How to Pass a Beach Volleyball- Basic drills you can do on your own with a ball and a wall.
How I became the best Beach Volleyball player in the World. Olympic Gold Medalist, World Champion, Winningest Player of All-Time.
I will show you...
1. How to pass with one arm before you pass with two arms
2. How to use all the different parts of your arm to pass
3. Learn to pass the ball with arm coming outside in and inside out to mimic what you will see in a competition
4. Learn to pass a ball up while swinging your arm side-to-side
5. Set against the wall while looking to the right and left so that you can…
6. Improve Your Vision- See the ball the blocker and the defensive player at the same time so you can hit it where they ain't. A Key to winning Beach Volleyball Matches
7. Drill to practice top spin- against a wall, while on your knees, while serving. Learning how progression works in training.
And finally, I reveal the winner of the Free Book Contest- One lucky fan wins a signed copy of Kings of Summer: The Rise of Beach Volleyball. Available at Amazon.com. Written by Travis Mewhirter and me. Get a copy!

It is so great to see you on screen again! I remember being 7 or 8 years old back in 1990 and my uncle who was a huge volleyball fan and player get me hooked on the sport. Nothing will ever top the golden era of beach volleyball. Watching you, karch, Stokey, sinjin, fro, ak, hov, dodd, aj and so many more was an amazing time for beach volleyball. Thank you for everything you gave me as a kid and even more so now at the ripe age of 39. My son is 16 and was a former soccer player. He caught me watching marathons of avp seasons 88-96 over and over again and now he’s hooked! Amazing memories and once again it’s so great to see you back on the sand!

Kent, I saw you play several times on the beach. Loved watching you and karch battle against the top teams especially those matches when jose and anjino first came out. They were epic battles. Great to see you contributing to the vball world and growing the sport. I am coaching modified volleyball and will put these skills into their practices. So worthwhile to learn and you dont even need a net.

This is the best bvb tutorial videos I've seen. Learning how to contact the ball with different parts of your arms and hands is the best way to improve passing and digging. If you can't control a ball against a wall or up and down to yourself, don't expect to be a good passer/defender. I will try out the top spin training. Usually I practice top spin with cut shots but I'll try on one knee and aiming at different parts of the court. Great video, Kent.

Great drills Kent. Growing up like you did at the beach, would be out there as much as possible. My brother and I also had a game wth a volleyball we called "Off the Roof" or Roof Ball. We had a stand alone screenhouse with a couple of picnic tables and our grill in it outside of our house. Concrete foundation with a real roof on it. We would spend hours setting, bumping and spiking balls onto the roof back and forth as a game with volleyball moves trying to get the other player to miss a ball before it fell to the ground. No throws allowed. It got us moving, jumping and perfecting vb skills. Only issue was when we would jump and try to spike up on the roof (it was an A frame with only 7ft high edges) we would sometimes hit the edge of the asphalt shingles and break them. Dad did not like that one bit and we spent many hours replacing shingles! Bottom line was we were having fun and this was before all the video stuff that is out now.

Terrible. Why would people cut a kid that wants to play. Always played on "open programs". Anyone could play, or at least practice. High School was open to all, we had the best High School team in the State. UCLA was an open program, three full courts. Anyone could sign up. UCLA best program in those days. Friend at UCLA (pre-med). He was a little on the short side. Was never going to make the Varsity. Asked him why he comes. He says, "I love volleyball and I get a three hour work out every day." Let the kids play!
@overwatchgale4640

Yeah I like this mindset much more! Especially as a freshman, teams should be open to letting students join-I think that in terms of exercise is excellent, but anyone can be an amazing player if given the opportunity and if they have the right mindset-maybe he’ll decide to go to UCLA haha

Thanks for posting the drills and writing the book, Kings of Summer. Hearing AVP’s history, the lead up to & play by play of the Gold Metal were excellent. The chapter(s) about traveling to Brazil, the work put in to have the sport included in the Olympics and matches played in Brazil were great as well. Take care BL, by an older guy from Louisville training to play 2s.

Kent, excellent video from one of the best! I still watch old matches of you with Karch. I'd be interested in hearing more of your thoughts about court vision when hitting (another video?). As you said, one must see the blocker, the court and the defender at the same time. What is the secret? What are your top 5 tips on having great court vision? Thanks!
@SteffesKent
@SteffesKent Жыл бұрын
Secret is to train yourself not to central focus, especially if you are just staring at the ball when you hit. It takes some time to learn to hit a ball when you have a "neutral" focus because at first you might whiff on a few! Try it. Keep the ball in front of you when you hit, don't stare straight up, losing all vision of the court. Jump forward, you sacrifice a little height but gain in vision. But above all else gain awareness. Are you seeing the ball the blocker and the defender when you hit? If not, tell yourself you will and practice.

@@SteffesKent I met you the day you were biking by Matthew’s Venice Training School. I looked at the ‘96 Olympics online news article with the highlight video of the finals from The Olympics and I recorded it and uploaded to my channel for new fans of the sport. My college coach (diff sport) always reminded us about how the opportunities we had available to us as a team were because we were standing on the shoulders of giants so it ALSO makes sense to me to remind others where the sport evolved from as we approach the Summer Olympics

You were great, had prob the best rt side line shot, and your win percentage was probably the best in the 90s. But Karch won a lot more tournaments, two additional Olympic Golds (indoors) and college titles, and beat you with AJ in 1998. I have great respect for your game though! Why not get back in shape and play some games? Peace my bro!

Who told you he won more tournaments? That is of course not correct. As to indoors that is a different game, so what does that matter? And in 1998 I had more wins and beat them with three different partners so... ok. Shall we look at 1997?
