We are big fans of the Math With Confidence math curriculum by Kate Snow! 2 of my kids are using it and we've now covered all levels between them. With grade 3 out this June, (and each new grade released each June), I've put together this flip through of the 3 books.
The main focus of grade 3 is multiplication and division, but she's obviously included things 3rd graders should be learning. She's also added in 2 step story problems which I really appreciate!
That's right, one change you'll see is 3 books instead of 2. However, it's not any more complicated, they just have 3 worksheet pages per lesson to work through instead of two as in grades 1 & 2. I'll explain what this looks like and how it's done.
You'll also notice that instead of having the lessons divided by weeks they're now organized by unit and the number of lessons in a unit varies. It doesn't seem harder to organize and it's still very open and go! (This is also how Singapore Math organizes their curriculum too in Primary 2022).
Kate has also changed the optional enrichment lesson (that used to be at the 5th day of each week) to the last day of each unit. So there will be fewer of them, 16 to be exact for 16 units instead of one each week.

I was also concerned about it not being rigorous enough. I then realized that my son loves math, loves the games, and I love teaching it. Setting a solid foundation is so important, but Kate Snow understands that can be done without giving a ton of worksheet problems or rushing through concepts. Thanks for the flip through!

That’s exactly what I came to think as well! It feels like just the right amount of practice problems too. Hope this year goes well for you!

Switching to MWC 1st Grade more than halfway through the school year was the best homeschool decision I've made. It was hard not to just finish out the other curriculum! But I'm so glad we just went for it. It's changed math completely for us. We cant wait to start 2nd grade in a few months!

I know you’ll love it! I know what you mean about feeling like you don’t want to waste part of something you started too, we’ve done that with math and it’s hard! So worth it when you find something that’s a better fit.

I wish they'd had better samples of this! I think my son could EASILY get through Book A right now. Changing out our old curriculum more than halfway through the year with 2nd grade for him was a great decision. And it's going well! This was very helpful, thank you!

I’m about to start using K and 2nd but this has been really helpful as I’m starting MWC for the first time. I really appreciate your idea of copying the game instructions to use in future. I ended up making a photocopy of each and putting in a binder in sleeve protectors. Now I’m going to go back and add the instructions. Thank you!!

Your organization will pay off! Hope you love the math program as much as we did. We also did k and 2nd grade this year. I have videos on those years as well if you need any more specifics (in the math video playlist in the description).

I've really enjoyed your videos...found you as I was navigating Brave Writer's Dart. I'm realizing that we're really using similar curriculum for your 3rd graders.(Ambleside, Math with Confidence and Dart with Brave writer.) It's been a great year so far. Lol. lots of sorting through things and praying for the right decisions. As well as searching for things that are flexible for a variety of ages. And easy on me as I teach all the kids.

Wow we really are using a lot of the same materials! Thanks for saying hello! Yes, I hear you with lots of thinking and praying over what direction to go yearly, monthly even! Blessings on your year. I just put out a new video today on Ambleside & Brave Writer and my thoughts on using them together. I’d love to know your thoughts since you use both!

I know for the other levels they have the games you can print out separately directly from their website. Not the directions but that way you don’t have to tear them out of the book. I haven’t checked to see if they have the third grade games in the website yet though.

I've read a couple comments about how the paper in the student workbooks for Grade 3 is thinner than the K-2nd workbooks. Have you had any problems with erasing answers, tearing, or picture bleedthrough from the flipside? Or is the lighter weight workbook paper not significantly noticeable?
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel Жыл бұрын
So we haven't yet begun grade 3 lessons, so I can't speak to the erasing, but I doubt it would tear. But here are my thoughts after feeling the grade 3 next to the old grade 2, 1, and k books, as well as comparing it to my oldest's Singapore Math workbook. It's definitely thinner paper than before, probably to fit more sheets in a smaller space or to cut cost for us with 1/3 more worksheet pages (that will get used during the lesson). The thickness feels similar to standard 20lb printer paper in my printer. It also feels exactly like our Singapore Math workbooks with the paper thickness. It's not so thin that I'm seeing pictures from the other side of the sheet, and we always do math with a pencil so there won't be any bleeding through from writing either. I'm not bothered by the paper being slightly thinner at all. Hope that helps!

My son is starting MWC 3 as well! I was lucky to buy it for the 40% off when she released it last month. I looked at her 2nd grade last year and ended up with going with a different math program for my son. It worked out ok and he learned just fine but he hated it. We are just getting started with our year but he is super excited with for his new math!! My only concern was I read that it was suppose to be a “middle of the road” program & I hope he is challenged enough. He is really good at math.

If he had boring math or worksheet only math he’ll probably love this! I think a lot of people are initially concerned with that and it may be helpful to search that term in the search bar of the MWC Facebook group to see what others have to say. Not sure if you’ve considered this, but Singapore math has “challenging word problems” workbooks they are exactly that. I got my daughter level 1 just to try it out and get her used to some more story problems. It was my “over the summer” plan which didn’t happen, lol, as I truly needed a real break. But you may look into that if you find it’s just a little easy on some days. The first couple weeks will be easy I bet but it picks up after review.

We have used masterbooks, christian light, a few lessons from the good and the beautiful, and my son still struggles and hates math. I have resigned myself to the fact that he just isnt going to love it and that's fine. We just started our year reviewing addition facts with addition facts that stick and my kids are having fun with math (yay!). Ok all that to say im considering, with the fun they are having, switching to math with confidence. What would you say is the difference you see between masterbooks and mwc? From a usability, practice, approach, child engagement, length of lessons and opinion, perspective how would you compare the 2, similarities, differences? Id love watching a video of your thoughts on this. Thanks so much.

I would love to put a comparison video on my to do list, at least through 1st/2nd grade or so. I can't speak to Masterbooks in the older years. Some things I liked better about MWC better: 1) all the extra help with HOW to teach, including a script if needed.2) No lengthy story we had to read that we didn't like to learn the math. 3) Much stronger mental math skills, especially for addition facts. 4) Math games and directions included in lessons. Things that were nice about Masterbooks Math : 1) It could sometimes be independent unless the child needed help. 2) Lessons didn't exceed 10-15 minutes at 1st/2nd grade so sometimes it was easy to do multiple lessons in a day or finish quickly. 3) The way they teach place value is fun using "houses". Some people love it, some people hate it. With Masterbooks, I worried about my child not getting their math facts down (I really didn't like their right brain flash cards with answers on them), and I worried about the fact that Kate Snow (author of Math Facts series) called it a last resort program if your kid just hates math and you need something to get it done. Read her article here: kateshomeschoolmath.com/how-to-choose-homeschool-math-curriculum/.

My son just finished level 2 of TGATB. We are switching to Math with Confidence this year. He is very good at math, and understands all the concepts from level 2 well, but does not have the mental math abilities that MWC teaches (like he is not able to easily add 83 + 58 mentally). When i read what your child should know before starting level 3, that skill is on there. That is the only skill that he does not have. Is there enough review of that at the beginning of level 3 to teach him? Or do you think it would be best to start at level 2? Thank you!
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel 11 ай бұрын
That is a tricky question because level 2 did spend quite a good deal of time learning to mentally add 2 digit numbers. If I was you I'd ask that question on Kate Snows math with confidence Facebook page and tag her. She's usually great at getting back to people. If that's the only skill he didn't have though, you may be able to just buy the pdf version of the teachers guide (cheaper than print and hopefully at 40% off during one of the regular sales), and teach through those units. If you hear from Kate come back and let us know what she recommends in case anyone else finds themselves in the same boat! Best of luck.

I noticed it has books listed. Would you order those all in advance to have them for the year? We get our books from the library so I’d have to request them weeks in advance.

I wouldn’t pay for the books, unless you want to own them. They are optional, and you can do the whole curriculum without them! But it’s an enrichment idea. I’d get a few from the library, and also check KZfaq for people who read them out loud if you can’t get it from the library.

I love MWC. My son is a free thinker though. He solves everything the way he wants even after I show him Kate's way. His dad's side of the family are all gifted learners. It's thrown my classic style way off.He is about 6 months ahead of this course and I hate holding him back. What curriculum do you use for your older child? I purchased Apologia 4 and I am not super impressed with the explanations.

Ya if he’s ready for more you may have to challenge him using another curriculum. Singapore primary 2022 is what my oldest uses. I will warn you though it’s presented way diff. The home instructors guide has what’s covered each lesson but the parts in bold that you say are just questions. Questions that lead them to answering how to do things and it’s harder for me to teach. If you join the Math With Confidence Facebook group you can search for Singapore Primary 2022 and lots of posts will pop up from people who have used both or switched to give you a better feel of the differences!

Would this be a good curriculum for a child with a learning disability who is several grades behind in math

I’m not sure how this would be with a learning disability. I do think it’s gentle and very visual and hands on. Perhaps ask this q in the Math With Confidence Facebook group if you can as I’m sure there are many families who can speak from their experience there!
