Hi, AG! A few extras we have added come from the home health care aisle…no-rinse shampoo, no-rinse body wipes, and large disposable wash cloths. If you have to conserve water, these things are handy to have in a pinch. 🙂

I woke up the other day and my water didn't work. I had no idea at the time if I had a major water pipe fail or something else was happening. With no coffee my head was fuzzy and had a hard time clicking into action. I called the plumber, but their soonest appointment was two days out. I have water stored, but buried in the garage. As it turns out, the water bureau was making repairs for the neighborhood and everyone's water had been shut off. The plumber had urged me to call them otherwise I wouldn't have known. I decided based on this to store some water in the kitchen pantry so I have enough to wash my hands or make some coffee before needing to go to my storage. Just a large drink container would have been enough to get me going.

@@kristinb5121hi Kristin! I save liquid laundry soap containers. When they are empty I rinse them out until clean. I label them for handwashing only, fill them with clean water, and store one in each bathroom cabinet. Also, your water heater can be used as a source of drinking water. FEMA recommends that we store water for emergencies: 1 gallon per day per person for 2 weeks. 14 gallons for each person living in the house. A gallon a day is the amount they think we can get by with for drinking and bodily hygiene.

ANYTHING can happen to Anyone Anytime. My heat pump is not working and the weather is still cold. Fortunately, we have a one-level brick house which holds heat\. We have layers of clothes and many blankets, but it's been generally comfortable. I used the oven and all kinds of appliances to help warm the house,(with rooms closed off). However, we need our power box (circuit breakers) completely replaced, so I am preparing to have our power off for possibly a few days while our power company comes in, the electrician does his thngh, then getting the power company back. I am keeping laundry done as always, getting foods cooked, preparing to get the generator out for the freezer if need be and ready to use options for how to cook/warm food without power.We're ready! How wonderful to show many preps in small spaces because although I think most of us would want more, this is far more than most people have. Your three darlings... granddaughter, grandson, and Teddy! Thanks for sharing them with us.

Well done! I love watching everyone's channel to find foods we can't get here in Canada. I checked online for those Bob's Red Mill soup mixes in grocery stores here in Canada, but nada. However I did find them on Amazon! UHT cows milk is not available in Canada. They say it's because of low want/need, but it's likely the dairy corp not allowing it to be sold. I hope your visit was enjoyable. Thank you Alaska Granny.

@@kgrant3184 Hiya, nice to meet you! Funny thing is my hubby and I were saying last night that we wouldn't be surprised if the UHT was available in BC, since you are more culturally diverse and it's a very popular product in Europe. So it would make sense you could have found it in your province at one time. What about powdered milk? Can you get that there? I watch these videos and tell my hubby, we need to take a trip a wee bit south to visit said friend, and bring back a car full of groceries on the way back! The variety they have is enviable.

@@bmit04jessesue72 Hi Jesse Sue, yes, we can get powdered milk here - the usual SKIM milk powder, but it has become VERY expensive. I HAVE recently found the powdered, full-creme milk that AG mentions - the Nestle stuff. Found it at a new local Indian grocery - but NEVER in our usual big grocery stores. The tins that I found were already "at date", and I was initially loath to get them. Of course, they'd been bought when I went back in, but a month later they got some more, so at that time I bought some. I've also recently found some powdered peanut-butter, but so far, not the pwdr butter. If you have an Asian foods store - or an Indian foods store, try there. They seem to import more such "specialty" items. As for the UHT milk, I literally haven't seen it for over a decade! Shame - good for cabins/ summer homes. Good luck and best wishes!

I love this. As I clear out a closet (bought my husband's childhood home out of probate), I'll do this. This house has a pantry....in the very damp garage. And it's full of VERY OLD car parts (our middle son is working to clear those out...he's a certified mechanic. Parts aren't his but...he loves his mama 😂). Question that MIGHT be dumb. If you had several store bought cans of green beans that passed the best buy date two yrs ago, would you toss or??? My mother passed 10 days ago and she had several cans of green beans like that. Idk if toss or keep. Love you, Granny!! ❤❤
@brendanelson1027

So long as cans are not dented, rusty, corroded or leaking... they can be used for many years past the 'Best By' date. Always open & check the contents.... anything that smells bad or doesn't look good goes in the compost pile or trash. Normally, soups, canned veggies & fruits, canned meats & fish are good 5-7 years past that Use By or Best By date. Acidic canned foods.... pineapple, saurkraut, tomato products are usually good 1-3 years past that Best By date. Those are the cans most likely to be leaking or corroded because of the acid in the foods reacts with the metal. I try to keep those types of canned foods together on 1 shelf so I can check them frequently.
@orange2sweet673
@orange2sweet673 3 ай бұрын
I would just open one when you are ready. Just do the smell test. if they smell good, you are good to go. Please also inspect the cans for any dents or if they are starting to rust. This can make them questionable but a lot of things are good way pass or Best Buy dates. Sorry to hear about your mother I know it’s not easy I lost my mom a little over seven years ago so I understand.
@jenallen5202
@jenallen5202 3 ай бұрын
The smell test is not a good idea for low acid things like beans. Botulinum is invisible and has no smell or taste. However as long as the cans aren't rusty bulging ect they should be fine.

Now, we ALSO have to be concerned about the "high protein" items, as that extra protein often comes from the BUGS that they've sneakily added. Apparently, if someone has a shellfish allergy, they very well may also have a bug protein allergy, as the wings have the same chemicals as the shells. Sigh.

Hi, AG, good little stockpile! As others have mentioned, water storage is paramount - especially in hot, dry places. The shelf-stable milks and yogurt & fruit packages are GREAT ideas. I've never seen the yogurt/ fruit packages, and sadly, the UHT milk products are very difficult to find here - they used to be EVERYWHERE. As for the high-protein pasta, we have to read the labels VERY carefully. It turns out that the extra protein LIKELY comes from insects, and, anyone who is allergic to shellfish should be very careful - the insect wings are made of the same stuff, so that insect protein can cause allergic reactions in such people. (Personally, I also just don't want to eat bugs - regardless of what Klaus Schwab wants me to do!). Excellent project! Thanks for sharing! ❤

Good information once again. I always tell people not to put anything heavy on a top shelf. Some years back we had an employee who was a packrat and when he left, I discovered what I thought was a pile of newspapers he ditched on top of a bookcase. I should have gotten a stepstool to look at it but just pulled on the stack thinking it was a few newspapers only to have what I couldn't see were shallow boxes loaded with papers and other heavy stuff. I stopped it from hitting me in the face but did hurt my shoulder and neck trying to grab it, not enough time to jump back and let it just fall. So be careful with loading up any area with heavy things. Glad you were able to find another spot in your daughter's house for another source of food and necessities. I agree with some of the others who mentioned adding water to her stash, we just heard that Biden said that our water sources could be targeted so almost telling us that they know possibly the water sources could be attacked.

As we do not "live by bread alone," what a great idea = craft kits for kids (of all ages! 😃) This is wonderful what you have done with the family. ❤

I have been spending this past year building up a supply of “survivor” things. Not only basic foods for humans and pets, and seasonings, and some of our favorite beverages, but baby wipes, TP, soap, shampoo, lotions (I collect the little bottles of these things from our hotel stays….I use parts of them, and bring home the rest. I literally have a box full of shampoo, conditioner, lotions, sometimes mouth wash, etc. I use some of it in the hotels, but always bring the portions that are included in our room…and that we have paid for in our room feel. I also the practice of when we open the last one of anything, that we purchase a new one for the shelf…that we never run out of condiments, toiletries, etc. I figure that I can offer the unopened hotel items as a gift or barter for someone who might run out. There are still many things that we need some of: laundry detergent, more butane tanks for the grill, a small wood burning stove to stay warm in our high altitude mountain home, etc. Our power grid is strong and has only gone down for 10 hours at the longest, one time for 7 hours, and one time for 3-4 hours in the past 12 years. We have solar lights and solar power, and lots of batteries, and lots of canned heat because I cater so have chaffers. I can keep food warm, actually cook with canned heat and even without special equipment, even though I have it.

We got some much needed rain today here in Texas, so I spent the day indoors. It was a good day to blanch some cauliflower for the freezer and blanch some celery to go into my non-electric dehydrator. I often take days like this to go through my fridge to see what I can put up before it goes bad when I haven't gotten it eaten in a timely manner. You know when I picked up the cauliflower, I felt like eating it, but the reality is that I just haven't gotten to it because I bought too much salad. It was an awesome deal on the salad, so I just didn't get the cauliflower and celery eaten. I still have more salad so I still don't feel like eating them. It happens......but don't throw it out!

Get a few motion sensor closet lights and stick them in the pantry. You can find your stuff without hold a flashlight during blackout.

My prepping has gone in two directions: pantry (larger items or bulk food), and an emergency pantry -where everything here is small scale and ready to use, heat and eat. I have used both preps and although they are different they have saved the day! Be prepared! It’s so helpful.

Mice can chew through the shelf stable milk. Rather than storing in a closet or pantry, I store mine in igloo coolers.

@AlaskaGranny Thanks! When I heard "berries", I was afraid it included raspberries (not a fan and I can always tell when they are in something. Fortunately, they have strawberry 🍓 and banana🍌 pouches. I have them on my list for my next order.

I like the way the pantry looks, a very good idea. Plain instant potatoes, canned veggies and canned meats plus real honey is important to me. Shelf milk and instant pudding for a quick treat, the squeeze pouches you showed are a very good idea

If there is an emergency situation where they need to dip into their Prepper pantry, how would McDonalds be open to get that Big Mac? That would mean the grocery stores would be open, too. Just sayin’…

Surprisingly, once my grocery store had a power outage while we were there shopping, but Mac's down the street was still open as usual. Luckily, we bought the discounted rotisserie chickens and headed home. Have cash!!!

That's all great, but I can't keep up with the rotation. We don't eat that much canned and prepackaged foods. Been storing for about 5 years and a lot are 3-4 past its BBD. Also, we can't afford survival foods. Any suggestions?

The canned items are still good to eat. If you want to replace them you could put the older cans in a blessing box for donation. Food banks won't take out of date items but a struggling family surely will.

You don't need to store food for something that will happen far in the future. Instead look at what you eat everyday that has a longer shelf life and will double as mid-term storage. For example, if you like making pancakes consider buying a large bag of pancake mix and storing it in jars. It won't go stale quickly and you keep the extra jars or a larger container in your pantry. You're going to use it anyway but its also there in an emergency. The same applies to anything that's shelf stable. So basically your mid/long term pantry can be everyday food planned overflow

I quit fast food. It’s not nutritious and God knows what kind of meat you’re eating. Chemicals, steroids, hormones from soy. Antibiotic treated culled farm stock. The cost is getting outrageous.
