I had a saying I used to tell newer umpires: the only thing worse than blowing one call is blowing two.

I feel like the field umpire was the biggest issue here. Plate umpire seemed to just want to get back to work and knew he screwed up because he kept a long leash for players and coaches.

Want to look away... Can't stop watching this train wreck... Oh the humanity...

I have to say that this is the BIGGEST train wreck I have ever seen! The Base Umpire kept escalating things when the Plate Umpire was trying to descalate it!

Honestly, I hate calling out fellow umpires, but BU is a great example of what not to do, ever.

Wow, terrible umpiring all around. Reversing a strike call, whether it’s right or wrong, is just unheard of. Also, approaching a coach who is minding his own business is the exact opposite of what you want to do

Wow, this was fun. I umpired 8+ years. I have called Strike Three on a strike 2 before.. opps, but never a reversed strike 3 call after conference. Wow! The plate umpire should have stuck with the strike 3 call (even though it was a bad call) and stuck with the interference in my opinion. Umpire screwed up the strike call but not the interference. The "blink" was a dumb excuse for making a bad call. He probably felt BAD and deserved to. I been there before. After the inning, he did the right and stayed away from the team that suffered his miss judgement (I was trained to do that as well) but the field umpire decided to get involved. The field umpire may have been the Sr. crew member and felt bad or something and wanted to make it right, but made it worse. Because of the field umpires actions, the teams got heated, aggressive, and the ejection was made. Umpires need to not escalate tensions like this guy did. I give some credit to the plate umpire for sucking it up, but the field umpire messed this entire game up in my opinion.

I am an HR professional who happens to umpire on the side. As much as I hate for one afternoon of work to define a career, that is what is going to happen for these two umpires--and in this case, it should. The game management was so bad that it should prevent any future promotion if either of them keeps their job following this. Making the first mistake is understandable--but the chain of errors is inexcusable.

Why is a D2 conference only using 2 man? That 3rd guy could have been a crew saver!

Great job team CCS. Thank you for taking the time to explain this one completely and what the right way to do this should have been. Yes, calling out umpires is not always a good or fun thing. This video was done in an educational way It's good to see these kinds of videos so that other umpires know how NOT to act in a similar situation... especially Field Umpire's shenanigans. I have seen plenty of "professional educational film" that show negatives for training purposes. I see this video under this umbrella. Lastly, Field Umpire needs some time away (hopefully by this point in the season, the rest of the year off) for terrible actions. Plate Umpire just needs a hey... good job for trying to keep this as calm as possible, but don't ever try to reverse an unreversible call again. I think he knew he messed up...

I'm sure after every strike call someone on the green team was asking if the plate ump. "Are you sure. Don't you want to check with your partner?" Perception is everything and the perception of everyone at the diamond will be that these two are not sure what they are doing. The moral of the story is if you miss one, you let the baseball gods make it up later. Not you, (because make-up calls almost always backfire) the baseball gods.

I was taught that baseball umping is 99.99% judgement calls. The rest is the rule book. When you make a judgement call, don't change it or second guess it. If you screwed up, don't change it. The next time you take the field, do better and don't repeat any mistakes.

Watched the video and read all the comments. Alot of negative opinions about the umpires. While I agree that U2 made things alot worse and he needs to better understand how to handle situations, U1 just missed one. Big deal. It happens. Giving U1 a little benefit of the doubt, he was probably expecting the catcher to stick it better. But the Game of Baseball and ALL of its components (including officiating) are imperfect. Mistakes will happen and as umpires, we all miss a call here and there, its part of the game, just like errors. Here's my thing: of all the comments, I didnt see anyone state what really should have occurred.... #1) the strike 3 call should have never been a discussion, let alone a reversal. Right or Wrong, U1 made his call, end of story. As umpires, we lose creditability by changing judgement calls, unless another umpire clearly had a better angle at a play in the field. But with VERY FEW exceptions, we are not changing calls on balls and strikes. #2) As one of the announcers opinionated, the batter (incorrectly) assumed it was ball 4, so he started toward 1st base and in doing so he hindered the catchers throw to 2nd. End result is Strike 3 batter is out and interference on strike 3 warrants the runner is out too. So the way the original officiating was made was correct. Setons Hills 3rd base coach asks U1 to confer his interference call with U2. As umpires we know batter interference is the plate umpires call, especially in 2-man when U2 is more than likely already turning to view the safe/out call at 2nd and probably wont see it as well as the plate ump anyway. U1 simply tells the coach, "Coach, that's my call and I have interference". Move on. Even if U1 wants to appease the Seton Hills coach and confer with U2, that conference is about 3 seconds long. "Partner, did you see the interference.... Nope, I had my back to you ready to make a call at 2nd". "Coach my partner did not have a view on it because he was watching the steal at 2nd" Whole thing goes away, start the next inning. Other than a missed (not bad) call of strike 3, this is only thing I feel U1 should have done better. Not sure how we go from a coach asking for help on the interference call, to changing the strike 3 call to ball 4 and making a common situation into the nightmare this became. These umpires are probably not as bad as the optics of this one situation. Situation mastery is always a work in process.

Your breakdown of these errors by the base umpire are spot on except one point. When the base umpire escorts the Head Coach back to the baseline that is Covid protocol instituted by the NCAA. Coaches aren't allowed to cross the foul line to argue and the umpires have been asked to approach the coach and have a conversation with them if its warranted from 6ft away.

Is it ever possible (within the confines of the rules) to reverse your own call nearly instantly? e.g. "Strike Three! That's interference! TIME TIME, That's ball 4, my mistake, no interference."

So are they going to replay from the point of protest or just write off the entire game because of travel constraints? Also, ejections after the protest stay, right? So the shortstop and coach will still be gone?

As an umpire myself, this hurts to watch seeing so many mistakes. You should never change your strike call like that for any reason, that's just inexcusable. But worse yet is that field umpire causing a huge scene about throwing a player out and going out of his way to scream at the coach and the bench. You should never be arguing with the coach still as you lead him back to the dugout, and especially should never go out of your way to meet with them under that circumstance (it's different if you're going to explain a call, like they did with the interference). I don't know how long these two have been doing games for but they don't deserve to keep working college games if that's how they're going to perform. That is just disgraceful all around.

So am I to understand that an upheld protest under NCAA rules means the game is wiped out? Every rulebook I've worked under always states that if a protest is upheld the game is re-started from the point of protest.

Was the Interference Call "returned", or is it still overturned, after the Protest?

These two knuckleheads should really think about a career change. And don't even get me started on the base guy. On top of a massive chip on his shoulder, he probably thinks he's one of the better umpires in his association.

Pitch calls get overruled every time a base umpire calls a checked swing a strike. The initial call is "no swing," the catcher appeals, the base umpire rules it WAS a swing.

How long does the plate umpire have to call ball/strike? Looks like the catcher has made the throw before the umpire calls a strike.

Game being played under protest! HAY CARUMBA!!!! The last thing you want to have if you are an umpire is to have a game played under protest!!!!!!! I remember an MLB umpire (Gary Cederstrom) go into his locker room, disappear for 10 minutes to look for the correct application of a rule so that the game would NOT be played under protest....

What was the result of the game after the protest?

That dugout for the next seven innings though..... one of the unspoken benefits of 3 man is the subtle art of the rodeo clown. Sometimes for players, sometimes for partners.

I love these videos, just saw this even though it's two years old. I kind of can't stand that there isn't a remedy when an ump makes the wrong call and then knows immediately before the game progresses at all, I mean as bad as this was that could ruin the game on an outrageous call the other way. I understand that it says judgement calls can't be reversed but what if the ump does it himself immediately or is it once he makes the signal then it's written in stone regardless?

I'd still like to know what the green team's player did to justify an ejection anyway. At first I thought he was ejecting the runner, although in MLB you don't get ejected for that college rules might be different. But there's no clear action from the defensive player at all. That field umpire may want to find a different line of work now.

Batter is OUT and so is the runner, if the umpire feels the catcher was hindered from making the out. Otherwise, batter is still out and all runners return to original bases. If the call was "ball four", there is no interference because batter and runner were entitled to their bases. Simple - Changing the strike to a ball can't be done and was just plain Stupidity that wouldn't have happened in a Little League game.

I have a question I know nothing about today's LL rules last time I played was 55+ years ago why was the SS thrown out? I thought he might have thrown the runner out for some kind of taunting or something ty...Everyone stay safe and healthy

Yea I pitched from little league to highschool and at age 13 I played for coaches that played pro or college. But they had the call right the first time because hitters cannot crossover the plate like that because it is called interference and the runner should have been out also

It looked like the rule said that judgment calls SHOULD NOT be reversed not CANNOT be reversed. So technically if it's egregious enough and it doesn't create "larger problems" a judgment called including balls and strikes can be overturned.

Does anyone know if it *was called* ball 4, there can be no interference since both BR and R1 are granted those bases? Edit: OMG it gets so much worse.

It's more a discussion on damage control. Thier decision after reversing would have been the right call at the time. Sucks that the rules actually prohibit the umpires from getting it right. It was a horrendous strike 3 call and it all could have been avoided by calling ball 4. Of course the players and coaches are gonna be pissed off with it

i tell coaches at the plate meeting: tell your batters and catchers never assume ball four or strike three. wait until you hear the definitive call and then act accordingly. also, the batter most likely knew that the steal was on, so either way, it's not in his team's best interest for him to walk in front of the catcher in the event there is a throwing play (in this case, strike three called). and even if it is called ball four, he can hesitate slightly and let the catcher throw 'cause it don't make no difference at that point. so i concur with the initial call of batter's interference. as to what happened after that.... i will defer to the expert analysis in the video.

Loved to see these announcers work a game. Just a little league game. Errors were made but thats baseball. "Disaster" is never used when either team boots, drops a hit ball or swings at a bad pitch. LOL

Stay brilliant PSAC... on the bright side, the field umpire probably has a chance to replace Angel Hernandez on the MLB umpire roster. Meanwhile the game was never resumed. Fortunately, it didn't have an impact on the PSAC West division standings as Seton Hill won the West (23-4 conference record) and Mercyhurst second (17-10) with California (Pa.) and Gannon with 16-12 records rounding out the top four.

All the replays failed to show the actual pitch. It's pretty clear the batter did not offer. However, if the plate umpire thought he did and called a check swing strike three, he can ask for help from the base umpire. Surely that would have come out in the protest. But, these guys never even explored the possibility. The umpire was pointing at the batter immediately. It's possible - not probable - he called a check swing strike three. A reversal of that call would have been allowable. Not a great handling, for sure.

Well, If the pitch is a strike, the INT is easy.. the bad part.. if that was in the strike zone that ump is an ostrich. it wasn't even close.. but, the rules are the rules, so if the plate umpire calls it a strike.. it's a strike.. that's final... meaning the INT is automatic.

Huh. OBR says "The first requisite is to get decisions correctly." "Umpire dignity is important but never as important as 'being right.'" (Rule 8.00 General Instructions) I guess NCAA has a different mindset.

And to think, if something like this happened in a MLB game, the wronged team would have no recompense. Major league games can no longer be played under protest.

What a fiasco, well a bad strike call given the sequence I have zero problem with original calls. Unless it is 100% obvious like umpire missed the ball being dropped or the other crew member reminding me of a rule I'm not inclined to change a call. Also the fact that judgement calls are not protestable is an umpires trump card if the play could hinge on two things one a rule and the other a judgement and umpire feels one outcome is correct they always use the judgement call. Although I'm not sure about the no reversing strike calls, every now and then you see it on foul tips, as a plate ump I never really take input but I've seen some that do, only thing a might listen to is fastpitch slapper out of the box call although even then rarely if ever.

The plate umpire shouldn't have gone for help. He missed the pitch... so what! He made the right call based on the fact the pitch was called a strike. Make the call enforce the rule and turn the page. There is absolutely no reason to get help. Man up and handle the argument and eject someone if they won't let it go but don't go for help in that situation. It is a bad idea to help for anything that isn't absolutely positively obvious and a situation you can ask for help by rule. The whole getting the call right thing has gone off the rails all the way in the opposite direction. I was umpiring Division I baseball when all of that crap started and needless to say this is what you end up with over the years. This is far worse than someone just sticking with their call all the time. Maybe both of these umpires will get fired and they will hire a young up and coming guy with a pro baseball background, this wouldn't have happened if you have qualified umpires on the field in the first place.

If HPU claims he made an inadvertent strike call and that he had it as a 'ball" intended on calling it a "ball" but brain farted the mechanics, is that acceptable to change the call? To be clear, not changing his mind on the ball/strike, just fixing the mechanical mistake. I can't go through all the comments, so if someone else has brought this up I apologize.
