here is a flip through of Second Grade Math With Confidence by Kate Snow. We used First Grade Math With Confidence last year and loved the solid teaching for memorizing addition and subtraction facts, so we are keeping on with this curriculum another year!
Its straightforward how to teach, just read down the page and present game’s exactly as it says. This is a very hands on teacher led curriculum, and not very worksheet heavy at all. It’s not heavy with word problems, although I’d love to see more of those in future years. Kate snow plans to release a new level each June up through 6th grade.
My kindergartener will also be using kindergarten math with confidence as well.

Thank you for this flip through. My son and daughter did Easy Peasy All in one homeschool (Math included) preschool through 1st grade. Second grade we are doing The Good and The Beautiful's new 2nd grade math. My kids have been successful in their math, but I am noticing a weakness in having the facts memorized (still a lot of bead counting and finger counting). So we are planning on doing Math facts that stick (addition and subtraction); I think they may have missed this solid foundation and maybe that is playing some part in their grief towards math. I'm now seriously considering this program (have been for awhile), but especially after this review. They are just over half way through TGTB math; and from the flip through I think they would be able to do the entire Math with Confidence book already. Which makes me think The Good and The Beautiful math must be a bit advanced; if this program is very on par for grade level. Since my kids are not big math lovers (daughter more into writing, reading, art) and son more into (history, science and nature), I'm thinking this might be a better fit and maybe they would start having some fun with it.

Sounds like either math program you go with, doing Addition and Subtraction Facts That Stick would be a good plan first! There’s a lot of practice with double digit mental addition and subtraction in level two, which will be easier if they’ve done the facts that stick series first. My own mental math has improved SO much from learning alongside my daughter! I’ve heard that TGATB new math is a bit advanced but also less deep on one topic, less mastery and more spiral? You would know more than me on that since you use it. I’m sure both will present the information needed for grade level but your kids might like one style more. It’s hard to pick a math program and then there’s the picking and seeing how your kids do with it 🤪 We’d switched 3 times before landing on our current math. Hope you find a good fit!

New to your channel and we are trying out MWC2 this spring. As a heads-up the Well Trained Mind has the PDF printables available for free on their site. I just printed all of the games and things that would have been pulled off from that. I imagine they’ll do it again when third is released. :)

Thank you so much for sharing! I think I'm just about sold. When you say that it isn't as complex or rigorous as other programs, does that simply mean that it doesn't cover as much ground? We homeschool year round, so I'm thinking we will get ahead (ok, catch up, initially!) or have time to delve into other material. Is it the overall pace, or the content itself?
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel Жыл бұрын
I would say the overall pace is fine, and the scope and sequence can be compared to any other math program and does cover all the 2nd grade math checkboxes. But for reference my oldest uses Singapore math 2022 and it seems to really ask a lot of deeper thinking questions in each lesson to help them dig deeper into the “why” for a lot of math. You can watch my new comparison video of the 2, and we will continue using diff curriculums for diff kids at this point for my oldest who is too old for MWC.

I’m intrigued. My second grader is really struggling with Singapore Dimensions - I even paid for the video lessons and they just went so fast she got overwhelmed and shut down. Before that we were doing Good and the Beautiful which she flew through for 1st grade but just jumped around way too much for her in 2nd and then would bring stuff back to review and she couldn’t remember it. Wondering if this would be a good in between 1st grade G&B and 2nd grade Singapore.

Bummer the videos weren’t helpful For Singapore Math! We used good and the beautiful (their original level k before the change) and switched to Singapore primary 2022 in 1st with my oldest. If dimensions is not a good fit, I really think she’ll enjoy the pace and fun involved in MWC. You can always add a Singapore math workbook like word problems on grade level if desired too. We may do that in the future with my 2nd grader using MWC. Not sure if you watched my video comparing Singapore Primary 2022 with MWC but that might help. Switching to Primary 2022 might also be an option if dimensions is too much…I’ve heard it’s just lighter and a little bit easier.

We haven’t. But I’ve heard from people who have that MWC is like Right Start math blended with Singapore math.

I heard Right Start is game based and teaches problem solving techniques as well as "the math way of thinking" which can help with advanced math. Very manipulative based.

Thank you for this helpful video! My daughter hasn't been memorizing math facts, and I am considering MWC for third grade. Would you recommend using her math facts program? I know third grade isn't out yet, but based on your experience with this curriculum would it be necessary?

That’s a great question. If I was you, I’d probably do the 6 week Addition Facts That Stick, maybe over summer, then do 3rd grade if she doesn’t have math facts down. The second grade level we are in kind of assumes they’ve learned those basics and might be frustrating learning to add double digit numbers (mentally) etc without that base.

To be honest I’m not sure! I love that MWC holds your hand as a teacher much more than the Home Instructor Guide from Singapore Primary 2022 , and is hands on. However, I find my son to be doing more complex problems and multi step story problems that I wish MWC had more of. Plus, he seems to be able to do his worksheets a bit more independently if we’ve already learned the material. I feel like if my daughter doesn’t do the “extras” daily with me in MWC than the 1 page front and back worksheet just isn’t enough? So it’s overall more parent involved so far than Singapore has been for us. They are both good but different, I wish I had a solid favorite!

@@LizBlueandHazel I had the same question! Now that you've used MWC a bit longer, do you have a preference between it and Primary 2022? We've used and loved MWC for kindergarten and now 1st, but my daughter seems to want more challenge so I've considered switching to 2022.

@@amies8203 My favorite is by far Math With Confidence. We are in week 12 of 2nd grade and I just feel like it’s easy to teach and while it’s slower and not as “rigorous” it’s enjoyable and thorough. One worksheet a day is not a lot so it’s clutch to do some of the hands on stuff. But my son is doing say 3 worksheets a day with Singapore 2022 and not a lot of “fun” math games or hands on stuff. Some, but not as much. What I’m wondering now is if it’s be beneficial for my daughter to add anything, like maybe Singapore math word problems book (by level), or just let it be as is.

Hi! I am strongly considering this program for my youngest child. My only sorrow is that it was not available for all of my older children! Anyhow - I am looking at the student workbook sample online for 2nd grade. There is a little symbol used twice on page 17 that I do not understand. I see it on pages 19 and 22 as well. At first I thought it was a number four, but???? Can you please help me out?
